Title: 1/35 Scale & Larger; Diorama and Detail Parts & Accessories
Post by: Malachi Constant on July 16, 2011, 04:22:51 AM
(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.bouldervalleymodels.com%2Fimages%2Ffsrr%2Fdiopark-01.jpg&hash=aae6a456e28d6b4c6deadb6efca5fdddbc5ab1de)

In the never-ending quest to get "enough" bits, pieces & clutter for my 1/35 garage, I ordered one of these sets from Lucky Model in Hong Kong:
http://www.luckymodel.com/scale.aspx?item_no=DIO-35006

Site said "in stock" but it took about 4 weeks AFTER the order was placed to get a "shipped" notice ... then the box showed up a week or so later!  ;D  Diopark doesn't seem to have a web site, but their stuff shows up on ebay and thru a few of the military sellers like Lucky Model.

Package seems to include ALL of the items shown in the illustration ... I'm going to post a mess of close-ups here so others doing the same "search" for appropriate bits can decide if there's anything useful here.  ;)

(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.bouldervalleymodels.com%2Fimages%2Ffsrr%2Fdiopark-02.jpg&hash=e6f603ae45924bdd16173e65b4ea5cc31293ce2d)

There's a workbench with working drawers ...

(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.bouldervalleymodels.com%2Fimages%2Ffsrr%2Fdiopark-03.jpg&hash=ffe40346e71697a20d21c110d1f0e220cc3a7c1a)

Decent but run-of-the-mill woodgrain on the workbench parts ...

(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.bouldervalleymodels.com%2Fimages%2Ffsrr%2Fdiopark-04.jpg&hash=da3366cb581d0f1c3f78611ba7112d42e422ee30)

But the drawer inserts are one-piece bits with separate faces ... thinking that replacing the top and drawer fronts with home-brewed parts might result in a nice workbench assembly without a lot of "figuring" on placing drawers, etc.

(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.bouldervalleymodels.com%2Fimages%2Ffsrr%2Fdiopark-05.jpg&hash=5d66a51ca939d0d88bc97cce218f63322bdbcb8a)

The bench grinder is a decent size and the gooseneck lamp has surprisingly delicate detail ... there's even a little bulb molded in the open underside of the lamp shade.

(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.bouldervalleymodels.com%2Fimages%2Ffsrr%2Fdiopark-07.jpg&hash=99beef5c04637e6e87ec3c72f5190fec3baaa008)

The jacks and canisters are kinda run-of-the-mill ... comparable to similar Italeri and Tamiya parts ...

(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.bouldervalleymodels.com%2Fimages%2Ffsrr%2Fdiopark-08.jpg&hash=48fc4fe77695ae8cbbf67a1d071694072c685937)

The C-clamps are pretty large clamps ... but they have some really nice relief.

(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.bouldervalleymodels.com%2Fimages%2Ffsrr%2Fdiopark-09.jpg&hash=1887530b51f0f8eacd4a965c0d2682db9a30f466)

Very nice molding on these little hand wheels ... and, look, a wrist watch!  :o

(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.bouldervalleymodels.com%2Fimages%2Ffsrr%2Fdiopark-10.jpg&hash=31026caf34ef1705e0d2ab7017d3a1af174397f8)

There are a few plumbing pieces (which go with the hand wheels in previous photos) ... and some rubber gloves, those look a bit flat ... but might work out okay as a background item ... or spark an urge to make some with putty ...

(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.bouldervalleymodels.com%2Fimages%2Ffsrr%2Fdiopark-11.jpg&hash=7b08bd18d6381400db1c66ef7d173afe95b07a9d)

A few more "ordinary" looking pieces ... back of the shovel has a decent shape.

(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.bouldervalleymodels.com%2Fimages%2Ffsrr%2Fdiopark-12.jpg&hash=1e7dbf75bd28845eea0a95952b0d1daab5c5a71f)

These crescent wrenches and files have some really nice relief ... surface of the files needs to be roughed up a bit, then they should work quite nicely.

