On the finishing of of age old projects AIR SPARES continues a small diorama eventually will be part of a small boat yard (1 Day )
the air spares building specialising in all things Air Compressors - pipe work - gaskets - valves and also the repair of small marine engines along with there spares all photos at the moment are trial fit jobs at the moment or all in the planing of what goes where
First the main building was a small engine shed but the upstairs bit ( up a ladder) was aded and also houses a oil tank
The battery box loco outside will be in a derelict state among general scrap
Down stairs is an open affair ( its in a hot & sticky climate ) with benches and storage - One of the Pipe storage racks on the other side
The unpainted platform on the right is for a vintage Petrol pump (started way back )
early stuff the sides and end of the engine shed
Started work on sign for Air Spares
Pipe storage Racks under construction
Very nice!
Nothing wrong with any of that. It's picturesque and probably will end up a real gem. Satisfactory. -- Russ
I like the improvised pipe storages! And so the shingly surface. Looks very maritime.
A bit more progress - hopefully the finished job should be completed for the Slim Gauge Circle meeting at Rugby
(that word completed I hope and perhaps dream )
The roof I might be changing to some thing more interesting but not to sure about it
So a quick walk round the Compressor and marine engine workshop
Barney
A few more hope its not to boring
nearly there
last one
Fuel pump of a vintage era nearly completed also needs a ladder to get in the loft storage area + more benches inside but really it is never ending
Barney
Slim Gauge Circle meeting in Rugby England May 14th - for all things North American Narrow Gauge - with superb Cheese and onion cobs
I really like what you have done here and I look forward to seeing it at Hilton next month . Your ground cover looks pretty effective , where did you get it ?
Nick
Another beauty. Where do you store all of your models and dioramas? -- Russ
Quote from: finescalerr on April 18, 2023, 12:18:14 AMAnother beauty. Where do you store all of your models and dioramas? -- Russ
Some of them at my house !
It never gets boring to look at such a small but fine masterpiece. I especially like the company logo with the dog.
Bernhard
Russ I have whatever they said to Apollo 13 - something like we appear to have a problem !!
Since down sizing our house storage has become a problem I have stuff everywhere But most of my models have moved on to new owners - sometimes reluctantly others glad to see the back of them !
Nick the ground cover is mainly from https://www.warpainter.net a great little company improving and adding to there collection all the time they come in a 9in x 6in bag a good amount for you money and the little sticky pad sticks like S++t to a blanket - excellent quality gear and a fast service
The earth is mainly sieved dirt and rock from the Lee Bailey narrow gauge site by Ross on Wye and the rail ballast is from the canal bank I also added some ground up bits of bark around the wooded area
Found another one comes in varying sizes but can be trimmed to your liking -I think a very natural look especially in clumps
Barney
Nice work. I'm really liking all the clutter and scrap items around the structure, the landscaping and the weathering. This piece has a lot of charm and character. Can't wait to see the rest of the diorama you are planning.
Stuart
I like the grided plantings. It looks like Bob Irwin's garden at the Getty

Narayan, you may now go stand in the corner. -- Russ
Boring? No! Inspiring, yes!
Not quite finished but now SOLD and the punter was a happy bunny
Barney
So its onward and upward - was going to have a dabble at the big stuff - But still hooked on the 1/35th stuff
So its Back to Murphy"s War - note the broken cables!
A few picks of work so far
Barney
Apologies for the Intense Blue - having a bad day
Barney
Barney, you're thinking about this all wrong. The blue tint isn't "wrong", it's ART! Nice work. -- Russ
Sorry Barney, but I'm concerned about the gears. I know we've been through this before but I'm not convinced by the "straight up and vertical" cogs/gears. Shoot me down in flames if you like but it's something that I couldn't live with.
Les
I promise to try and improve ::)
Barney
Wow! That little crane looks great so far!

