Here is a pic of a O scale tank car by Rich Yoder. I was going for a well used, grimy rain-streaked car. Comments welcome.  Sean

Nice. I especially like the appearance of the oil, it has the right sheen in the middle and grimy/dusty look farther out. The chunky stuff beyond that seems a little oversized to me, but I don't have any prototype photos to compare it to, so I could be wrong.

The rust on top looks ok, but kind of cuts off abruptly -- I would run some streaks down the sides. The rust on the bottom seems out of place to me. I don't think the underside of the tank would have much rust coming through the paint -- the paint is more protected there and not as likely to be worn. Again, I'm just going by memory here.  Anyway, that's my two cents, for what it's worth.

I pretty much agree with Ray. The rust on the top looks painted on or something; it's not as subtle as the rest of the finish. And, yes, the chunks in the oil seem more like gravel than oily clumps. But overall I think he did a good job. -- Russ

I have seen fuel oil tankers with quite lumpy spillage. Loggers like Diamond and Caldor where nobody cleans up.
