I'm scratching my head wondering how in the world he arranged the lighting of the passing train when ordinarily it would be passing by in complete darkness.

Stuart, Me too. Will once explained at a workshop that the whole process is setting up lighting for something that isn't there and then hoping to catch it at the right spot when it is.

Russ, Will said he set up 5 big lights and one speed light for this shot. They were near each other, but about 400 ft from the trestle. He usually does a lot of preplanning before arriving at a site to get an idea of where to set up lights and how far they will be from the subject.

I spent a lot of time trying to determine where he placed the lights and how many he used. I could guess but without a map or aerial image a meaningful conclusion was impossible so I gave up. It's hard enough to light a diorama; William's job is a hundred times more difficult. -- Russ
