I figured I would start a thread for my experiments in 1/35th.
"Wesleybeks" posted the image below in the "photo of the day" thread and I knew it was perfect for my eventual 1/35th dio. (I hope he does not mind me reposting it here - if so I will delete it).
(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi263.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fii121%2Flab-dad-jones%2FIMG_0969.jpg&hash=437327b66b7586a318b62ec19c6de05dc733e706)
And here is my end result;
(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi263.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fii121%2Flab-dad-jones%2Fdrumstand.jpg&hash=25d4516247cdfda193f469e02f318dcf46117ca5)
FWIW the nozzle is 55 (scale) inches above the ground.
The drum came from the Tamiya allied accy kit.
The stand is styrene & music wire and the wood is,... well wood.
I will continue to add stuff here for my (eventual) 1/35 dio.

Marty, that is one hell of an experiment ...... brilliant work, especially love the rust/paint effects you have achieved on the support legs.
Please don't post details your actual build after the experimental stage ........... I may just have to take stamp collecting

Hey , Gordon , don't you have in your possession an old oil drum and a pallet ? I'm sure I saw one at your place last Saturday ! Maybe you could do a British version to go with your Series 1 Landie and stone wall ? ! ?
I'm sure you could do a miles better job than our Floridian friend Corporal Jones !

Actually , Jerry , it is Corporal Jones . Check out the British TV programme called "Dad's Army " . You'll see what I mean then .
Thinking about it , it would be more appropriate if I called you "Corporal Jones" , but as your name isn't Jones , it doesn't quite work .
Nick
Private Ogden, please report to Corporal Jones for KP duty.
Marty, your little 1:35 gizmo is satisfactory.
Five Star General (and general goofball) Russ
Wow Marty.
That turned out brilliantly. Glad I posted something someone could use.
Thanks guys!
It was a fun 3 evening project.
Hoping to get a good start on the pipe rack before I leave on liberty!
Cpl. Jones
Where did you get the nozzle for the hose?
A nice little project - superb modelling and paint job - what was the tap /nozzle on the hose made of ?
Barney
The hose is solder.
The nozzle is made up of two Grandt Line hex "unions" for .032" pipe
I left the solder stick out for the nipple.
The lever is .010" x .020" styrene
The brass is Vallejo Bronze and the yellow handle is cheap craft paint.
Some artists oils for the "oil".
-Marty
I thought you were going to model this. I think you just showed us another pic of the full size scene! :)
Wow, looks great!
Chris
Well this should put you all at ease...........
I built the material rack this week after the oil drum.
Legs are .062" angle, wires are .015" and the slats are .010 x .100"
Was going along great - I thought I would go cross eyed making all the "materials" to stack on it.
Then painting all 147 pieces different shades of rust/brown/black/silver.
Not to mention working with .010" thick styrene.
So today I placed all the pieces - looked great!
Figured a light dusting of matt varnish to blend/bind it all in place.......
>:( :( :-[ :'( AARRRGGGGG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! F%&*ING varnish went cloudy on me!
Anyway, I tried to save it - I rinsed it off with some mild solvent.
Fixed the cloudy but now i have some white spots to touch up, hopefully it is salvageable. ??? :'(
Figured I would post anyway (I like to post a progress pic on Sunday - sort of a personal goal)
taken on my phone as it does not warrant a "real" picture yet!

Marty
It looks good... a little touch up and it'll be fine.
-MJ
A very nice job. And I'm sure you will figure at a way to fix it. You usually do.
Jerry
Great start in 1/35 scale! Keep them coming....!
Anders
Well.............
I fixed it, as best as I could. I think is it okay, not as good as it was but passable for a background piece.

I must be missing something. Is something supposedly wrong with the model? It looks fine to me. -- Russ
Looks good to me. At least from my house ;D
Nice job Mr. Jones.
Jerry
sure does
Nice rack! Great junk ... cool busted up Acme sign ... dig the ragged-out tire too. Whatcha do to the tire to get the effect? -- Dallas
Thanks guys.
The colors were better before the matt screwed me.
QuoteWhatcha do to the tire to get the effect?
Dallas,
That was easy; just did burnouts in my 1:35 hot rod!
actually just put it on a mandrel on the lathe and sanded itMarty
Thanks, Marty! Simple idea but great inspiration ... too often we see "perfectly good" tires in junk piles ... your worn-out tire is what belongs there. Very nice. -- Dallas

