Title: My new CNC milling machine
Post by: Bernhard on June 14, 2022, 07:02:36 AM
Hello modeling friends

I gifted myself a CNC milling machine for Christmas!
There is a relatively large offer of hobby machines on the market. But most of them do not meet my technical requirements, or are much too expensive. Therefore, after a long search, I decided to buy a little used, self-built machine. However, it was clear to me that I would have to optimize it.
I have done that in the meantime, and now the machine is ready for operation.

This is how the machine was advertised by the seller:

The first thing I had to do was to bring the wiring up to scratch, i.e. bring all the connecting cables to the same length and reconnect them.

Next, all axes had to be aligned. The Z-axis was mounted completely at an angle on the sliding part of the X-axis. Makes me wonder how the previous owner was able to work that way.

Then I found that the Z-axis could not move down far enough for machining my rather flat parts. I therefore mounted an additional T-slot plate on three support bars on the original machine table.
This first required drilling quite a few additional threads into the original machine table.

Then the support bars were screwed on and milled over with a flycutter. This could only be done with lubrication with petrol, which of course makes a huge mess.

Finally, however, that was also done, ...

... and the T-slot plate could be put on.

As a first practical work, I then milled two Plexiglas chip protection plates for the Y-axis on the machine itself.

Everything is mounted: the chip protection plates, a vice and an MDF plate for machining sheet metal parts.

Practical for the operation of the machine:
•   Plate for detecting the position of workpieces.
•   Tool length sensor for set to zero the tool in Z direction.
•   Hand wheel with joystick for manual movement of the axes during setup.

So the machine is now ready to produce the first parts for my new project, which I will report on starting soon.

Your work on that machine is at least as impressive as the meticulous work you do on your models. Just outstanding. -- Russ

Well... for me it's again an overdose of science fiction.
Very impressive but, unfortunately, with my vanishing memory impossible to learn how to.
(You must have smiled a lot seeing my primitive approach more or less as my computer starts to laugh every morning when i enter the room and have not turned it on yet.)

Your's is not a workshop, Bernhard: it's paradise!!!

Thanks Daniel. But I am also only a model making autodidact. For my part, I am always fascinated by the perfect models that you or other members in this forum build with the simplest means. Perfect model making does not need machines, but passion.
But you are right about one thing: my workshop is really a paradise.

Of course it is!
That is the truest thing we can build.

Do you have any other threads where to virtually visit your work area?

Daniel, I do not have a separate thread for my workshop. But now that you can post more and bigger pictures in the forum, I can show a few here.

I am in the fortunate position of having 32 m2 (345 sqft) of workshop space.
Besides the CNC milling machine, I also have a manually operated machine.

And here is a work in progress: on the diorama of a clay pit I can present my bucket chain excavator and the Wilfor Powershovel. I will report on the build in due course.

The wall decoration is of course not from Banksy. Our daughters sprayed them on the walls when we moved into the house 30 years ago. For sentimental reasons, I haven't painted over them yet.

Thank you!!!

That worshop is simply a dream.
After seeing the photos i thought i'll need some time to recover now but then saw the last photo with the bucket excavator diorama and realize there's no hope i'll do.

Sixteen years ago or so i helped to rescue an 0&K one in an abandoned clay ware factory.

Here a drone filming, more recently and whithout the excavator but worth to see:

https://www.drones.nl/videos/2018/06/kleiwarenfabriek-nieuw-werklust-gefilmd-dji-mavic-pro-4k

It was not only a wonder to see the old factory and the machines but it had something really beautifulk for a diorama: the factory had a 500mm gauge line that brought the clay from the other side of the Old Rhine where the clay put was. For crossing the river they ussed a small ferry made just to take the diesel loco and a few skips from one side to the other.

The machine was incredible tangled in the vegetation and even a tree 3,5 meters tall had grown between the rails.
I've lost all photos but in 2014 i saw one waiting to be restored at the  National Narrrow Gauge Museum and took plenty of photos of every detail:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/daniel_1_32_scale/albums/72157688287483571

But since then i accepted it will remain a dream (... unless i win the lottery and buy a real one.)

