Title: 1/24 Road Roller
Post by: Gordon Ferguson on January 20, 2010, 02:39:57 AM
Having now started with the crane thought I would add what I have been filling in my time with while deciding on colour, etc.
I have a thought that I would like to display the crane in some type of builders yard and that thought led me on to looking at photo's of road rollers  ......  I had decided that I would try and model one of the small versions and while I could neither find plans or even basic dimensions I did find this for inspiration

(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi232.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fee275%2Fgfadvance%2FSteam%2520Road%2520Roller%2F2364963090_3c0f73c2f0.jpg&hash=fe602164a2a64aa2ebfe9b93ccc180496e9a648c)

As with most of my models over the last few years it is not an exact scale replica, I used to model that way but ended loosing all the enjoyment of what is supposed to be a hobby and "fun" by the people that would point out that I had missed a rivet off on the third row down, etc.

I decided that the rollers may give more problems than the body so thats where I started, made out of rolled paper and plastic sheet plus rod and strip for additional details.

(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi232.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fee275%2Fgfadvance%2FSteam%2520Road%2520Roller%2Froadroller004.jpg&hash=d30633b01f676efed72858245c9070f501971866) (https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi232.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fee275%2Fgfadvance%2FSteam%2520Road%2520Roller%2Froadroller001.jpg&hash=73a93b268f360ffee849f1ca26a4499e1fc39399)

As it turned out the body was actually far more difficult .. probably due to the fact that I had no drawings or dimensions so I ended up having to rebuild it a number of times, as while not a scale model it is important to me that it at least looks as if it may work ( its the engineer in me !)

(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi232.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fee275%2Fgfadvance%2FSteam%2520Road%2520Roller%2Froadroller012.jpg&hash=304988124285d07faa74428ceb42d8589fc57f51) (https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi232.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fee275%2Fgfadvance%2FSteam%2520Road%2520Roller%2Froadroller014.jpg&hash=48bc38b28d956806b4256edf32b18d742398030b)

That last photo shows the balsa core which was then skinned with plastic card.

As is my usual practice , when I had the basic shapes sorted I then started to add some additional detail using rod, tubing etc.

(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi232.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fee275%2Fgfadvance%2FSteam%2520Road%2520Roller%2Froadroller034.jpg&hash=65f9dfe85462b5a78884a52d987083da654a0cee) (https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi232.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fee275%2Fgfadvance%2FSteam%2520Road%2520Roller%2Froadroller036.jpg&hash=3c6b4687e4338e1738b16b51de5ac96de79259df)

Gradually I added more details

(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi232.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fee275%2Fgfadvance%2FSteam%2520Road%2520Roller%2Froadroller078-1.jpg&hash=d1540a74e11b8602f13c61e0b28a81b8b7cd86ba) (https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi232.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fee275%2Fgfadvance%2FSteam%2520Road%2520Roller%2Froadroller081-1.jpg&hash=307635d3a86ccdf6b14382d1e91dd5b7b63aaf28) (https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi232.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fee275%2Fgfadvance%2FSteam%2520Road%2520Roller%2Froadroller082-1.jpg&hash=570717251d11c8ffccae2d91eb20b7863e1e7c8c)

Since taking these photo's I have actually spent some time sorting where I am going to photograph my models , so sure you will delighted that the background clutter may be a thing off the past.

(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi232.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fee275%2Fgfadvance%2FSteam%2520Road%2520Roller%2Froadroller099.jpg&hash=ef7559a35d3aff12ef21c424a3afca34532bbcbf) (https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi232.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fee275%2Fgfadvance%2FSteam%2520Road%2520Roller%2Froadroller098.jpg&hash=5c6eec7f63da8a71616a4f6c33cc432d0343b81b)

Last couple of shots show where I am now, the plan was to spray the model with a dark grey/black undercoat  1 to check for flaws and 2 to provide a base for using the hairspray technique to show subsequent wear. Now I am not so certain that I will go down this route , I am inclined to over weather my models  and think it may be better to lightly paint in the chips and wear.

More will follow.

What a gorgeous piece of scratchbuilding!!
This kind of stuff is right up my alley.
Thanks for showing this - can't wait to see more.

Very nice work Gordon. I can't tell if it is missing any rivets.

HE FINALLY POSTS!!! ;) ;D.

Wow!...and what a doozey it is!.. This is a great build...very cool project. I like your interpretation better than the original.