(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.bouldervalleymodels.com%2Fimages%2Ffsrr%2Fdiopark-13.jpg&hash=542d9c9c935baa0b8ddd15f98b8172b82c3f4e7e)

Saws have some nice relief and the wingnut on the hacksaw is a nice touch ... dividers are a bit plain, but that's an unusual piece to find ... paint brush, um.  :(

(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.bouldervalleymodels.com%2Fimages%2Ffsrr%2Fdiopark-14.jpg&hash=474d0186b5bfba1fc55219374317d090483d4a09)

Bunch of wrenches with some nice relief to them.

(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.bouldervalleymodels.com%2Fimages%2Ffsrr%2Fdiopark-15.jpg&hash=c8b509a58f521ea170220af8875fd7cda1aa8fee)

I like the offset on these ... should look good on top of a workbench, etc ... cast a little bit of shadow.

(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.bouldervalleymodels.com%2Fimages%2Ffsrr%2Fdiopark-16.jpg&hash=c7e1bff36b19811ec97e24e35dd23a4543e546d8)

Decent looking pry-bar.

(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.bouldervalleymodels.com%2Fimages%2Ffsrr%2Fdiopark-17.jpg&hash=0d520867af6bcc5bbdc2f9d6a5df2c8bffb44855)

Four-way lug wrench and some nice little screwdrivers -- two philips and two straight -- and the size of these looks good at a glance compared to a figure.

(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.bouldervalleymodels.com%2Fimages%2Ffsrr%2Fdiopark-18.jpg&hash=b670ea3033e527abd86c341919001015b4ce8c73)

Assortment of scissors, sheers and pliers.  Those slip-joint jobs at lower right look pretty crappy, but ...

(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.bouldervalleymodels.com%2Fimages%2Ffsrr%2Fdiopark-19.jpg&hash=cae7a8108605dbd11edfaf6d0bb9eaac83ae70e9)

Some have very nice relief to them ...

SUMMARY:  Finding that it works best to "cherry pick" the best items from various sets ... sometimes photo-etch sets will have some really good looking items, and some that are "too flat" ... some plastic, resin or cast-metal sets have pieces that are really nice and others that are really bulky, lacking detail or whatever.  Seems like there are enough good items here to merit picking up a set and checking out some other Diopark sets ... but, I posted the various close-ups so y'all can decide for yourselves!  ;D

Cheers,
Dallas

Excellent presentation of the kit Dallas! I got mine about a month ago and it arrived in six days after ordering from another source in Hong Kong - think the E-bay seller called himself "Angry old dog". Anyway I agree with your review and for the price of $14.50 you get a LOT of useful stuff. I also got a very nice "Dining Room" kit with tons of details. Will use parts from both in the "Rickarum" diorama.

Thanks Dallas,

very useful to see the bits presented this way, I wish it could be done on more ........ especially etch and diorama products on recent purchases I reckon I'm running about 40% disappointment when I open the package :(

Anders, think it is funnyolddog link http://stores.ebay.co.uk/FunnyDog-Model?_trksid=p4340.l2563

I have found them reliable in the past

Gordon --

Looks like maybe you're both right about that ebay seller ... it's either the same guy with two different ID's ... or two guys next door in Hong Kong!  ;D

here's the one that Anders mentioned:
http://stores.ebay.com/Angryolddog?_trksid=p4340.l2563

Maybe we should do another REFERENCE thread -- similar to the scenery one, but for 1/35 scale detail parts and such ... not just links, but actual photos of stuff that we have in-hand to help each other judge the good from the bad, useful, etc.

Cheers,
Dallas

Here's something for your Vegetable stand, market scene or such

I have not seen these in person...from the images on the website, the crates don't look that great, but might be worth trying to rework, as the produce pieces indide look pretty good (or just shave off the resin box, and put the contents in new scratchbuilt ones.)

They are made by  Czech company http://www.blackdog.cz/t35.html (http://www.blackdog.cz/t35.html)

Looks like they have some useable/adaptable stuff in 1/48 and 1/72 as well.

