It's the US Wonderfest and it's in May. It's a huge sci-fi modeling convention in Kentucky each year. Have I ever gone though? Nope. I sux. It's not even that far, but I would need to get a hotel room and whatnot.

Paul: You mean LucaZ's Schnabelgun kit?
Would paint really chip like that on something that's supposed to be pretty big? I mean, I don't think you'd really see visible chips, as at that scale, you're talking paint chips four or five feet across at least flaking off.
Bexley - I think in this scale those are actually asteroid dings... or ill placed satellite impact scrapes... have you seen Galaxy Quest? Think of the their take on the classic "ooh - look at the pretty starship" scene where he scrapes it against the docking bay for about 75 meters :)
Fitch - yes - exactly... (his work is still some of my favorite organic meets mech) but I'm waiting for your interpretation - with that touch of the Jules Verne that I see in the Fish Sub ;D BTW, is the second edition of the sub still available?
Bexley: You should see the chips on the Studio Model used for filming. All the SW ships are pretty dinged up. It's part of the appeal.
Paul: Never considered Steampunking it... hrmmm. :)
One of the neat things about the original Star Wars was the weathering.
I've seen the studio model, in person. And I thought the same thing. I would imagine anything a starship might encounter that's big enough to scrape off a 10' x 10' section of paint is going to do a little more than scratch the paint. "Space dust" or small debris might account for paint wear, but it just seems to me that the wear would appear softer, since the chips would be small, but viewed from a greater (scale) distance.
Of course, there's nothing wrong with matching the studio paint job, especially on a commission. I'm doing a similarly-scaled commission of an EVE Online freighter, but with no "studio" job to match. My first thought was to weather it like anything else, but since much of the paint wear on vehicles comes from use, it likely wouldn't be visible to the naked eye.

The thing about sci fi models is, one is free to conceive of a scenario to explain nearly any feature-- short of bad craftsmanship. I find the unlikely "scenario explanations" annoying in prototype scale modelling, because they generally boil down to excuses for flaws. But somehow these explanations don't bother me with sci fi where anything goes.
The hard core rivet counter can still take a prototype scale model route and consider the model a model of the studio model and legitimately copy their questionable features. So, either way, the big paint chips are "authentic" if not entirely realistic.
I really like the early Star Wars studio miniatures, these models are gems of miniature weathering.

Well, my take, as usual with the Star Wars stuff is to copy the filming models for the basic paint schemes, but chips and overall finishing I use my own style. The chips are something that depending on the amount, I either replicate or approximate. Usually the approximation is fine and no one notices or cares as long as the finished kit looks good.
Check out my unfinished (in the sense I need to paint the figs) snowspeeders and my 99.9% finished A-Wing (and more) for how I intend to finish this. I like to do some color modulation and highlights with oils to make parts pop and add depth without resorting to the oft-used (and poorly at that) thick wash. Filtering random panels in blues or sienna helps as well.

Forgot to mention that as I'm doing this kit OOB as a sales table display (and a commission to a separate guy) I have to do it OOB. So no digging out the cockpit for porn sadly. Although I think the decal supplied may have that represented. ;)
Wait, the kit actually comes with a centerfold decal? That is so full of win that even Charlie Sheen is impressed.
Not a specific nude decal... the window decal has something in the print that looks as if it could be that. :D It's only about 1mm wide so hard to make out. :D

I'm onto the 1/72 Falcon next. Can't wait to start panel weathering that beastie! I'm going a commission for a Death Star II internal attack diorama. Should be about 7 feet in length and have the Falcon, A-Wing, X-Wing, Y-Wing, and two Tie Fighters and a Tie Interceptor or two. HUGE! Just need to find a cheap source for a mass of styrene trusses.
Looks like a real one to me.
