Title: Civilian Conversions of Military Vehicles
Post by: marc_reusser on November 16, 2011, 10:13:57 PM
Thought I'd start a reference/photo and resources discussion/thread on this since Gordon is doing such a build, kit manufacturers are bringing out more and more vehicles in 1/48,  and it may have interest for those doing modern day industrial type operations, those that simply want something different to build.

This one is on Cyprus.

Here is a 1/48 Tatra from Hauler, that with sliht modifications, could be likely used in European, African, South American, Cuban, etc...

Well as I seem to have some tenuous link to this thread, have a look at this link ( sorry Nick seem to have jumped the que, as I followed your lead)

http://paulanderson.pikfu.net/set1786798/

not all military conversions but the first 2  are ex British army and further down there are Scammells, Fodens & American Diamond T  conversions into civilian heavy haulage.

If you go back to the home page you will see there is a whole list of North West England Transport companies most of which started up with ex military vehicles

Just to bring it all back to the first photo and if you want to build in 1/24

http://www.wespemodels.ro/index.php?route=product/product&path=59_62&product_id=104

Worth looking at the rest of their site as there are some bargains/unusual vehicles listed

I've mentioned these books before , but you obviously all need reminding . Frituur Zorro volumes 1 and 2 are solely devoted to military vehicles converted to civilian use .
The picture I've included is my favourite from volume 2 , and is an Allis Chalmers M4 High Speed Tractor converted to a pipe layer .It has been added to my list of possible projects .

If you like Canadian Military Pattern Fords and Chevrolets this site has got loads , www.oldcmp.net . Mostly cranes .

For those that do 1/48 and don't want to undertake one of Gordons grueling fantastical scratch builds,...yet want a steam roller....

(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.belcherbits.com%2Fimages%2Fbattalion%2Fbt12web.jpg&hash=a631b103a03c7035d618a14676a64a4f7adec7a8)

This resin model would make a good start platform. Its from a company called Belcher Bits, and is patterned after one captured from the Japanese on Guadalcanal. Price runs around $30.

I don't have any digital pics, but they used Sherman tank chassis for logging in some places.

I've heard of fishing with grenades ... but shooting down trees with a tank seems a bit lazy!  :D

Pages 8,9 &10  Issue 17 of the Timber Times is all about logging with Shermans .

Anyway , if they were Americans shooting at the trees , they would miss ! Ha , ha .

Maybe lazy, but what a blast! ;D

A friend found one in the Northwest with a folded spar pole on top-he called it a logging howitzer.

I have a certain penchant for the Russian made Zis-5 and modeled them in a few dozen configurations. This one pressed into civilian rail service in Spain. And the Deuce and 1/2 below saw a few torches.

Chuck check this old thread out, http://www.finescalerr.com/smf/index.php?topic=593.15 page 2 shows some examples of logging equipment build on Sherman tank bases.
There was a show on history channel called axemen that featured a Yarder made from a Sherman as well, just can't find an pic right away. Pat