I love this,... first the crane ...now the roller...you're building all the projects on my "to do" list....now I don't need to build them,...I can just live vicariously through yours. ;D

I think you should go ahead with the hair-spray approach.....have a look at Micheel Fitchenmeyers current Sci-Fi build.

Glad you all liked this little beast.

Ray, for a man who produces that wonderful brass work , the fact that you like my "details" is a compliment. Let me know if there is a specific bit you want more shots on  ..... sure I have lots more out of focus, badly lit shots to share.

Ken Thanks.

Marc well pleased that I am reducing your work load, while you are in thinking mood ponder this little issue

The "tyre/tread" on the wheels  in the real ones is a roughly polished steel finish ... I think I will use one of the buff-able paints, with maybe some of the "heated alloy effect" paints used by the jet guys  & fichtenfoo just to add some slight character ( & pigment powders?) and hopefully keep the the toy effect away ....... any thoughts?

Coloring is a tough call on those....

Like tracks, they quickly became shiny when rolling across the ground, and thus exposing the bare metal.....however, they could also very quickly develop surface rust over a few days of inactivity, as these freshly exposed steel begins to oxidize.

.....so it depends on what condition situation you want to model.

If going to the fresher worn steel, I would still be sure not to go too silver and shiny.....rather than using a silver or steel paint, I personally would probably opt for (or at least do a test of) something like the MIG steel pigment over a balck/brown base color...sort of the approach that Michael did...or what Mig did on the tines and front bottom/side edges of the scoop

(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2F3.bp.blogspot.com%2F_Xz4UFpN7naE%2FSxQKBnnuFNI%2FAAAAAAAAAGg%2FlmzFTp7nmZc%2Fs1600%2Fload%2Byellow%2B%2814%29.jpg&hash=b6905e66d04dc2be5c7f3e8cfbcfe018aa109ce7)
Note that theoght still shiny, it has that darker underlying darkness and depth of steel.

You might well be able to achieve this using the darker or burnt steel color from alclad, and buffing it out to the desired sheen, but I think that this will be too monochromatic/even in shading/sheen........plus Alclad is a real b*tch to work with over imperfect surfaces (not saying you have one...just a heads-up).

Regardless I would do a few test pieces on some scrap tube.

I personally don't think I would go the route of the discolored/heated metal .....just doesn't seem right...I see no reason for the metal to get hot enough to get that type of discoloration (and from the few rollers I have seen in my life, I can't really recall it occuring).

HTH,

Marc

OK...so my first thought is probably a bit off......it appears roller discoloration also depends on what the heck you are rolling:

You don't hang around do you !

I would say thanks for taking the time to find all this reference material, however all you have really done is find about 3 or 4 more rollers I would like to have a go at  ;D ;D

Agree, material being rolled is key to overall colour .... was not thinking of trying to show heated steel only to get some tonal variation. Your material has helped clarify my thinking, which is

If abandoned or laid up for a while main colouring will be variations on rust/oxidised metal

or

if in use linking the colour to the rolled surface .. possibly using pigments, over a "slightly" oxidised surface.

In both cases seems pretty clear that colour will have to be applied in such way to show the movement /streaking at 90 degrees to axis of rotation .... and the best advice is to get some practice pieces done.

Thanks for this

Gordon,
Outstanding model and leads to another question.
what/how did you model the lettering on the radiator shell?
Thanks for posting these great models.

Rick,

the letters were individually applied... and it shows unfortunately - 2mm plastic alphabet from http://www.slatersplastikard.com/plastikard/alphabets.html

Spaced out, fixed with MEK Pac and then burnished with glass fibre pencil when dry to attempt to make them look cast.

OK a critique from others would be of help to me.

Objective ;- to show surface finish on roller that is in use crushing a grey/industrial dirt base

Method :- surface initially sprayed flat black, then light grey sponged on and dragged around surface.

medium rust colour then lightly sponged on, then when paint still damp MIG Industrial Dirt sponge on

finally a few clumps of the pigment arranged on hard surface and roller rolled over them

Appreciate pictures are still not of highest quality (and I need to check under natural light in the morning)but I think its a reasonable start in representing the surface finish I am trying to achieve. But I have have been playing with this for last couple of hours and could be starting to believe my own propaganda .......... feel free to correct my delusions. Thanks

Looking back at the proto pics I have the following comments;
The splotches are not working for me, I did see "some" in the protos, not as many as you have
I think you need more "streaks" or the continuous lines from rolling / scraping.
I think it should be a little more (not much) umber, but the overall color is good (may be a tick lighter?)

