Title: Shrimp boats 1/48
Post by: Chris on March 10, 2011, 08:35:27 AM
Hi there
so here's the construction of two shrimp boats for my project in 1/48

I start from a personnal drawing that I made during a trip in Flotrida West coast and from some experiences in HO :-\
In fact it's only two waterline hull

Great photos.

Working waterfronts and crowded fishing boats has always been on of my favorite parts of the hobby.

My vacations always take me to waterfront areas as opposed to deserts or mountains.

In 1966, I spent a year in Biloxi Mississippi which is right in the middle of the shrimp fishing industry in the Gulf of Mexico.

But I was poor and did not have a car so I could not take advantage of the situation and go exploring.

There is a couple of books by "Harold "Dynamite" Payson" on building boats using your methods.  Boat Modeling the Easy Way is one of them.

Keep us posted on your progress.

What's the deal with the deck! is that somthing you buy? or did you laminate all that up? becasue its very cool! it really makes the model, great job

That's interesting Darryl ;)
I really would like to see that in 1966 but I was born in 71 to young :-\
I have some pics found on NOAA and some online library during the seventies & eighties period in shrimp industry
also I went to Apalachicola and Fort Myers taking pictures for this project, in fact I want to build a small harbor in 48
I start with some HO trawlers since the film with Tom Hanks appears in France. I can not explain why I love this kind of trawlers but I found they have a lot of characters
with regard to the models we have in Boulogne or Concarneau (french's fishing harbors)

The model is stratchbuilt length: 8'' (20 cm) witdth: 2.5'' (6 cm) winch, exhaust, and other parts are handmade
Sailors came from Preiser ref: 10353 "Ships Crewmen" The trawl was made with a fishtnet stocking (thanks my love  :-*  )

Superb Chris. It certainly appears that your vessels are as thoughtfully well done as your machinery. The rigging has always kept me from attempting a trawler in full regalia. Don't know if this helps. I also have some photos of otter boards used on shrimping trawlers here on the coast of Maine.

Thanks Chester I've got this pic and help me so much
the system is basically the same for shrimp boat
but I will posts pics of the construction of masts
I've made it in brass with light (projector & navigation lights)

Anders In the future I'll make e thread on our layout because in fact it's a group of 4 persons located near Paris
but since a few weeks we lose the place so it's coming to my place now it's an O scale layout build for switching  13 meters long in standard gauge !

So the mast were built in brass with the first configuration for smallest trawler with a single mast
the main difficulty was to made the structure of each "beam"  :-\
but it looks ok at this point

Marc the MRS layout will be in show in Paris (gennevilliers in May) maybe his last expo :'( but I'm gonna make a thread on it ;)
here's a link during the Adliswill show http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Hm_pe3JcWI&feature=player_embedded (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Hm_pe3JcWI&feature=player_embedded)

The Trawlers will be on an O scale diorama of 6 feet long West Coast Florida theme during the seventies with a short line deserving shrimp industries with mechanical reefer,
so it's different, I hope that it'll be in show in Switzerland Adliswill 2012 not sure at the moment !!!

Some progress on N° 2 maybe I will call her Lucky Lady  ;D

The new photos above provide a good opportunity for a constructive suggestion about weathering your unpainted shrimp boats:

Look at the area around the bow, in the photos you just posted, where the anchor chain emerges. The coloration there (as in other places) seems, to my eye, too strong and looks like weathering powder on paint. (Actually, there would be chipped paint and rust there, too.) You can find the same effect on some other areas of that boat. Maybe a dilute overspray of paint would blend the strong coloration into the rest of the model. Just that one extra step would tone down the apparent overstatement.

Sometimes cameras exaggerate the contrast of our weathering so the model may look considerably better in person. Either way, I hope my comment will be a positive influence on the way you approach the boats under construction.

Hi Chris,

I was refering to the new diorama, any preview on the West Coast diorama?  ;)

As for the MRS, I feel lucky to have seen it a few years ago during an exhibition in Holland and spend my share of time in front it. I can only hope you can share some info on the layout and am sure the guys here will like what they see !! Highly recommended !

Russ

That's right in fact it was an HO scale model that I made a few years ago now, and I've not a really good experience about weathering technics  :-\
this rust is too dark I think, & with an overspray and some wash I can obtain better results

This is some absolutely beautiful scratchbuilding work...and just stunning brass work.  :o

Very depressing though...I now need to throw away my ship models :-\ :'(

Ok soon at the end  :P
so here's Lucky Lady and Goin' South
but's there's a lot to do: fishing material and nets , ropes marks & number also a bit of weathering
tires on sides etc...

As small boats are one of my things, these are superb.

Admit I was a bit worried about the deck planking early on but its turned out just about perfect. As you say a bit of clutter will finish them nicely, and I admire the subtle amount of weathering you have done.

Thanks Anders :)
In my opinion if you have a boat with rusty parts everywhere with paint chipping,
holes between planks, don't sail on it ;D
from what I saw in Florida many are in really good conditions
The main operations to maintain a wood hull for sailing is "caulking"
i'm not sure of the term in english but here's a video of this kind of work!!!

thanks Jerry

making a kit is not really the problem
the price is the real problem for this kind of boat with all the details in the box
how many modelers do you think, want to buy a shrimp boat in 1/4 scale
and only waterline model ???
If you check the web on model boat stores also forums on naval modeling
many kits are sailing model with motors etc... in big scale
others scratchbuilt specific models
In fact a few are shrimp boats
only Lindberg in S scale  ::) made a shrimp trawler in plastic
I think it's too specific, many people prefer to have the titanic or USS Constitution ;D
The two companies who made something different are Dumas & Deans Marine
they produced beautiful kits: tug boats, cargos, tow boats etc... that could fit on HO diorama or layouts also in O scale
Thanks to them for their works
I kwow other companies in England and other country but nothing in 1/4' scale

Cabin cruiser for my naval shipyard now  ::)
I received my MP15 for the dio also, we tested it on the MRS layout, the sound is fantastic, DCC technology is always in progress
the difficulty is to find time for this big project  ;D

Nothing wrong with those boats at all. In fact, I would like to feature them in a future Modelers' Annual, one I plan to do in a couple of years when advertising becomes unnecessary. -- Russ
