Brilliant! Beutiful scrtch and bash work, on a wonderfully unique and complex subject. Really looking forward to seeing how this build progresses.

Here's a picture of Barney's first attempt at a Holt Trench Digger . It's not bad . I only just managed to catch it as he threw it into the dustbin .
Way cool!!!
Right up my alley - I love what OSHA hates.

Not much point absconding with it yet as it isn't finished and won't be by Saturday . Anyway , it'll need its regulation ten coats of Humbrol Khaki before it is ready to be nicked . And when it is , I'll be doing the nicking , to add to my collection of Holt Trenchers ,

Moving on to the Bucket wheel -according to the reading the bucket wheels came in various sizes 9 foot to 14 ft some were even bigger and the buckets were sized and shaped according to the customers requirements the model has a 9 foot wheel with 2 ft buckets (the larger wheels had smaller buckets)

Considering the lack of reference and "plans" wonderful work. Didn't realise you were conting the rivets in the part count per bucket ;D
As told you I am a real fan of the work you done on that wheel, and although pains me to say it .... That is the proper way to do gears
think there one rivet out of line, better just hand the lot to Nick
'mazin' absolutely amazin'.
Impressive. -- Russ
On the subject of rivet alignment - wait to you get an eye-full of the finished bucket wheel -I have checked the photos several times and there does not appear to be any order of alignment whatsoever + different size brackets fixed with odd sized rivets and odd bolts

Are all those head bolts torqued to spec's ::)
Unbelievable job I would haven never know that you started with Legos ??? ??? ???
MPH
Satisfactory. -- Russ
Great job on the whole model and the engine looks superb.
That engine looks very similar to the Caterpillar 60 engine.
Did you have the water pump and Mag printed
Rick
This is amazing work! Where do you find such good reference material? I find I'm often stumped even when starting with a kit due to lack of good prototype information.
David
Looks even better than the pics you sent me, nice to see how you built up the engine.
Mind you still a lot to do and not a lot of time ...... ;D ;D
Rick
I reckon the water pump and the magneto are from off the LZ (Mirror models ) Cat Sixty conversion ......... Barney is a great fan of their stuff and resin kits overall ;) ;)
Holy Mackerel! You're definitely going to win the NBW-consumption contest! This monstrosity has hardware everywhere ... no idea how you're keeping track of it all ... but dang it sure keeps shaping up to be more-n-more interesting! -- Dallas
David – reference for this one was patchy /confusing/very little measurements – photos and totally nonexistent in parts (nothing like a challenge) the engine at first with one photo showed a standard Holt Aurora 6 cylinder plenty of info' on that one it's a basic standard 4 cylinder with 2 pots added - second description no photos said a 6 or 8 cylinder airship engine –third description said it was a marine engine! Confused or what! Then it turned out that no engine was fitted just a rolling chassis supplied by Holt and who knows what engine was fitted – so I ended up by going down the middle – its good in one way and it has the added attraction that it really throws the "rivet counters and measurement anoraks "off course big time !
The water pump and magneto were out of the scrap box (best place for anything resin)
The only two bits I could find out of a complete kit that did not look like the dog had chewed
And one for "Gordon the wind up" my love affair with anything resin ended a long time ago
I will stick to my LEGO blocks – at least they are square !

Oh , Gordon , you know as well as everyone that it has got to be same colour as the other trencher that I have got so that they will complement each other when they are sitting on my mantlepiece (obviously the fire won't be on ) ,
Nick
I would suggest Old Sutherland plaid as an appropriate finish. -- ssuR
Awesome piece of work! The number of nuts/bolts is astounding.
Stocks of nuts /bolts are at an all time low - nearly finished now - and no it has not caught fire at the front just painted back of radiator and timing covers before assemble of rad' to chassis

Looks great Barney, well worth all the work you have put in to it.
Do I detect some experimentation in the colour ;D
Amazing how much difference a little paint makes, even if it's just a primer coat. It suddenly goes from being a very complex, incredible model; to a very complex, incredible piece of machinery!
That is truly a stunning piece. Beautiful workmanship and detail. Very inspiring.
A real thanks for sharing the whole process here, have really enjoyed it.
Mad Max would be proud to be behind the wheel of that beast!
In impressive capture of a unique piece of machinery. Been great to watch this grow.
Cheers,

Amazing, I agree with all the others have said.