Marty,

A nights sleep and fresh eyes and I think your right.

Before I start again, I've tweaked current go ..... used a stiff brush and lightly brushed out pigments to try and lighten and "streak" finish slightly  and taken new photos in daylight!

                      before                                                                now

(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi232.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fee275%2Fgfadvance%2FSteam%2520Road%2520Roller%2FRollersurfacetests004.jpg&hash=988b4d000345d53651dfd94f8977e3da99f6ee16) (https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi232.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fee275%2Fgfadvance%2FSteam%2520Road%2520Roller%2FRollersurfacetests008.jpg&hash=8e157d8e768f83fd42eb9f9fb1e378d6c8ef4fb2)

                      before                                                               now

(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi232.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fee275%2Fgfadvance%2FSteam%2520Road%2520Roller%2FRollersurfacetests005.jpg&hash=4609358681f9d92ab3bfcf15a524b2f2ac12c04b) (https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi232.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fee275%2Fgfadvance%2FSteam%2520Road%2520Roller%2FRollersurfacetests009-1.jpg&hash=492c4efea3d6b67dcf26c45b45e49ae2067c1598)

I think its a bit better , lighter and real life it does look slightly streaky and its got that powdery look that I seem to remember on the surface of rollers .... I'm going to leave it now , concentrate on the crane and come back and then see what I think

MUCH BETTER!
I'm thinking a very diluted wash with oil - black, very thinned would be perfect.
please try it out before you ruin the roller due to me though ;)

The second photo's do look much better .........they show a well used roller surface and not one ready for the scrap heap.

Gordon,

Sorry to be late to respond. (Limited to Blackberry access yesterday...and I hate text typing ::)).  I think both results were great. The second go  around deifinitely looks like one that has just been used to roll a nice crushed rock sub-grade.

Not to be/sound critical....but I do have to say I am a bit curious about your painting/process order for the wheels.....are you planning on leaving them black? The reason I ask, is because the finish you just did seems the most delicate part of the roller (something best done last), so masking to paint the rest of the wheel, and add any subsequent weathering to the sides, seems a somewhat delicate, and uneccessarily fidgety operation (especially where the roller edge color cuts/transitions into the roller surface).

No need to panic Marc ..... that was the first roller I made, which due to my inability to measure twice and cut once ended up the wrong size !

So now I will find out if I can replicate the process ... 3 times!

Gordon, the road roller is really shaping up very nicely. For those of us with less experience with these kinds of projects I would love to hear more how you do the individual pieces and then bring them together. Any jigs drawings used would be very helpful in seeing. The wheel stiffeners/rims have what look like many little fins and wonder how you make each one exactly the same. Thanks much Pat

"each one exactly the same" ........... oh how I wish they were!

Pat, for these freelance models I would very embarrassed to show my initial drawing/sketches, all they are are one or two critical height/ lengths basically so I can then fit the rest of the model in.
The detailing on the ribs is just microstrip i.e. for a T shaped rib all I do is first position the vertical web in the right place and then add strip either side to make the top of the T ...... if that makes sense. The small angle ribs are again microstrip cut to a length that looks right with the angles etc, and then just duplicated ... afraid by eye, these for example are only roughly 2mm by 3mm. If they were larger I would make one master and then use it as cutting guide for the rest.
I have found when doing these type of models that it pays to always go smaller/ thinner than instinct tells you too i.e. if I first reach for 30 thou plasticard I switch to 20 thou .. especially true when applying rivets or nuts and bolts. The only jigs I used on the roller were different size glass jars to wrap paper round to form the wheels rims and and a couple of end stops to cut strip, etc to the same length.

Sorry not very exciting or even illuminating.

Gordon

OK Mark, see your twisted sense of humour is getting the better of you!

Actually on your first post think you've shown that one before because that was the image that triggered off the whole saga, here is a painted version;-

(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi232.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fee275%2Fgfadvance%2FAveling_Pioneer_1.jpg&hash=4130ccfe282c310477d3aafc1847f8a5d59dfc49)

As for the others posted , thanks ... got most of them in the file for future builds, oh yea right!