I am very impressed by both your workplace (but, eventually, also that i may get the day i win the lottery still even then i don't think you will agree to sell your marvelous work.

Now: no one would dare to create such beauty and not fill the forum with photos, so

WHERE ARE THEM???

Daniel

B.t.w., keep being so lazy and never cover those graffiti done by your daughters.

Where's the pizza machine, soda fountain, and easy chair?  But seriously the shop looks like a dream to work in.  Keep the graffiti one day one of the daughters might become famous and you can sell the walls and fund your retirement.

Daniel,
this clay ware factory definitely has character. I especially like the idea with the ferry. I have not seen anything comparable yet.
My bucket dredger is an Ertmer KB 1. The prototype is in the Feldbahnmuseum Wiesloch in Germany and is functional. As a basis for the model I measured it exactly and photographed it.
You can find the thread here:

Lawton,
the equipment important for survival is in the fourth corner of the room, which I have not shown yet.

Are we related? I've got similar decorations (albeit in crayon) acquired the same way in my backroom/workshop.  ;D

O.k., first thank you for your answer, Bernhard.

But i touched the link to your thread and knowing the theme and myself a bit my first impulse was to see how many pages are.
22. That means, if now i vanish for a couple of days everybody should blame you!

You've made my day+++!

Huge thanks!

When, after seeing the prototype and spending a long silence looking at each other, my eyes concluded  it was not doable for me so i started to look arround and found in an old (O&K?)  catalogue a photo of a small dredger at work and i fell in love...

(https://live.staticflickr.com/2806/33895775965_8c695a75ce_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/TDfHhr)DSC07170 (https://flic.kr/p/TDfHhr) by d.caso (https://www.flickr.com/photos/daniel_1_32_scale/), on Flickr

... and decided to build (my version of) that scene in a dedicated diorama.

But still my eyes where turning to each other so i decided to model the escene but replacing the dredger by a more modest version...

This one looks too childish...

(https://live.staticflickr.com/7874/47485291532_d22f11027a_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2fm7wNY)P2210227 (2) (https://flic.kr/p/2fm7wNY) by Daniel Osvaldo Caso (https://www.flickr.com/photos/158027525@N08/), on Flickr

... but this one more acceptable...

(https://live.staticflickr.com/7899/32595538127_b723010d70_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/REmDSF)P2210225 (2) (https://flic.kr/p/REmDSF) by Daniel Osvaldo Caso (https://www.flickr.com/photos/158027525@N08/), on Flickr

Still, it would take too much room with the boats and  a necesarry track along the bank where a piece of portable track and a portable swith should be completing the work, plus, of course a serious wall of tall trees and greenery at the other side. Probably the muses took pity on me and sent me a solution...

Yes, you all may laugh loud, no problem, but is going to be and if i don't succeed i have already a couple of alternatives:

Paul, I also always like to look at the workshops of other modelers. That gives me an idea of what I absolutely have to have.
And yes, good eye. A Hulett ore loader in 1:32th is my current project. The construction of the lower part with  gantry, lary car and bunker is mostly finished. Besides that I have started to build the trucks.
I will start a thread about this build soon.

Bernhard:

Your new cnc mill is a 3 axis engraver which is good for larger scales.  I work in 1:48 and don't feel I need a table as large those who are working in larger scales.  For the immediate future I need something to mill and bore rivet patterns on pieces to join parts for a couple of bridges I want build, along with a model of the East Broad Top's Timber Transfer.  I feel a regular mill with cnc capability is enough for me as I am used to counting revolutions on a standard mill.  Any suggestions?

Additionally, what software can you suggest?

Lawton, we have suppliers who offer hobby milling machines either conventionally or with CNC (e.g. Wabeco). In most cases, a suitable control system is also available. However, I don't know what the market is like in your country.
Then, of course, there is the possibility of converting a conventional machine to CNC yourself. You can often find more information about this in internet forums.
My machine is equipped with an Estelcam control. This also includes software with which the programmes can be generated. The operation is relatively simple, so that even a layman can quickly achieve useful results. Control and software are also available in foreign language versions.
