I'm Arnaud (=Arno), I'm French but I live in Virginia for a few years.
Recently Alexandre (http://www.finescalerr.com/smf/index.php?topic=2007.0) told me about the forum, like him I'm a big fan of Maschinen Krieger. (http://www.boudoiron.com/search/label/Ma.K)
Anyway He said that will be a perfect place to show my WIP of my 1/24 scale choo choo project!

I fell in love with these switchers a couple years ago. I saw few pictures of her sisters in a book at Barnes & Noble, then I did some search and found the Norfolk & Western Historical Society website (http://nwhs.org/index.php)... Since I visited a couple times the Museum of Transportation at Roanoke VA.
Obviously I'm a great fan of steam engines and since I'm kid.
About scale model, I prefer fix models on display base... This engine will be fix!

I started with a wheel. I always thought if I can build one the rest could be possible, slowly, but possible

Lot of styrene pieces. Curves made with Milliput putty. The frame' sides must be perfectly flat, they will be  :)

Awesome project! That is such an unusual, and interesting locomotive, I can see why you'd want to model it. Great choice of scale too. (I also model in 1/24th scale.)

And I like your "low tech" methods. It's inspiring to see such complex shapes as that wheel, being made with ordinary hand tools.

I really like this prototype,  100% function and 0% form!   

I'll be following this with interest

After casting, all will be ready to complete all pedestals (x8) with their driving box + wedges and the bolt thimble.

All will be rigid, like a static model + base. Unfortunately, to make the things functional is above my possibilities. I can't machined metal, I don't have a mill, big tools neither  :'( plus I don't have room for them  :D
I'm building this as a sculpture, the most accurate than I can  :)

I Know a few casters in USA, they are all great I think. The one I used is local (No shipping!), very local, we are in the same street  :) He works for a company who does 3D printing, supplies for war games and figures. With the agreement of the big boss, the caster can do some extra after his work, using all the workshop's stuff for his own business.
He's very good.

Your styrene hand "milling" skills are quite remarkable.  Color me very impressed.

That is high quality casting, mind you it makes a big difference when the masters are as good as yours .

That's a huge challenge you want to meet with such a project...
Especially when the quality of the work is as good as yours!

I prefer to think about this project only piece by piece. What I mean is each part is a smaller challenge  :)  Like building a Brake Cylinder or a Air Pump or.... the first one was the wheel (After it I thought "hey, this is happening!").
Then maybe one day, with all those parts together, finally the Switcher #825  :)

By the way, I'm very excited to build a 9"1/2 air pump!!!

Old Pullman used to specialize in 1:48 and 1:32 scales and so their rail sizes ran a little smaller than those who catered to the outdoor crowd. I think their code 201 might be suitable for you.

It all looks beautiful.

...but if I may make a critical suggestion; stop using the green Squadron putty, and use the Tamiya "regular putty" instead, it will sand and finish much cleaner and smoother than the Squadron of any color/type.

Hé hé  ;) It's not Squadron putty, as already say it's DURO putty, aka "Green Stuff". Are you familiar with it? Usually people hate it. It's the most sticky compound putty (blue+yellow)! I love it  ;D
About Squadron Putty, you're right! :D I tried the green one, smells terrible, not smooth enough... One thing is good with it: It dries bloody fast! (so fast it melts the plastic of your model :-\)

I use only Tamiya putty, white and gray  8)

Arno, I meant code 205, which you now know is 0.205-inch high. It probably scales out to something like 120 pound rail in 1:24. Code 148 would scale about 6 inches high (that's what I would use) and code 250 would be 1 scale foot high if my arithmetic is correct. (It's usually wrong.) -- Russ

Aaaak....you're right :D, I HATE DURO....the stuff is an absolute nightmare....like you say sticky like crazy, and it gets everywhere....a nightmare to clean.  Just out of curiosity, why that instead of Sculpy or Milliput?

Now I know I can't find a perfect 1/24 copy of rails (as a standard US rail section) Because they are all adapted to the model railway. The flanges are deeper.

@Marc - I'm very comfortable with the Green Stuff  :) Even its sticky side is an advantage for me!
The classic tip is: use metal tool, rub it against a wet sponge or use petroleum jelly. The famous tip is to rub the tool against the skin of your nose! I'm not kidding gentlemen it's the best one :D

I use Milliput as well

Not sure about that.  I'f we can get dead scale rail and use dead scale flanges in 1:76 scale there must be something that's scale in 1:24 surely?

What are the white things with the ends curving down, over two of the axles? Are they part of the equalization system?

Yes, they are part of the spring gear. Called equalizing levers. Because the boiler, there is no clearance for the springs on the 3th and 4th drivers >The driving-wheel springs are inside the frame. Note: The first and 2nd driving-wheels springs will be over the driving boxes (see the spring saddles).

A couple of years ago I watched a guy build a 1:24 scale loco from paper and he did it much as you are doing it, piece by piece. I couldn't wait for each new post and feel the same way now. -- Russ

When I see so nice assemblies, made out of styrene or metal, I'm always pondering between the will to leave them unpainted to better show the assembly work or to complete the process. We should make two models, the didactic one and the realistic one...
In some cases, it would be the shortest path to madness, though...

About the foundry marks (http://i573.photobucket.com/albums/ss174/ArnoB/NW%20Class%20W6/brakefulcrumgreen_zps3f77ef3c.jpg). I have no visual references for these Brakets, but I know there are always symbols on casting pieces...
I found similar pieces with marks from the same locomotive builder and did the same ones  :)

Here is my first attempt on the Brake Cylinder's back (http://i573.photobucket.com/albums/ss174/ArnoB/NW%20Class%20W6/BrakeCylinder02_zps41c571b7.jpg): 14" (Cylinder's diameter) and  numbers/letters than I can't tell now what they are :D It's a bit rough on the pic, but good enough for my eyes... I used a good pic as reference and the symbols wasn't better.  ;D

Pfft, I've seen pattern lettering on full sized castings that were totally illegible.  Your's look fine.
