Title: Shay, Heisler & Climax interactive models
Post by: SandiaPaul on July 03, 2014, 12:41:38 PM
I just finished these "models" up for the Mt Rainier Scenic Railroad.

I thought some might get a kick out them. The intention was to make deliberately simplified demonstration models of how the basic drive train works for each type of geared engine.  Their new museum opens in a couple of weeks, I also did some graphics that will be in 2 of the old camp cars, that was a collaborative effort with another designer.

There are 3 movies at the end too.

Very excellent! Nice job on those skewed Climax gears. Great way to grasp the differences.

Very didactic and reduced to the basics but appealing, though!

Thanks! They are not really a "scale" more built around the gears I could find. I could not find any skew bevel gears from a commercial product that looked right and eventually found these on Shapeways. They are cast bronze and don't run very smoothly at all, despite me trying to "fix them up" with needle files. Actually the real ones were "as cast" too so its kind of prototypical that way! They black is acetal plastic(Delrin), which is a good bearing that does not any lubrication.