I wouldn't be too concerned , Les, as when it comes into my possession in November there won't be anyone around here so discerning ! Here is a photo of an Accurate Armour's Ruston-Bycyrus RB 19 for you to compare.
I hear that you have managed to escape from Alcatraz and are now living anonymously in Leicester . Does that mean we will be able to see some of your "proper" modelling again ?
Nick
Hi Nick, Barney and I seem to disagree on gears. I recall building a 1/35 scale RB17 some years ago based on the Accurate Armour kit plus info from the excellent book on Ruston Bucyrus excavators. That was a diesel machine with the gears covered. The one I will be working on is a steam driven one with exposed gears. I think it's going to have to be 3d printed gears unless anyone on the forum knows of a source of 33mm gears. And yes I am back on the "north island". Not sure about "proper modelling" though.
Les
Les
I did some straight and bevelled 3D printed gears for a 1:34 steam shovel recently (an Osgood I think). That was my sole contribution so no pics.
But it's a great solution to get parts like this for a static model. I'd be cautious about exposing the teeth to any significant load, but visually very accurate. I guess you could cast them if you wanted operating parts.
Lawrence, as our resident 3-D printing guru and professional modeler, would you accept orders for printed parts from forum members? Enquiring minds want to know. -- Russ
And I'm an enquiring mind. The gears I'm looking for are 32-36mm diameter ( I'm working in 1/24 scale.

Firstly, it's not my intention to solicit for work here. But, in principle, I'm open for business.
As a simple guide anyone wishing for parts drawn and printed should supply working drawings/sketches etc to the same standard required to make the part any other way. I CAN work from oblique photos with your wife posed for scale, but I don't enjoy it and pricing reflects that (Unless you happen to be married to one of my favourite starlets, in which case the price will still reflect the difficulty, but I
will enjoy it)! In all seriousness, the old saying 'garbage in, garbage out' is particularly relevant and it's amazing what some expect me to do with virtually no data. You've been warned.
Free to discuss needs by email anyway.

Should be straightforward. My email is in my profile.
It has been evident you never joined the forum to solicit work. It also is likely members of this forum are capable of sending decent plans. As for starlets, did I ever mention that my next door neighbor from primary school through high school was the Oscar winning actress, Sally Field? -- Russ
If it should be brass gears, I have had good experience with this company in Poland: Click (https://shop.kkpmo.com/index.php?language=en&cat=c21_Zahnraeder-und-Triebe-Zahnraeder-und-Triebe.html&XTCsid=4b2954cbdd400e735e84242bdf75797e&cPath=21&=&XTCsid=4b2954cbdd400e735e84242bdf75797e)
Fast delivery, dimensions, number of teeth, module, axle diameter freely selectable...
P.S. I am not related to this company - I just got good results.

Who ?
Les - if you remember a few months back "JAKE CAN MAKE" Done all the drawings for Your "convincing" Straight cut gears
even the correct pattern for the spokes for Ruston machines - His products are outstanding and his quotes very reasonable - unlike others who just can not be bothered with low / small quanties
is site is on https://www.jakecanmake.com

Bernd,
The reason Russ didn't bother to reply as he knew that I knew who she was . He has known me long enough to know when I'm "funnin'"
Nick
Speaking of fun, Nick, have you made progress on remodeling your house? It's been a long time since we've seen photos. -- Russ

Actually it's been longer than that??
Marty just asked me the other day if Nick was done with the house!!!
Jerry
I can't remember when I did post some photos , so here are some of the outside . The inside is mostly finished and we hope to move in soon . I just need to clear it out of all the "stuff" that has accumulated over the years .
A couple more.
Love your paint job.
Actually, you have made considerable progress and the finished house will be a masterpiece.
Russ
Very Nice - looks like an extension to Air Spares !!
Barney
Thanks for the photos, I could never get into 12" to the 1ft scale modelling, you've done well!
Les
It's really quite charming.

I don't blame you . It costs a fortune in weathering powders.