Here are a couple that Chuck should build as believe they are both based on Fordson's

(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi232.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fee275%2Fgfadvance%2FFordsonFroadroller.jpg&hash=7eb12d90f1db9bed6aca47ff1d3fa4179f6764bf)(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi232.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fee275%2Fgfadvance%2F800px-Road_roller.jpg&hash=3fbc30452809ff6498d32912ca79618bd934901e)

Have to admit "steam" is not really my thing, too many complicated bits but do fancy this one
(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi232.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fee275%2Fgfadvance%2F800px-Wallis__Steevens_no__7940_-1.jpg&hash=b8d1e8fb5f66bd91ed4210fe5372dbd1768fba95)
but REALLY want to have ago at this  (https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi232.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fee275%2Fgfadvance%2F2008_0228VF20Crawler20470509820E.jpg&hash=b2d25934a13791d4c5680587bccf2ae9748357a0)

Now "point of order" can someone point me to a thread that will tell me how you all post small images that can then be opened and enlarged ... feel I am being rude taking up so much space!

Gordon

Still sorting out paint finishes, but came across this

(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi232.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fee275%2Fgfadvance%2F800px-Chinese_road_roller_Albania.jpg&hash=6bf6c4d95c8c0099556b1aaed5c6a0adc7cd8017)

Very useful if anybody needs a quick model roller, with little detail and no need  for cab controls, etc. Plus really well built brick wall !

Chinese built abandoned in Albania.

Marc... do you collect pictures of everything?? Concerning the third shot in your post, the B&W with the explosive charges going off in the background... if that fellow's trying to escape, you'd think it would be faster to run. He could be providing a service locating land mines though...  :P

Lot of good shots there Gordon. That steam version is real gem...

Been a while but back on this beast.

Needed something to practice my painting and as "current " projects are boxed away went to the abandoned shelf and pulled this down

Straight forward airbrush finish, then some filters added on separate panels with MIG oils,  some ........... probably too much chipping as usual, and weathering done with Gouache water colour - working on one side at a time.

(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi232.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fee275%2Fgfadvance%2FSteam%2520Road%2520Roller%2FRoadroller031.jpg&hash=23c12a8917b999785f4fd6debd4f39453dd2b1db)

Trying to teach myself to work on small areas at a time , as the experts seem to do .............. so rear mudguard. Added some rust staining using MIG oils, brushed some graphite dust over some of the chipped areas  and then lightly burnished the paint work as I wanted a paint over metal look

(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi232.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fee275%2Fgfadvance%2FSteam%2520Road%2520Roller%2FRoadroller033.jpg&hash=a678cc579aa2607038226e50adb5d4d931780d88)

As you just see I have started some experiments on the wheels based on a matt black undercoat and then burnished with MIG Gun Metal pigment .... more work needed!!

Thanks Les, the Barford rollers have popped up in this thread a few times, Marc posted a couple early on. I took these pics of one up in the Lake District last year . Les how about posting details of the measurements, I took some as well so maybe between us we will have covered it ?

  (https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi232.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fee275%2Fgfadvance%2FThekeildQuarryMuseum293.jpg&hash=178aef4eb65a70faf4f4f44629bc055b6225ef89)

Just love the engine slung at the back

As I have a bit of a thing with rollers one of these days , when my painting skills are up to it want to do this one ........... its not a Barford.

(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi232.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fee275%2Fgfadvance%2F308.jpg&hash=9e9c5393157262355972d39a98140f90da756404)

But till then currently, off & on , building a 1/24 master which will be resin cast of this more modern type

No I don`t mind, I intend to do the same. My proper job is a bit demanding at the moment so time to do the things I really enjoy drawing is put to the side. This was started last year when I had little work and what I had was falling down but now have to be rebuilt. I do have a file of over 60 photos that I don`t mind sharing.

Les

think I may have died and gone to heaven!

Another vehicle I have wanted to model ............ I have several books with pictures of this and my local transport Museum (Manchester) has one ....... probably next week I will pop in and try and get the wheelbase for you.

Will pm you re photos ............... I have rather a lot as well so a swap may be possible ..................... and I may as well ask, what other drawings have you hidden away down there?

Andi

Careful Andi, you know how I am about challenges and if you keep this up I will send you another Bedford CA van that you love working on so much !

Marc

don't get to excited it will only be a very basic resin kit, in 1/24 .... rollers, basic body, front roller cradle etc .............. probably with some additional/optional details to allow some changes to be rung. The idea is to provide a suitable load for some of the 1/24 truck modellers rather than a highly detailed model in its own right.v Now while I have your attention on rollers let me ask about ..................... ? ;)
