Title: Fire Hydrant
Post by: JESTER on March 26, 2012, 10:35:11 AM
Is there any Fire Hydrant model kits or anything similar?

I want to try and replicate this. I might have to scratch build it and make castings but I would rather buy a kit.

Funny,
I had/have often thought of making one.
All the different components and such would be a fun project.
The top is really only the hard part (I think....)
What size?

I was hoping at least 4". I want to try a bunch of weathering techniques and I think a Hydrant would be a good platform.

Try the "Toys-Rape-Us" store, or whatevere its called... IIRC I have seen small hydrants packaged with kids cheap plastic fire trucks or "firemans sets".

...or maybe something like this hydrant cup would work:

Seems like it would probably wouldn't be too difficult to scratchbuild one, especially in such a large scale.

Not big enough for your project ... but for the 1/35 modelers, Alliance Model Works makes a nice one (photo below, and I have a sample in hand):

http://www.am-works.com/store/lw35052-drainage-manhole-covers-fire-hydrant-p-78.html

Doozy Model Works make them in 1:24 scale:
http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10178322

Try a web search for "scale fire hydrant" (in quotes to get exact phrase) ... there should be some out there in 1:12 (dollhouse) scale ... saw a crappy looking one in 1:6 scale ... maybe some better ones with a little more surfing.

Cheers,
Dallas

Hmm ... turns out you can get die-cast fire hydrant-shaped pencil sharpeners inexpensively at amazon.com, ebay, etc ... looks like they're about 3" or so tall ... cost around $3 or so.  Search "fire hydrant pencil sharpener" and/or "die-cast fire hydrant" searches.  AND ... curiously, there are lots of other weird little items that have been made into pencil sharpeners ... some oddball neat stuff.   -- Dallas

Thanks Dallas, would never have thought of looking under pencil sharpeners ......... now found a British pillar box which has solved a problem ;)

Tim

here is another one, no idea on size though ............ shop is in NY

and I am almost tempted to bid on this one

Gordon --

For some reason, I thought of you when I saw a little popcorn wagon pencil sharpener ... made me think, "hmm ... that's the sort of interesting/unusual (and/or weird) kinda thing that Gordon would model."  ;)

Cheers,
Dallas

This seems like it would be a great candidate for someone with a 3D printer..  any takers?

Oooo...Oooooo...I want one of those popcorn machines....!

Food for thought - Another area to look at is refrigerator magnets,
which is how the stove on the left side of this photo of the Rainbow
Motel diorama started life:

Further to Ken's suggestion ... there were a variety of Coke-machine (and/or cooler) refrigerator magnets that scale close to 1/24 ... Dallas

I was chatting with my friend about wanting to find a model and he said another on of our friends actually made a hydrant a while ago and he might actually still have the molds so I might be in luck!

It is not the desired scale, but it shows a great model implementation of a German fire hydrant in scale 1:22,5.
Leo documented his way from the drawing to the cast white metal model here (http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=de&sl=auto&tl=en&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.buntbahn.de%2Fmodellbau%2Fviewtopic.php%3Ft%3D7278) (google translated).
The original German thread can be seen here (http://www.buntbahn.de/modellbau/viewtopic.php?t=7278&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=hydrant&start=0).

I was in Chicago for a few days and took a bunch of Hydrant pics. Here are a few:

Hi Jester,

tidying up my front garden from the "presents" some nice school kids occasionally leave for me came across this .............. thought it might be of interest

(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi232.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fee275%2Fgfadvance%2FOddsSodsMarch12012.jpg&hash=4b43e449a60ea1a6438e83b6d5e4dd9f93391a5c)

Believe it is the top off a Krispy Kream Doughnuts package , with a piece of scrap pipe it might be the start of a hydrant ?

That would be a huge hydrant!!

Here's the one my friend made. I hope I can get the original molds!
It was made in Solid Works and printed on a 3D printer.

That's sweet. How big is it?

It looks to be about 4 inches tall. I don't have one yet but judging from the mouse and the phone it's close to 4 or 5 inches.

It must have cost a fortune to get something that large printed up.

The same question like Ray, what does it cost to prototype such a big part. What about the strength of the material?