They are available through ebay from Bernard Cher at MWorkshop:

Oh crap!  The topic got re-titled and stickied ... and now I'm duty-bound to sort thru my stash and provide more crazy little close-up photos.  :-\  :P   :'(

Okay, actually think it's a great idea and I'll start to do that as time allows.  ;)

A great source for parts and bits is "PlusModel";

http://www.plusmodel.cz/news_en.php (http://www.plusmodel.cz/news_en.php)

Some are definitely better than others...but there is a huge selection and I have always found something I could use or adapt. (I will try to pull some out of my storage bins and do independent photos and reviews)

Here's a direct link to their "Dioramas' section:

Thanks for those last two links, great stuff! Especially the Parts Box -- exactly what I've been looking for, someone that sells 1/24th scale engines. Sure beats paying for an entire car model, and these look much better.

Oh Contraire my good buddy? Or as Lee Corso says: "not so fast my friend"!
I saw this thread on July 17th  and was enamored with these detail parts, and was not concerned with the length of time to order the parts. I have ordered parts from Lucky models before, and never had a problem. My new philosophy is: if there's a kit or parts available? Order them, if you use them great if not you can sell um or trade them again someday,........ But it's a lot harder to acquire old out of production kits, so strike when the iron is hot, I say! (hey it's great for the world economy)
With that in mind: I followed the link and placed my order for Factory tools Set 1, and I received an order conformation within 24 hours and a shipping conformation within 48 hours and They were in my mail box today a mere 8 working days after I ordered them, considering its half way around the world? That's pretty fast to me!
I highly recommend that you order early and often, just as long as I get mine first! LOL

MPH -- Thanks!  I've heard good things about Lucky Model ... figure my order just hit them when they were awaiting a restock of those ...

Meanwhile, here's another item with some potential ... I'm biased toward automotive stuff with the slowly-progressing repair shop underway.  New kit from MasterBox has a detailed engine, chassis, option for doors open/closed, windows up/down, sedan/cabriolet, etc:

http://www.mbltd.info/35100.htm

This page has photos of the parts, proto pix of the actual car & engine compartment:
http://inscale.org/pub/index.php?topic=1567.0

I might need one or two to "raid for parts" then maybe another one in some state of repair or disrepair!  ;D

PS -- It IS a German prototype ... but I'm not that fussy ...  more interested in the level of detail than, say, an obvious Chevy/Ford ... at least until the selection improves.  ;)

PPS -- I really DON'T expect this to turn into a VEHICLE thread ... but something like this with all the various chassis components can become a source of detail bits ... separate doors, hoods, chassis, motor = junkyard, repairs, etc.

Cheers,
Dallas

  Dallas ,

For me modelling Post-War German industrial narrow gauge this is just the sort of thing I would be looking for . In addition to the ever increasing number of lorry kits that are becoming available ,there are a number of similar car kits out there that would be quite suitable for me . I already have a Bronco Light saloon ( I forget which vehicle it is based on ) , the ubiquitous Tamiya Opel Blitz and a Azimut Productions resin Ford 917G truck so I'm well set up . Just need to find time to build them .

Thanks for posting this information ,

Nick -- Glad that might be useful to you ... along those lines:

Mini-Art has announced two versions of the two-door version of the Mercedes 170:

http://miniart-models.com/index.htm?/Catalogue.htm

(look under 1/35 WWII Miniatures)

And ICM has a couple of plastic kits that might suit ... the German-built version of a Ford truck and a lovely Opel cabriolet:

http://www.icm.com.ua/catalogue/technics/tscale135/

Those Mini-Art items aren't out yet, but you can surf around and find reviews, parts photos, etc for the ICM kits.  For example, the V3000S truck:

http://www.armorama.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=Reviews&file=index&req=showcontent&id=5823

That's another one that looks like a good "parts source" in addition to being a useful truck ... base for a tow truck, etc.  ;)

Quotebelieve the S65 is just about a straight copy of the Cat 60

The older versions of the S60 certainly were -- see the Plus Models resin kits -- but this machine looks to me more to be "inspired by" mid-30s Cats. It's somewhat different when you start comparing details and, I think, larger than a Cat 60. Probably best thought of as raw material for freelancing rather than as the base for a truly accurate model of a western tractor.