Congratulations to a well deserved Gold medal today at Euromilitaire and very nice meeting you Barney!

A gold medal for a model without chains, antlers, and dabs of bright orange "rust"? Has everyone on the Continent lost his cotton pickin' MIND?
Well, I suppose it's a fairly satisfactory model. I guess a gold medal wouldn't hurt.
Russ
Congrats!
Congratulations. Well deserved.
Would love to see pics of the finl painted model.
Wouldn't we all ;D
He becomes a bit like Motor Manufactures before a new model launch, everything gets covered up with white sheets , no cameras are allowed within the exclusion zone and satellite overflights are banned !
Probably could take a guess at the colour though ;)
Congratulations -- that is one heck of an amazing scratchbuild! And, another vote for finished pix ... please! ;) -- Dallas
Thanks for the nice comments -Photos tomorrow long haul home driving made difficult with wait of gold in the boot (that's the bit at the back of the car or is it the trunk)

"Help required" of late I have become disappointed with my paint jobs –how can I give it a bit more lived it look or add a bit more life – I'm not into total dented / rusted chips and covered in dust or mud as is the trend for today's model military vehicles . For this type of vehicle most of them never saw action and some never got much further than the testing grounds or factories " Abigail" was probably used more after the war for laying pipes and clearing ditches - a bit of help or just your thoughts on "the paint jobs"
Is it just adding a bit of high lighting or added shadows? In my view its only comments that make us move forward and improve.
You're constructive views please what is it lacking? My apologies to Russ for the Orange rust it's the Lighting!

I like it!
For some more "use" weathering think about how that would happen.
boots landing on the floor will "polish" the steel.
Anywhere hands would constantly touch would be polished or shiny.
The buckets & tines would polish then have fresh rust very quickly.
I'm sure fuel and oil would get spilled.
And then unless it is kept in a garage rain streaks and dust of course.
-Marty
I don't think it needs much if I'm honest but then I like subtle. Some of the military stuff is to my mind overdone and almost like a characiture. You don't send to see OTT weathering here but some do chose prototypes that are pretty far gone.
For me it's just a question of some subtle highlights and lowlights and attention to patina rather than colour as such. I think your colouring is very nice but perhaps it's jst a bit flat?
Having said that I wouldnt imagine that the paint would stay on the buckets for long but I wouldn't expect to see a lot of rust either while it was in service. Perhaps a touch of polished steel?
It's fine Barney, that's your style and we would recognise your work anywhere by it!
I personally think that it must be great to have your unique style & presentation, and for these pieces where ingenuity and scratch building skills are paramount then this type of paint approach is perfect ...... It's a bit different when you are churning out the Nth version of a mass produced kit.
Anyway we would loose all the fun of taking the mickey if you changed the colours you use
You do realise that as soon as Nick knows you are unhappy with it he will be on his way to take it off your hands
It's beautiful. If you feel it needs something extra, I go along with Marty's suggestion. -- Russ
Thanks for all the useful and constructive comments its onward and upward again !!

Just got back from the Trossachs so have missed all of this . Don't worry , Gordon , I'll pick it up from Hilton along with The Onion Catcher later in the month .
Took pictures of two out of the three Puffers that we saw on our trip . Photos later . The Vital Spark at Inverary has been photoed to death so didn't bother with it . Anyway , I wasn't prepared to do battle with "The Blue -Rinse Hair Brigade" on their day out coach trip who were infesting the place .
