Title: Chain Drive engine # 1 in 1:20.3 scale
Post by: LLOYD on March 03, 2009, 09:35:09 AM
Hello Compadre,

Enclosed some photos of my first scratchbuilt Chain Drive engine # 1 in 1:20.3 scale!
She's named Nine Fingers, because I built this engine model in 1994, with one broken finger, (on right hand of course) !
About parts of this engine :
Frame, pilot and deck is in wood.
The wheels was from Gary Raymond.
Chain and Sproket wheels from Grandt Line.
Boiler is from Ozark Miniature Dolbeer donkey, also many detail parts.
Cylinder and functionnal valve gear was scratchbuilt from brass and iron.
The motor is Fallhaber placed between the front wheels ( other photo for this detail )
I made 3 others same engine models for European Modelers!
Of course I never see this engine on an old photo, but this chain drive system is plausible for an home made engine, and it is a freelanced model!

Sincerely!
Lloyd

Nicely done project...the disconnects look cool also.

What kind of wood did you use?

Hello,

Thanks my Uncle and Marc for your interests!

Marc, I used exotic wood named Ayous, Samba or Obeche!
The color is yelow/white.
This wood is perfect for modeling, easy to carved and weathering!
It is harder and dense that the Balsa, once worked, it does not have there deformation, therefore it is appropriate for the frames, cars, buildings or trestles!
It is practical to work , it is light,  and it's available in many scales.

Sincerely!

Lloyd

Very nice! Wasn't that featured in the Gazette a few years ago?
