I have no idea how this performs compared to 3D printing.

suppose 'Inexpensive' is relative .. as the article says that the price is 'hovering' around $997
Note that while Tom“s Guide describes it as a 3D printer, the video shows that it really a milling machine in miniature. I guess that, like the first 3D printers (or the first digital cameras..) this is most interesting as an example of what might become useful in the future - provided the manufacturers can find an early "nursing market" which shows that there is interest out there..
