Title: new home! ctsy "Shorpy" {18 Tropicana Ct }
Post by: lab-dad on July 17, 2009, 12:54:47 PM
This is a housewarming present for my good friend Jerry, "trains 1941"

This picture came from Shorpy (old photos website) and I really liked the whole scene.
Doesnt the owner look pleased as punch?
I figured it would give me a chance to try out some new techniques too.
(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi263.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fii121%2Flab-dad-jones%2Fnewhome.jpg&hash=942c20bee77690e8af1a5df88b304d42fa6f3a1a)
I actually shrunk the building by two boards, making it 20' long
I also played with resizing to get the photo as close to 1/4" = one foot.

Gordon posted a while back about using pastel crayons and after picking some up I really liked the look.
I stained and grained the usual way with silverwood.
Then I just dragged the crayon over the wood.
I had to seal the pastel with matte acrylic otherwise it just wipes away.
There are actually three coats of "paint" on the building.
I did each piece separately and then attached them to the plywood walls.
The window is from Crystal River Products.
I had Tom make me some that were 73% of the usual size he cuts.
If your interested in them they are .660 x 1.09" a perfect match to my scale photo!!!!!! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Anyway here is where I am at so far.

Still a long way to go but more soon.
BTW the Corliss is just on hold while I play with this small stuff for a bit!

What took you so long! ;)  Looks like another good start for you  The boards look great the pastel crayons look to do a nice job.  What did you use for the stone work under the building?  And about the trees in the background yours or trick photography?  Looks to me your trying to get another article in that Book Finescale Railroader!!

Shorpy has some great stuff.
Nice job so far on the reproduction, Marty.  I'll be anxious to see how you do the roof.

jerry the stones are from a piece of a yourke wall, I know a guy who has molds 8)
The "trees" are from one of those decorative brooms. I think I will replace them with caspia for the final shots but they do look like the dead wood in the photo ::)

ken I plan on individual shingles cut from cedar fish wrapper I found at the grocery store, I hope I have the ability to finish it!

Marty if you could post a shot of the wrapper in-tacked I would appreciate it. Does it resemble the same material as in cigar boxes? Pat

Pat, sorry no pic right now.
Actually it is a little thicker and rougher than the cigar box stuff, and I think it is too thick.
Only time will tell but I think either the cigar stuff or the laser peel & stick.
I spent all day gluing these little buggers down........the back side may be metal!!! :-\ :-\
Anyway here is a crappy workbench shot.
Time for a cocktail!

Great job , Jonesey .

I'll be interested to see how you apply the extra 16 courses of shingles that the building in the photo has !

I don't mean to piss in your cocktail , but that roof would have leaked from the day after it was finished .

Marty, From the pic it does look a bit thicker and that whats making it stand up probably, right? Pat

  Marty,

comparing your model with the photo, for me it is not as subtle and delicate as what I am used from you.
Maybe the choice of materials ??

  Jacq

completely off topic,  do you have information/plans of your disconnects shown in the Terrapin pages ??
I am looking for information of this type.

NickO
Thanks,
But I staggered all my seams :D ;D

Jacq,
You right its too coarse, it is too thick but I wanted to try it.
Honestly I think a paper product would provide the detail I was after.
Having it laser cut with an adhesive back would make applying it easier too.

There are plans in one of Unc's books for my disconnects but I think Marc's are on the Terrapin site.

Crystal River Products - Tom to the rescue!!!!!! ;D ;D ;D ;D

Just got off the phone with Tom at CRP and he is sending me some HO shingles in a new material.
These shingles will be a scale 1/2" thick, the width and exposure should be closer to the photograph!
I will post pictures of the rebuilt roof (hopefully) Sunday!

It's done!

(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi263.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fii121%2Flab-dad-jones%2FJerrysHouse.jpg&hash=7eded4e0f970972593cd3a457c474ed6ce2f5fc2)

The shingles are from Crystal River Products.
They are a new material that takes stain wonderfully!!!!!!
These are HO to match the photo better.

What's with that screen door? she's a beaut! where did you get her or how did you make it??
I also like the roof much better. I buy Arturo Fuente cigars for the maghony wrapper, at least that's what I tell my wife, and I cut those up for shingles. I will have to check out these crystal river ones, and find another use for my cigar wraper shingles ; - /
Gil
It's so hot here in Supudsville it's realy cutting into my cigar time, to hot to smoke and too hard to be outside with dive bombing mosquitos.

Well my friend you have outdone yourself.

You know my Grandfather told me one time you can count your friends on one hand, well your right on that hand.  Diane and I are just grateful that we met you and your family.

Jerry

Ps Now get back to work on the Corliss!!
