Something to fill the lull between the Modelers Annuals. ;)
BREAKING NEWS FROM AK
We just recived an exciting information and some pics refering to a new product... that will be released in few days. It is a new Magazine in english totally dedicated to the weathering. Like the tittle say, it will be the weathering magazine, a publication that will show only modelling techniques with detailed step by steps by some of the best modellers. The weathering and the paint effects will be the only subject, so, don't expect plastic kit reviews, construction techniques or other stuff. The weathering will be the main subject and the first issue attack the RUST and everything that is involved in this popular effect. The rust will be presnt in not only tanks, but in robots, ships, civil cars and much more, inlcuding color profiles, photo references and many, many tips. The magazine will inlcude a nice surprise that we cannot say here, but will be something really exciting and fresh. Don't miss it, because the modelling will be a bit more fun since the moment you open this new publication. The realse date will be this month 100% sure, so...just wait a bit more. 8 Euros will be the cost and will be released each 3 months by now.

Will be available in print format, and digital version for the iPad.
Mmm, there seems to be some familiar looking models on the front cover ! Definitely a magazine that looks like worth buying . Even if it is just to see some of Marc's finished models .
I guess we won't be seeing it in our local newsagents next to Russ's favourite periodicals !
Nick
Would this magazine have any articles by an administrator of this website? -- Russ
How does one get hold of this here publication?
Mail order? When, where?? I am so easily tempted, {the only thing I cannot resist}.
Will most likely be available from here, once it comes out: http://www.ak-interactive-usa.com/index.html (http://www.ak-interactive-usa.com/index.html)
I will update/post info, if I find out anything more definite.

... Methinks I'd like to purchase a printed copy too, as I do not have an iPad, but I'm afraid it wouldn't be available on the continent ...

... would be very much appreciated ...
It's published out of Spain...so pretty sure it will be available in the EU.
Unfortunately the website is not yet online theweatheringmagazine.com (http://theweatheringmagazine.com)
This magazine looks very promising. I recently ordered some of AK's weathering effects, including their chipping fluid, and am excited to try them out. Marc, now we know what all the secrecy was about your Sands of Time build ;-) Looking forward to seeing that in all its glory.
Gino
Look's interesting :)
Sounds like it could be a very handy printed how-to-guide on the one dedicated subject. May just have to look into that one. Thanks for the heads up Marc...and the shameless self plug by the looks ;D
Cheers,
Dan
Congrats Marc!!
Interesting. I wonder though if the articles will all involve the use of the publishers products?
My project will likely be the weakest one. They contacted me two weeks before the article due date, so I had to pull out an old project that was far enough along and was suitable for the subject to meet the needs. (Not using that as an excuse...as, yes, it did give me the opportunity to finish a project ;D, but it also made me realize when I tried to get back on it, how weak the project was to begin with. Oh well....it's over...the project will shortly be off to a new home...and maybe if the article doesn't suck too much, I'll get the opportunity to do another one.)
Ray, we were not given the requirement to use their products. Though obviously when a mfr gives you the opportunity to participate in something like this, you try to return the favor by using their products when you can. (They wanted you to show your approach/ technique to a given situation...not learn,or change to, a new one just so you could showcase them) I used products from them, as well as others. I then provided the text/captions for each of my photos....from reading them on the preview page they appear to have edited and rewritten them somewhat...I assume they did this for everyones description, so as to get a cohesive feel and approach to the mag/contents.
I think of these mags as being mini FAQs....except instead of getting an SBS from one modeler for a specific effect, you get numerous approaches and on different subjects....thus letting you choose, adapt and combine, to suit your needs or build from.
"My project will likely be the weakest one."
WRONG! It probably will be one of the stronger ones.

Exactly . Sometimes , Marc , you don't half talk bollox !
From one of your Fanboys !
This sounds pretty exciting!
However, I hope that the content will cover enough variety in scales. To make it interesting for a broader audience it will be crucial to include smaller scale, both civilian and military.
It is sad that the "modeltrainsweathered" forum is gone, that was a great source of inspiration and learning for me. To combine information like that with military modeling would be very interesting.
And I am disappointed by the most boring title ever. They couldn't call it "Rust'n Dust" or "Rustbucket" or "Dirt Bird" or "Fade" or something like that? Boooooring!
All bitchin' aside - I look forward to this and will certainly be up to spend some money!
I got mine today.
Just skimmed it - very well done.
Looks like a great resource.
I look forward to reading it, lots to take in.
Definitely worth it for me.
Marty
I just received mine today.
The first impression is very good.
Compliments to the AK team and certainly worth buying.
OK,
A more thorough review by me.
First off I am not any sort of literary genius or scholar.
Just a modeler like you guys.
Obviously if a manufacturer is going to publish a magazine they are going to show a lot of their products.
However the magazines articles also discuss several other manufacturers "potions".
There is quite a bit of varying subject matter, even though the magazine is geared toward "rust".
I think those with an open mind will find lots of inspiration and techniques to try.
Pinheads will always complain......
The magazine has a great feel (read "heft") to it and the images are very well done.
I find the layout and printing to be quite pleasing.
I'm a little confused by the girl, but I am not complaining about a half naked well endowed woman gracing selected pages!
They should have had FichtenFoo do a limited production run of a figure for those who bought the first issue!
On a final note; May be it is the Spanish to English translation but I found a lot of spelling a grammatical errors.
And thats something coming from me! I am a very poor speller, but can usually form one or two complete sentences.
Overall if your looking for new ideas or techniques explained clearly and with great reference pictures (model and prototype) it is a good magazine!
-Marty
Thanks Marty. Still waiting for mine, but I'm sure it will be worth the wait.
So should I grace some pages of the upcoming Modelers' Annual with a half naked, well endowed girl? Indeed, the ensuing "product review" alone should be worth reading! -- ssuR
I seem to recall some RC airplane mags that used some pretty girls on their covers holding a plane.

