Old tow truck

Recently I took a trip out to the high desert near Jacumba, CA to get some more rocks for my layout. While I was there, I noticed an interesting old tow truck displayed in front of a junk yard. I don't know anything about the make or model, but it looks like it might have started out as a WWII military vehicle:
