Title: 1/35 Ga Long Bien Vietnamese Diorama
Post by: shitao on January 27, 2019, 01:29:52 AM
Hello everybody

A quick intriduction to myself: My name is Thomas and I am living in Switzerland. I already know some of the guys here in this forum.
I am very happy to post from now on some of my things here.  I hope you will enjoy my way of modelling.
And please forgive my poor english skills...

I am currently working on a small diorama with an asian background.
Here the overall view:

(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fbahnmodellbau.ch%2Fforumbilder%2Ffinescalerr%2Fasienanlage%2F001_total.jpg&hash=af96f79b61f7414918202f5ea5dcb3bcebe4e857)

There will be a small train passing through the secenes. In the future I hope to add more modules. But first I have to finish this...

The last thing I did is adding a small bridge on the right side of the diorama.
This helps me to hide the opening for the train to leave the diorama.

I had to build a form. To give additional strength an stability I also added some brass profiles which I soldered together. Much like in the real world.
Hey: I am an architect..so this had to be.. ;)

(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fbahnmodellbau.ch%2Fforumbilder%2Ffinescalerr%2Fasienanlage%2F002_bruecke.jpg&hash=9311a277817f5bc964eea1cb65ee1744a6324abb)

After pouring the plaster and dismantling one can see that the bridge has quite a beautiful texture:

(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fbahnmodellbau.ch%2Fforumbilder%2Ffinescalerr%2Fasienanlage%2F003_bruecke_seite.jpg&hash=91e8705f0c4a9f0a0349e6b96839b5980a54b1f6)

For the street I used cork as the base layer:

(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fbahnmodellbau.ch%2Fforumbilder%2Ffinescalerr%2Fasienanlage%2F004_strasse_kork.jpg&hash=3c922c08286ba7c818e847448bee7984c31b694d)

To fill the cracks I poured very fine sand into the cracks:

(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fbahnmodellbau.ch%2Fforumbilder%2Ffinescalerr%2Fasienanlage%2F005_strasse_sand.jpg&hash=a09139057f511817996ff0df30d2f475be2563bc)

Now I am on the way to ad the railing:

(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fbahnmodellbau.ch%2Fforumbilder%2Ffinescalerr%2Fasienanlage%2F006_bruecke_gelaender.jpg&hash=73551aecc51775384732bf8c7b483268ea8106f0)

The decaying concrete has a nice texture.  A bit of rust till accent the rebar and add to the decay.  I also love the use of cork for the road surface as its texture makes for a great start to a road.  Keep the updates and ideas coming.  Welcome aboard.

Hello everybody

I am slowly moving forward.
Here the progress.

View over the whole scene with truck:

(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fbahnmodellbau.ch%2Fforumbilder%2Ffinescalerr%2Fasienanlage%2F007_bruecke.jpg&hash=0e3f18a8cc7342415da6d334d6d50fe1ea19e07f)

The truck will be further loaded with more stuff.
I found a really good source of inspirations here:

https://www.boredpanda.com/the-most-overloaded-vehicles-of-all-times/?utm_source=google&utm_medium=organic&utm_campaign=organic

And a closer shot of the detailing:

(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fbahnmodellbau.ch%2Fforumbilder%2Ffinescalerr%2Fasienanlage%2F008_bruecke.jpg&hash=28d397e142abddcf813011be3c7521a36d96d406)

Altogether I am quite satisfied.

Of course I am now curious to read your comments and suggestions!

Good evening

Not much time to really build something new...
Small progress here and there

The first tourists did arrive:
(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fbahnmodellbau.ch%2Fforumbilder%2Ffinescalerr%2Fasienanlage%2F009_bar.jpg&hash=ed06c086059290c74817cc7670d86651e5242be3)

First try to get the lorry at the right position and to see how it could look overloaded:
(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fbahnmodellbau.ch%2Fforumbilder%2Ffinescalerr%2Fasienanlage%2F010_lkw.jpg&hash=d1725aa2152a60978f84e9c88c17519cc8d4ab12)

The right side of the diorama:

And the view of one of the boats:

Coming along nicely.

Dressing the guy in the red hat in Olive Drab utilities will give many of the older members of this forum flashbacks.  ;D ;D

I wish I could find my picture of a scooter going to market with chickens, ducks, sugar cane, other merchandise, Mama San, the kids, and a water buffalo on board.  It was a vehicle very much like John Deere's Gator.