Picked this up today. Umbrella would work as a larger sun shade umbrella  for on a dozer or critter in 1/48.

Hi, gang -

I'm looking for a supplier of pipe fittings for 1' scale; elbows, unions, valves, faucets, etc.
Parts to use with various diameter pipes will be needed, for indoor plumbing use,
in-the-wall pipes, not chrome bathroom/kitchen stuff.
Brass would be perfect, white metal is good, but plastic OK too.
Do any "doll house" outfits sell this stuff? Online?

Also, if I were to cast some of my own in white resin, what would be a good
paint/finish technique to make it look like brass or bronze?

Thanks for your help,
Carlo

I don't know of any pre-made fittings off-hand. Try searching on the web. Some of the larger O-scale PSC locomotive pipe fittings might be useable/adaptable for limited use. You could easlu make many of your own using styrene. Plastruct makes a number of elbow and pipe type pieces, that could possibly be used...or serve as a base for bashing/scratching some. (You will need to look at the full Plastruct catalog, and likely special order them, because the store displays rarely if ever carry/show these parts)

Insofar as coloring, have a look at how Michael Fichtenmayer painted the copper on his Fish Submersible build here in the forum...sim techniques could be used for brass. Paints such as Alclad and Gunze and Rub-n-Buff would IMO all be good osolutions or starting points for brass coloring.

I have mentioned this British company in passing on a few occasions but decided that it was time to give them the dignity of a more formal announcement . Diorama Debris http://www.dioramadebris.co.uk/index.asp basically make silicon moulds to make bricks , tiles and paving from . At the moment the two scales that they have moulds for are 1:16th and 1:35th , with the latter having by far the greater choice . This will soon be augmented by some new moulds to make bricks in either 1/48th or 1/43.5th scales . It is essentially the same mould but will make 1/48th scale standard German bricks or 1/43.5th scale standard British bricks . It have been suggested to them that  moulds to make 24" x 12" slates in each of those scales might be worth considering as well . Incidentally , with the new brick mould you can make bricks with or without frogs . Frogs in 1/48th scale bricks ? That's insane . Look at the photos if you don't believe me . Whether anyone is mad , sorry , I mean courageous , enough to construct a whole building out of them time will tell , but they would make great junk/rubble piles .

In 1/35th scale there are a number of products in the pipeline that hopefully will come to fruition .As well as the Spanish barrel roof tiles that they already have on their website they will be producings a mould to make pantiles ( similar to the one's on Per Olav Lund's The Backyard diorama ) , beavertail and half round plain tiles . Apart from the Spanish tiles these are more of a European product but as their main market is the military modelling one this is to be expected .

There is also talk of producing moulds to make cinder/breeze/concrete , call them what you will , blocks in 1/35th scale and I'm sure if there is the demand possibly in 1/16th scale as well .

However , for me the most exiting new mould is one to make rows of Flemmish bond brickwork . This , quite literally , speeds up construction by tenfold . This I have proved with my present project . It took me 7 sessions to lay 900 individual bricks in my old way using HO stripwood as mortar joint spacers . With the new moulds I was able to lay over 1700 bricks in my first session . I have so far laid over 5000 bricks in the same time as the original 900 . The joke is , they look like strips of Lego bricks because they are moulded with spacer blocks to speed up construction .

Even if you never buy from this company you still will find lots of useful tips and help on casting on their website .

By the way , this bit of brickwork , in 1/35th scale , was done by one of the owners of the company who is not a modeller . And she's a girl as well . So there is no excuse for us tough chaps not to have a go !

