Title: Weathered FPD7... too much?
Post by: lucas gargoloff on January 28, 2009, 04:31:22 PM
Hi guys! I´ve done this work for a friend in Australia. The model out of the box was too ugly, is a Bachmann standar H0 model, so my friend ask me if I can do with this unit a very rusty and abandoned loco... off course!! Here are the results.
I started with add grafitti decals from Microscale, then applied ink diluited in alcohol. When it dried, I remove all the spare ink with a damped rag with alcohol too. with an airbrush did the rest as you can see.
Hope you enjoy!

I think it looks just right for the scrap pile/"rip-track". I think your friend will be very happy with it.

But if you want a critical review, and opinion...

The overal finish bothers me a bit.  Did you seal/finish the model with a clear-coat finish? (looks like it was)...it all looks like the same level of "shhen". There is not enough differentiation between the sheen of the upper surfaces like the foof and sides...at this age/wear some sufaces and colors will severly fade, and become a completely matte finish.....also by sealing, the dirt and rust streaks have become the same sheen/value as the metal over which they are streaking....thinks like dirt, rain streaks, rust, usually have different light refraction and absorption qualities....and this should be taken into account when weathering/finishing a model.

I agree with Marc,
May be my simple mind can explain it?
The "weathering" is too monochomatic.
There are no "layers" to the weathering.
As a piece ages different "things" happen and layer upon layer is added.
Using multiple mediums (materials) will help solve this.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the nice critics guys!! I have to give it a mate coat now. When I add some chalks, I gave a falt coat with Model Masters, I gives some bright I don´t like, If I applied mate coat, I think will see more realistic, then add brights only in needed parts, metal for example.
I will try it tonight.
Thanks again!!
