Title: 1914 Leyland mobile workshop
Post by: Barney on October 26, 2011, 01:11:30 PM
A few photos of my latest project in 1/24 scale - showing the main chassis -gearbox and axle -the metal pulley at the top of the gearbox is for the generator in the workshop for driving the machines it will have 2 fan belts to the generator.chassis side rails are Evergreen channel -Front axle from a Mac truck kit - Acrylic rod was used for the axle unit rear brake drums and transmission brake - nuts/bolts are from the Grandt Line and Lion Roar range - springs are separate leaves made from Evergreen strip - next job detail the chassis - fit axle and gear box.

This work, too, is satisfactory.

Lines across a photo are a jpeg corruption. It may happen on your computer or it may occur when you post the image, possibly because your Internet server is incompetent.

:o wow, that's some very nice scratch work. Been ages since I've done an all out scratchbuilt model...this might be the motivator I need to get off my butt. Question, the nuts and bolts look fantastic, who makes them and what size are they. I'll be needing LOTS of those for my next project.

Sorry for the delay in answering the question - Nuts / bolts are Brass ones from Scale Hardware -Plastic ones are Grandt Line and Photo Etch ones from Lion Roar.

Thanks Barney. Gonna have to get me some of those plastic storage boxes, the ones with small divided compartments, to store all the NBW and Rivets i'll be buying  ;D
Looking forward to see the next round of pics on this one.

A good source for small plastic storage bins are at the Pharmacy. They sell little plastic boxes for storing pills .. each compartment for a day of the week. Cheap and work great.

Good to know, thank you. I also checked some out at Ikea and the dollar store. Once I get some time I'm going to start taking apart old broken vcr's and such for goodies to use on some scratch project and machinery. I've learned quite a bit in the last few days going over some of the threads here. Alrady made a shopping list of "to get" items.

Been doing a bit on the chassis -slow progress but getting there - steering gear / gear levers /hand brake to complete next and a little bit of refining to do in some areas made two attempts with the steering column but unhappy with the resaults as you all know it happens now and again !

This is looking great! 1:24 scale is a good scale for this type of project. It's nice to see a complete brake system. What are you using for a plan?

Gordon - the Plans I worked to for the chassis are the standard War Department Subsidy truck dimensions these I have used as a guide and modified the chassis to fit the optional gear box and axle as offered for Civilian use -the model being of this type a civilian vehicle converted for War Department use.
Dallas - So far 3 Lego Blocks have been used -the gearbox - the red tool box on the running Board and the Fascia panel (which is more like a wooden box on these vehicles)

Title: Re: 1914 Leyland mobile workshop
Post by: Barney on March 02, 2012, 07:16:36 AM
Curb – Photos of the prototype of this vehicle are rare I only know of one poor quality photo of the larger workshop body fitted to a Crossely truck chassis – there is a photo available on the net of a workshop body at the Imperial War Museum- this being purpose built body for the War Department- the only information I have on my project is that the original truck built in 1914 for the Waring & Gillow furniture company and was a wooden body fitted to a longer chassis( possibly a modified coach chassis ) in 1916 it was commissioned by the War Department under the war subsidy act – the body work was modified and refitted as a workshop following plans laid down by the War Department - examples can be found from the Gloucester Carriage Company a company known for its narrow gauge railway
workshops- an excellent article can be found in Narrow Gauge & Industrial Review magazine on these workshops the transmission was also modified so a power take off could be fitted to drive a generator for the workshop equipment possibly supplied by Tilling Stevens who were a company well advanced at the time in Petrol/electric vehicles and generators.
Research into these types of vehicles can be confusing especially when a civilian vehicle has been modified for W D use they were all different and options in wheels/transmissions/engines/bodywork were subsequently used it was a matter of what was available at the time- enclosed a few photos of types of body work fitted to these vehicles.
Just a thought who's Gordon I'm Barney  !!

AWESOME!
I LOVE, Love, love the engine stand!
Only the guys here would do/appreciate that effort!
Even down to the polished steel on the wheels!

How did you do the curved sprockets on the crank pulley????

I'm going with Marty on this one - simply Brill'!

Loving the engine stand too - smashing little detail, and probably the only bit of the entire project that I could emulate.

Most excellent.

Thats turned out really well Barney ................. mind you it should considering the work you have put into to it .

The little touches of colour and the ? decal/etched plates really bring it to life .

I too really appreciate the engine dolley, much better than my odd pair of tweezers  ;)

Marty, guessing but that pulley looks really like one of Dave's (Vectorcut) bits

Wow, excellent scratch work! I'm amazed as I look back at how that motor started out, just bits and pieces. Really inpressive.

Fantastic job on the engine  :o! This truck would have looked so good parked next to Oscar´s work shop but unfortunatley it´s not the right scale. Hope to see it "live" at Euromilitaire in the fall.