Thanks Nick,

I just stopped by and dropped a good number of pounds/dollars/scheckles......look forward to giving them a go. I told them you had recommended them (and that whatever happens you would be at fault  ;) ;D)

I was feeling bold, so under ther suggestion section, I suggested graduated size slate tiles. Most slate roofs I have worked on all have larger tiles at the bottom, moving/graduating to smaller ones toward the top.  (old them if I was off base, to take it up with you as you pointed me to the site  ;) ;D )

  Ray ,

Not at the moment . However , I had been thinking that I might suggest doing some moulds in that scale . It is already possible to buy bricks in that scale but I'm not sure about slates and tiles . I will mention it to them .

Do you have any specific requests ?

... The joke is , they look like strips of Lego bricks because they are moulded with spacer blocks to speed up construction .
... these Flemish brick strips are really great ... wonder, if they'd convert it to 1/16 scale too ... even single bricks with that "LEGO appearence" would be great and useful, especially in larger scales ... mumbles: "... got to make a mould request ..."

 Marc ,

I have already suggested this to them . I have suggested that if they made 24" x12" slates moulds in both 1/48th and 1/43.5 scales then they will be useable for people who model in 1/35th scale , or larger .
   In the heyday of slate production there were about 20 different sizes of slate available as standard , each with its own name . A 24" x 12" slate was known as a " Duchess" . A 24" x 12" in 1/43rd becomes a 20" x 10" in 1/35th , or a " Countess" , and a 24" x 12" in 1/48th becomes an 18" x 9" in 1/35th , or a " Viscountess" .

When you get down to " scullerymaid" they are really very small indeed !

Making a roof with  graduated slates should be a very interesting exercise and if they do make moulds for those different sized slates then that is what I shall do .

Typical Southerner !

Slate names & Sizes, for those interested ..............

Marc/Nick been trying to find out if there was any rule of thumb when doing graduated slate sizes on a roof, appreciate it would need to be a flexible rule due to size/pitch of roof,  etc,  ................. any thoughts?

EDIT

I did find this description but it was off a New England web site so not certain it applies back here

"Graduated Length and Thickness
Graduated slate roofs are very traditional and attractive. In a Graduated Length slate roof, the length of the slates decreases from the drip edge to the ridge. A full graduation would start with a 24" tall slate at the drip edge that exposes 10.5" and include 22", 20", 18", 16" and 14" slates, finishing with a 12" tall slate at the ridge, exposing 4.5". Typically Graduated roofs are random width, but single width can be done. Additionally the thickness of the slate can be graduated, with thicker slates at the bottom moving to thinner slates near the ridge. The Graduated Thickness slate roof can be done with Single Width or Random Width roofs, or for maximum affect it can be combined with Graduated Length slates for a truly impressive roof. For both the Graduated Length and Graduated Thickness roof options, there are no hard rules on what sizes or thicknesses should be used. Depending on the project, only 3 or 4 lengths can be included in the graduation with as many different thicknesses, or all 7 standard lengths can be employed with only one or two thicknesses "

Had forgotten about the other additional variable of thickness ::)

Nick --

Thanks for the original info & the update.  I've made over 2000 of the 1/35 bricks with their mold (and/or mould) now -- those don't have frogs like the 1/16 and 1/48 versions ... but I suppose I'll live!

Looking forward to ordering a bunch of other molds from them ... one item that I'd suggest would be a mold for HALF bricks ... which would be useful for doing various bonds from individual bricks when you're just doing a facade / single layer of brick.

Cheers,
Dallas

Half bricks ?  Can't you cut a whole brick into two ? That is all I've done . You then have the cut edge facing in .

Well, yes ... but look at it this way:

Strips of pre-laid Flemish bond?  Couldn't you lay them individually?  (sure you can, but ... it's HANDY and/or NICE this way!)

So ... yes, I can certainly cut bricks to all sorts of shapes and sizes ... but it's a bit tedious ... so it's just one of those things that would be nice ... and half bricks would be useful to anyone doing the fascia/facade of bricks only.

Well , Dallas , you could ask them yourself if they would make a mould for half bricks . But it would only be worth their while if there was some prospect of selling more than just a few of those moulds , and I'm not sure that they would . But don't rely on what I say because they may be willing to do one just for you . Seeing as it is you !