The German building on the flat bed doesn't count because it is a commercial move.  The rest would get you arrested in most western countries.

Post by: shitao on February 10, 2019, 01:52:56 AM
Thank you!
Would be great to have this picture of the scooter!

To get some animation on my diorama I decided to motorize two small scenes.

A man sitting in his chair:

(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fbahnmodellbau.ch%2Fforumbilder%2Ffinescalerr%2Fasienanlage%2F015_schaukelstuhl.jpg&hash=efd2bff32bf774a4c7830c6c12f33d711a089135)

And the video to proove..

http://bahnmodellbau.ch/forumbilder/finescalerr/asienanlage/016_schaukelstuhl.mov (http://bahnmodellbau.ch/forumbilder/finescalerr/asienanlage/016_schaukelstuhl.mov)

And a boy pumping water:

A video, too...:

Hello Thomas,

very nice and successful, do you also control the drives via the OC32?
Even a recent video of the train would certainly be good to watch.

Hello
I am really happy that you appriciate my work.
Thanks a lot ! I sure will post more of my things in the future.

@ Helmut: I don't use the OC32 to control those two motors (yet). I simply use a separate 3V source.
No electronique... just simply + and -....
But I plan to integrate those motors, too.

Too much ideas...too less time...

Good evening

I like detailing all the little things:

The river has a lot of garbage. Unfortunately this is like in the real world:

(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fbahnmodellbau.ch%2Fforumbilder%2Ffinescalerr%2Fasienanlage%2F017_fluss.jpg&hash=1a243f979876eaaa21e69acee7caa1e1e386d7f6)

And there is some food for the rats, too:

(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fbahnmodellbau.ch%2Fforumbilder%2Ffinescalerr%2Fasienanlage%2F018_ufer.jpg&hash=28d6502fe6144817935a9fa1c8fed2ac1ffd39e2)

And finally a hungry little boy starring at the fish:

(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fbahnmodellbau.ch%2Fforumbilder%2Ffinescalerr%2Fasienanlage%2F019_fisch.jpg&hash=c7c60b094569b30ea8cb9296ff7f0e5c5509993d)

The detail shots truly show off your talent so please post more. Very artistic use of subtle color and texture. I would have to look very carefully at higher resolution images to find anything to criticize. -- Russ

Well here we go!

The first tourist is coming!

The hotel seems still to have a room with a view to the river
(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fbahnmodellbau.ch%2Fforumbilder%2Ffinescalerr%2Fasienanlage%2F021_hotel.jpg&hash=fd24278b33cc1ff0e727cc03eb076ba7c192a482)

Hello Ray
Thank You.
The railing is a leftover from a plastic kit of a tramway.
It was intended to use for the base.

Good evening

Back from Luxembourg. The very first time I could show my work to the public.
I am really happy about all the (mostly) positive reactions from everybody.

A good friend of mine did even made a video:  https://vimeo.com/321306561
Please enjoy!

Then a picture from the whole arrangement:

(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fbahnmodellbau.ch%2Fforumbilder%2Ffinescalerr%2Fasienanlage%2F023_alles.jpg&hash=9814c817dea77a5ed2ab64fa82f5c9abc82e0a88)

Had big discussions if it would be better to have the wall around the layout in black.
What do you suggest?

And then my favorite snapshot:

A simple and very clean display.

If you have one of those mini potpourri pots you could heat a small amount of chicken stock and herbs to give another dimension to the display and truly give the aroma of an Asian market.

HI Thomas,

Congratulations again on the successful diorama. I
t's true the video is very revealing and made very nice.

At my monastic tunnel I used black now but could not say what looks better.
I would get black paper and cover that white with it then you can decide very well what looks better.
However, I would suggest old weathered boards such as the insight into a market bud.

Good morning

Time is rushing by...

Nevertheless I am adding small things here and there to my diorama.

There was a picture of an waterbuffallo..I just could not resist to make my version of it:

(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fbahnmodellbau.ch%2Fforumbilder%2Ffinescalerr%2Fasienanlage%2F025_karren.jpg&hash=47a791a599d5526b8986936315de7f1e7c53a37b)

And added to my bridge:

Nicely done.  Its the little things which sometimes inspire all of us to do great models.  The recycling of the military trailer by the farmer is a great touch.  If you made a base representing a dirt/muddy trail the water buffalo could become its own mini diorama.

Thanks for your comments!

