Junk!

I just released  this sheet of HO scale car junk, and now I'm designing my next set of junk.   It will be steam locomotive related junk, like you might see in a heap behind a roundhouse.   So I'm requesting ideas and information on what to include.   The trick is, it has to be easily do-able from flat material, as you can see in the photo, its all made up of flat parts.   

To make it interesting, and just for fun, I'll send a free set of the completed parts set to the first ten people who post an idea (with pics, please) that I put to use in the finished product.  Should any not want the freebie, I'll offer it to the 11th and so on.   

I already have pushrods!

Well, that's all my patience or attention span will allow for the moment ... ... really like what you've done with the vehicle junk ... suspect it would sell just as well or better in O scale.  Suspect it would hardly/barely sell at all in 1/35, but I might ask you about that anyway!

Valve head covers/steam chest lids.
Items that could be layered to make a more 3-d item.
Donkey boiler door (easily curved).
connecting rod?
grate/covers
plates? (i.e. dinner)
ragged piece of sheet metal (flame cut edge)
coupler buffer plate
log bunk (assembled from flat cuts?)
Angle supports, that could be folded after cutting and additional supports added. with mounting holes.
side brace pieces (just angled parts with holes)
Diagonal bracing, kinda like a triangle support with a cut out.

Any thoughts of doing the HO "Junk" above in O?.....

my want list....

O-scale bucking/falling & big circular saw blades and more small gear sets/w old time offset spokes that mesh together.
Always need gears to transfer power.

O-scale chain and sprockets..even if assembly is needed. nothing out there except Grandt line or direct from? (name eludes me)

Recently received the junk assortment along with several other great looking sprues (choice of words?) I must say that I find the detail surpasses most photo etched pieces in the scale. Congrats and a big thank you Dave.

Thanks Chester, good to have your seal of approval, you're the king of 1/87 cars.  The extra thickness I can cut with the laser is sometimes an advantage over photo etching, so I try to take advantage of that.   

Thanks guys also for the ideas on RR flat scrap.  I've got enough to move ahead on this project, but always looking for more!

I've been wanting some time to do something, anything with the laser cut pieces from Dave all week and have just been putzing around mostly. The door was covered in Bare Metal Foil and punched through from the back. The placement and amount of damage isn't good but I think the technique shows promise.

Interesting idea about the rusted through door using the foil.  I don't think it worked out the way you intended, but it does give me a really cool idea for the Old Car Junk vol. 2.  I might be able laser-engrave some rusted through spots in the doors.  Seems they are most often on the bottom where water accumulates inside.  Need to take a close look at the redneck neighbor's cars when I'm out walking the dog.      Thanks for the idea!

Yes Dave I was thinking the same thing.
Normally the door skin is pinched/folded(welded) around the edges of the frame.
A lot of older cars use wood for the framework as well.
Water accumulates in this area and rusts out the bottom.

Chester I think the technique is very promising, just need to relocate the damage.

Wasn't sure where to put this, but it sorta fits in here.  Decided to try airbrush-style headlight reflections without an airbrush on this little O scale radiator casting.  On a 19" monitor, the little tiny inset at lower right is about actual size ... kinda gives a nice little pearlescent look at normal viewing distance.  (Hold yer hand over the big one and look at the little one to see what I mean.)

Will let the paint dry and go over it with some Micro-Scale Kristal Kleer.  Did this a bit quickly with a crappy brush, but think it could work extremely well with the proper care.

For round headlights, I really like the small round silver "jewels" sold at craft stores.  They are small clear or colored plastic domes (not faceted) with a reflective backing.  They have an adhesive on the reverse and come in a variety of diameters and colors. Some are small enough for HO brake lights.   They cost almost nothing per piece.   

I used one on this HO scale Jordan model.  It was too domed for this application, after the photo, I filed it down and buffed it back to a shine.   Added weeds around the car, too.