I still don't think it is much of a hassle snipping a load of bricks in half with some cutters . I also found on my previous shed diorama that due to the way that the bonding came out I needed some larger than half bricks to keep the joints looking right and I could do that just by cutting the bricks differently ,

They also make a mould for 9" square floor tiles . The original idea was to make them looking like old terracotta tiles but they could also be used to make black and white ones which might suit your little project .

Gordon: yep, that is pretty much the basic info on the slate sizes and application.

Nick: Got this response from Louise at DD today....as you can see she wants you to provide her with some info and photos  ;D ;D

Don't recall ever seeing slate tiles used in that way but like most things you do not see things unless you are aware of it.
We would be interested in seeing photos if you have any.
I know there are three common sizes for slate tiles, so perhaps they are using all three sizes on the same roof as you describe.
Actually Nick Ogden has already suggested making the other size slates.
It would make sense to make the different size slates.

Thank you for the suggestion.

Eduard #36185 Kitchen Accessories -- these are pre-painted/finished photo-etched stainless steel -- nice!

Eduard web site:  www.eduard.cz

Available from Lucky Model in Japan with free shipping:
http://www.luckymodel.com/scale.aspx?item_no=36185

As with all photo-etch, some parts are just too "flat" (like the frying pans in this set) ... put there are things like the knives where they provide additional pieces to give depth.  Printing on the plates and such is rather impressive.  Silverware in TWO styles ... one set with wood handles ... other set has different shapes!

And, of course, every kitchen needs a cuckoo clock!  ;D

Today I recieved the 1/35th pantile pre-production mould from Louise at  Diorama Debris to try out . I have done one cast and the tiles look great . Louise , herself , is not convinced that they have got the profile of the tiles looking right , I reminded her that most people don't know the difference between a pantile and a pancake and that they were perfectly acceptable . So I have posted some photos here to see if there is anyone brave enough to disagree with me by saying that the tiles are not up to scratch .

Due to the nature of the way that the tiles are laid it is necessary to have the top right and bottom left corners of the tiles cut off at an angle so that they sit properly ontop of each other . The tiles themselves come out of the mould uncut and there is a tiny score mark top and bottom where one needs to snap off the corners with tweezers . In addition each tile has a single nib and just below a minute flat area so that the tiles sits nicely on the batten . This attention to a detail that will rarely be seen is unusual and is what makes these product so good . And they are easier to get out of the moulds than the Spanish barrel tiles .

I don't see the copper nails holding them down ;D.

Are you going to take a couple of tiny pieces of copper strip to represent where one or two of the slates had been replaced in the past on the first part of the roof?

What is the actual size of the Spanish Tiles?  There is a block of 1920's store fronts in a not to nice neighborhood on the north side of Richmond, Va with a short bit of Spanish Tile roof-work which are just crying to be modeled as a row of flats behind a street car in the 1930's, and if close enough, I might have to add the mould to my kit.

Besides the numorous military items they recently released an new set which might be interesting, being airco units as found on roof tops and building walls.

Thanks for the update!  Hmm ... don't suppose that it's escaped your attention that some of those crushed water bottles could go in the corner of an alley or driveway ...  ;D  -- Dallas

I have some of these moulds ( of course ) and I have started making some casts from them . I haven't built anything with them yet , perish the thought , but I hope to start playing with them when I go on my hols to sunny Scotland in a few weeks time . It's sunny up there at the moment , but when we get there it's bound not to be , so I'll need to have something to do as the rain is lashing down outside .

Anyone fancy having a mould to reproduce one of these little edifices ?

Things have been happening , but not all of them particularly photogenic . For instance , there's not much of interest to see in an underpinned stone wall , other than some new concrete . I'll post a few photos in a day or so when I've downloaded them orf the camera ,

Interesting. Here's a photo I took in 2003 in Kuwait. This was an overflow from the Ammunition Supply Point .. here this was returns being re-banded on pallets
