Hi All,
After lurking for some time I thought that I would introduce myself by showing you a project that I have been working on for a couple of years off and on. I hope that by posting it will get me to finish it off. The first two photos are of a 7/8ths scale Porter. To keep Marc from completely writing me off the last photo is a On2 Dickson.
Cheers,
Marty J
Welcome, Marty! Those are nice looking locos so far.
What is it with these Porters!!!!!! Aaaargh!!!!... ;) ;D ;D ;D
Just kidding you... ;D
Welcome to the forum.
Those look like some beautiful builds so far (wish the photos were a bit bigger [ heck..I needed to gripe about something ;)].....the Dickinson is very cool, and very unique. I really look forward to seeing more of your work.
Marc
PS. I actually have nothing against someone building a Porter per-se (especially not if you do it from scratch!).....I primarily object to mfrs. churning out more of them...sort of the same way I think it's idiotic that after B-Mann released their T-boiler Shay...PSC makes a kit of almost the same one also! [Aaaargh...Bang-Head]....it's like they're retarded lemmings!!! :)
Actually, PSC put out that Shay long before Bachmann and PSC did a much nicer job. But your point is valid. -- Russ
Not to beat the issue, but just to get my facts straight....I know they did the complete brass Shay before....but I thought the plastic kit version came after. ??? :-\
MR
How good is the PSC brass T-boiler shay ?
Jacq
Another Marty!
And he models in brass!
And he is building a Porter!
HA ha ha ha ha Take that Marc! ;D
Good looking models Marty (I feel like I am talking to myself) ???
How about some more pictures & info?
Welcome.
-Marty
Let's have a Marty Party to welcome our new guest .
Sorry Jonesy , you can't come as we like the new Marty much more than you .
Nick
Wow, another brass building Marty, what are the chances? Welcome! Hope to see some more progress.
Jacq, the PSC T-boiler shay started with the Mich-Cal #2. At the time, it was the most detailed Shay out there (still is one of the best). Then they came up with a "catalog" generic version using many of the same parts. The detailing is excellent. I cannot recall if there were build or performance issues. I bought a used one that had a split Grandt gear (it happens to the best) , and I have never replaced it. I also bought a plastic kit version, but I haven't gotten beyond pawing through the plastic bags. I might build a junkyard version, or maybe a diesel conversion.
I also wish Bachmann had come out with a more typical boiler type Shay. But, I reckon their T-boiler did well enough (at least until their gears split).
Sorry, Marty don't mean to change the subject!
Chuck,
thanks for the info on the brass shay.
A friend has the plastic PSC one. The chassis/floor is not rigid enough and I think this will eventually affect the performance.
Jacq
Hey Marty --
I think the Porter is really cute! And the Dickson is great too ... one of these days, I wanna get around to building some of the crazy looking Glover locos ... that way I can model "cartoon" locos after real prototypes. ;D
I'll cast another vote and make another plea for larger photos ... certainly look like they're worth a closer inspection. You can post up to 200k in a single message, so do them one at a time in larger size if needed ... or use a program like irfanview, etc to compact the photos a bit ...
However you do it .... post more, bigger pix ... and welcome aboard!
Cheers,
Dallas
Bigger pictures! Those are neat models. It would be nice to see the construction methods. The Dickson would make a nice 7/8ths Ruby live steam conversion.
Someone should tie a tiny Porter model under Marc's bicycle seat. It would be like Krytponite for Superman- Marc wouldn't hardly be able to ride to the end of his driveway.
John
Hi All,
Thanks for the welcome. Larger photos to follow.
I also don't understand why we have three shays that look about the same when there are dozens that remain unmodeled...or why manufactures use solid blocks to represent cast frames... but that's why we build instead of buy.....
A Glover would be tempting...
As far as what I build I mostly model in 7/8ths of an inch to the foot – provides 2' gauge on LGB track. I worked in On2 for a long time but find the larger scale is easier to work in. I like to build as much from scratch as possible but I am not very fast due to job and kids. I like working with metal far more than painting. Part of my attraction to this website is the amazing paint jobs that are routinely posted - something that I would like to get better at.
Currently I am working on an "in the wall layout" that is a view out onto a small warf. On the left side you are looking at a warehouse that is built over the water and on the left side you are looking through a small machineshop at a recently arrived ship. The machine shop will be brick – its slow going - and the warehouse will be wood and steel siding. The train makes a loop into the laundry room for my kids entertainment.
Cheers,
the other Marty

Thanks for the larger pics. Very nice.
That Dickinson would look right at home running somewhere in the Great Dismal Swamp.
Marc
WOW!...that wall layout is really cool. Love the ship/barge hull, and wthe plating detail between the trackwork. What the heck are those robot things! They're great...look very Steam-Punk/Sky Saptain and the World of Tomorrow-ish!
Can you tell us more about this layout?
Marc
Marty --
Really cool stuff there, thanks for the extra pix! I seem to recall seeing your layout on Carl Arendt's site at some point ... if that's correct, do you know the month/date or page?
Thanks!
Dallas
Hey Marty thanks for the pics. The Dickson has nice lines. The Porter looks good in brass too.
The mini-layout in the wall is exceptional. What an interesting attention grabber, especially in a small room or if one needs a place to show models without needing a running layout.
John
Marty, I like the job you did on the porter ;) Craig

And it looks like a great place to send my chronosynclastic infundibulum for repair! ;)

Very cool stuff, and I love the bookcase display/layout!
This is very novel, I have never seen anything quite like it! When I get tired of copper mining, there's always a possible steampunk theme out there to explore!