No Sir Nick it's just a bug he picked up from you!!!!
Jerry
Let me clarify, Nicky-poo: I consider 1:35 and 1:32 close enough in size to functionally be the same scale. Choosing one over the other has more to do with what you model and the parts you can obtain than the size itself. So I advocate neither scale; but I applaud outstanding craftsmanship in that general proportion (which, in many ways, I consider an ideal size).
By the way, I know you were joking. But maybe some people don't know about our bizarre relationship.
Russ
Oh crap here we go again with he 1:32 vs. 1:35 nonsense.......... ;)
Dont worry either of you, this is just a little fun to challenge myself.
Try new subjects, materials, painting and weathering.
I'm looking forward to getting back to the proper scale (1:48), and the really big one too!

God Marty you don't have to get mad at Russ & Nick and bring out the guns!!!!!!!! :) There only kidding there pals you know, I think.

Oh crap! We've seen the legs of the beast ... and now it's clear the body has a nasty stinger ... somebody step on the damn thing before it attacks! ;D

Cor , Russy-Wussy , who rattled your cage ? Oh , I forgot , I did ! And quite unintentionally as well . Which makes it even better .
I wasn't actually trying to stir anything up , it is just that Marty has been pussyfooting around these scales for ages with his tichy O Scale stuff and his humungous 1/16th behemoths that he has finally realised that the best scale is somewhere in the middle . Isn't that right , Marty ! ( Just say yes , Marty , as we don't want to raise the Old Boy's blood pressure again . You know what happened last time .)
And the only people who don't know about our bizarre ( that's one way of putting it) relationship must have just landed from Planet Zog , and they have got more important things to worry about .
Yes Lord Nicky, resistance is futile.
Yes Lord Nicky....You are wise and powerful.....but Russerella is the all knowing master of our domain (name).

Well, now that everything is resolved and we're all intimate and cuddly again, it's time to applaud Marty's bizarre model. -- Russ
Most Cool!
Part of doing this was to try new things (to me).
I like to challenge myself.
I have never used Tamya paint before.
Somewhere I thought I read where even though it says "acrylic paint"
it is actually a laquer. Anyways thats what I used to thin it.
No special ratio, just topped off the bottle with some laquer thinner.
Shot it through my airbrush @ 25 psi.
Man is this stuff FLAT!!!! I love it. Covers great without hiding any details!
Smells good too! 😜
Here is the base of XF-49

Mj
So in keeping with the "learning/trying new things'
I decided on a WWII inspired "warhawk" paint job.
Never done this before;
Use poster tac as a mask.
On the body I had some blue stuff, on the legs all I could find was Elmer's brand.
Seemed to work the same.
Once used it is disposed of anyway.

I used vellum instead of the kits clear.

Looks good, but how are you going to shrink it down to 1/35th? ;)
Nice. But do they work???? ;D
Jerry
Yeah! Ditto what Ray said ...
-- Dallas
Thanks! ;D
No need to shrink - its almost .875" long!

Time to park this one.

I had hoped to add some scenery materials but I want to move on.
I still have the two "figures" to do but painting figures is something I have to want to do....
I learned a lot during this adventure, I hope to be able to use what I learned.
Already started on another project; research, drawing plans and ordering material.
I'll give you a hint, I've done two other items along this line......
-Marty
Outstanding! Love the setting with the Hornethropter sitting in the service area. Nice! -- Dallas
Excellent job Marty. Just enough details to show it off.
A new proect let's see could it be "BIG"????
Jerry
Marty, Could the next project be.........another Donkey Engine :D
Oh yeah, forgot to guess on the new project ... I'm going with another 1:16 machine shop item. ??? ;D -- Dallas
Satisfactory. -- Russ
That's a good idea for a diorama setting.
Thanks guys!
I wish I coulda forced myself to pain the "crew"
Dallas,
You win the prize - see Russ
Jerry is disqualified due to insider information.
Now can you guess which piece?......
Mj
If it's a hand-operated vintage deli slicer, please make a spare one in 1/35 scale! ;D
(I saw this while researching possible interior details and immediately thought: "Marty ... 1/16 scale ... not me!")
-- Dallas
A broom ??? ;D
Dan
PS; also really like the setting you have put the Hornthropter into Marty, which will make a nice piece when you get the chance to return and finish it.
Maybe we should have a broom challenge build!
Yea!!!!
Any scale just got to be a broom like my wife drives.
Um, was that out loud?