Do you mean you're having second thoughts?

Just my opinion .. but for me .. that would be preferable to a half-naked, well endowed man.
I had one hell of a time getting the first issue of the Magizine ??? I finally got one shipped in a couple weeks ago. I got the second issue today at a local hobby shop :D called me friday that it was in. I like this mag I enjoyed the first issue on rust!!....the second is on dust. Wish they[ came out ]with the Mag years ago. ;D
Good to hear you finally got it and now found a local soure. :)
I got the second issue in the mail today....looks good, look forward to reading it.
Okay,
Other than Craig's LHS where can we find these in the states?
I'd check my LHS but they never have anything I need. THEY SUCK! sorry just venting. Still upset AK abandoned the US.
I would subscribe for the year but it is 38 pounds and each issue is 8 pounds, may be my math and conversion is off (4 times 8 is 32) ??? but is it not usually cheaper to get the whole year? :P
I even wrote Adam (I think) when rust came out and told him.

You been hitting the bottle again boy?
MIG stopped having a us dcentral distributor, AK still has one, and it is up and running just fine ....here is the URL. http://www.ak-interactive-usa.com/
I don't konw who of any Adam at AK.....so maybe that's why you got no respons ;D......the person running AK USA, is Iain. :)
You should be able to order the mag directly through the US site....its shown right on the front page and listed as $54 US, for a year (4 issues).....think thats about the same as Russ's mag?

I think he has been inhaling too many glue fumes . I suspect he was referring to Adam Wilder . Poor Boy is getting his MIGs mixed up with his AKs . That'll go down well in the MIG camp ,
Nick
If he is mixing up his MIGs and AKs it is well he isn't in the Russian armed forces either!

You're right , because his head would be befuddled with vodka instead .
Its the RUM dammit! :-[ :P
Yes i have all my migs and AKs all mixed up.
Good news i can order the mag
Shh.... dint tell Ian or Adam but especially Ringo!
mj
Did anyone have problems paying for thier order on the AK site using a credit card. I kept getting an error when trying to verify my Visa
Thanks in advance
RichD
I think the site is down/not functioning right t the moment because of the storm issues. (Iain that runs the shop/site lives in the zone. Try dropping him an email if you still hve a problem in a dy or so.
I use Viisa w/ no problem.
Just got the news that the Weathering Mag is now available for digital download from this link:
http://www.pocketmags.com/viewmagazine.aspx?titleid=1453&title=The+Weathering+Magazine (http://www.pocketmags.com/viewmagazine.aspx?titleid=1453&title=The+Weathering+Magazine)
I have not checked it out, as I get mine in tree-ware form, ....but you can apparently dowload it directly to your PC Android devices, Kindle, PC and Mac.....but will need to install the App to read it on an iPad, and iPhone
Wow. I didn't know the digital format was that new. I just happened to decide earlier today to order the paper copies, went to the website, and saw the digital ones. Since the first issue was unavailable, and since I'm pinching pennies like mad these days, I ordered the digital ones.
Overall, I don't have any complaints. You have to download an app and register an account in order to view the issues, which is unfortunate. I mean, it's not inherently bad- the viewer (I'm currently using a Motorola Xoom tablet) works well and the photos are pretty high resolution, so I can zoom in on them and really see details. But if, someday, the app is no longer available, you wouldn't be able to view them if you needed to migrate to a new device. On a PC it might be a bit different, though. I haven't checked yet. I would assume the app is a file download you install, and so as long as you backup the install file and your downloaded issues, you'd be alright. Assuming the app doesn't need to connect to the web to verify licenses or anything.
Seriously, though- Adobe would make a killing if they could come up with a reasonably decent means of copy protecting a PDF, then licensing that out to digital format publishers.
See that's why paper magazines are superior!
When the end of the wold arrives I will have plenty to read!

And plenty of loo roll as well .
I downloaded and viewed the "Dust" version of the online magazine on my wife's 3rd gen iPad (with the Retina display.) The photos were very clear, I'm happy with viewing it this way. But I really didn't like the 'girly photos' mixed in with the rest of the magazine. They were sufficiently distracting/off-topic to be annoying.
dave
I have just recieved the Rust and Dust issues. I've only skimmed the Rust one and it is a nice concise gathering of step by step info with a handy materials "recap" at the end. I'm almost ready to start thinking about getting interested in starting something.