While browsing the internet I came across a really remarkable railcar from the myanmar railways.

(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fbahnmodellbau.ch%2Fforumbilder%2Ffinescalerr%2Fasienanlage%2F027_railcar.jpg&hash=5dd0e1bf7e89eb534e19002b93a07725faa6ee46)

Credit: foto by Florian Grupp, 2010.

One can clearly discover that the railcar is actually driven by tires.
So the steel wheels just guide the car on the rails.
A really very interesting way!

Mabe one of you knows more about this car?
I do know that the french tested a similar railcar from the company Michelin.

Hello everybody

Some progres to show.
I am on the way to draw a plan for a reproduction of the railcar. Have to buy some plasticard, too.

In the meantime I am working on a tree. Base is a branch from the garden. The leaves are my own lasercut leaves.

(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fbahnmodellbau.ch%2Fforumbilder%2Ffinescalerr%2Fasienanlage%2F030_baum.jpg&hash=8786c69c54b18443aaaa2f8202960b7de9473886)

I also added some motorbikes to make the street a little bit more asian style crowded.

Hello Russ and Chuck

Thanks for your kind comments!

I am continuing with the shell of the railcar.
A lot of sanding...:

(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fbahnmodellbau.ch%2Fforumbilder%2Ffinescalerr%2Fasienanlage%2F032_triebwagen.jpg&hash=5d2c8124daf65799270927a33dd4ac4cba010984)

I could get some informations about the car from Florian Grupp.
He shows us some fotos here:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/12906273@N05/albums/72157628970599049/page3

And som more informations (in german) here:

https://www.drehscheibe-online.de/foren/read.php?017,8883540

The railcars themselfes are completely low budget builds made by the myanmar railways.
They are based on a chassis from old HINO lorries.
There are no plans available as they built the railcars just from everything the could gather..

Easterweekend gave me a little time to heat the lasercutter from the office I am working.
So I sketched an easy-to-build-kit for the seats:

Thats why I finally added the last small animated part of my diorama: the moving station doors.

Hello

Back from the exhibition. Everything worked fine. The public enjoyed my little dreamworld. I am really happy!

The next step is to add the other railbus.
Made some progress and could motorise it:

Glad to hear your exhibition went well. Everything looks good in photos, so it must have looked even better in person.

Somehow i didn't see much of what you posted on page 3 until today. I like your laser cut leaves. Can you tell me what they are cut out of and what their actual size is? I work in HO and wonder if similar patterns can be successfully laser cut at that scale?

Hello

See attached a foto of my leaves:

(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fbahnmodellbau.ch%2Fforumbilder%2Ffinescalerr%2Fasienanlage%2F037_blatt.jpg&hash=4d594e9abfbea7c7aaf8ef4d4176ea527079c011)

It is measured in cm.
They are cut out of paper. It is a size of A4 (21.0 x 29.7 cm), 160 g/m2.
Normal paper is 80 g/m2.

Hello

I could test the loco. She makes the really narrow curve on my layout...
So I can now continue to complete the railcar.

The seats are installed:

(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fbahnmodellbau.ch%2Fforumbilder%2Ffinescalerr%2Fasienanlage%2F039_triebwagen.jpg&hash=cffbe0ef7785c55dd59454f63dd81e36d0dd8d39)

And I also added a luggage net on the roof. This is not prototypical...but it looks well...

(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fbahnmodellbau.ch%2Fforumbilder%2Ffinescalerr%2Fasienanlage%2F038_triebwagen.jpg&hash=e9fe6275691d79d1b9c0343ad6ccb96f52083f2f)

Hello

Finally got some spare time to continue with my railcar  :D

I installed my stuff on the eating table:

(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fbahnmodellbau.ch%2Fforumbilder%2Ffinescalerr%2Fasienanlage%2F040_arbeitsplatz.jpg&hash=53ae5fbffaa72293e1614e2d1594f019444710c3)

First I made a layer from rusty color as the base. Followed with two layers of chipping fluid:

(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fbahnmodellbau.ch%2Fforumbilder%2Ffinescalerr%2Fasienanlage%2F041_grundiert.jpg&hash=c7c9fb231b04ab99ecb9eb08a6b274491e56b159)

Followed by chipping the covering color:

(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fbahnmodellbau.ch%2Fforumbilder%2Ffinescalerr%2Fasienanlage%2F042_chipping.jpg&hash=e17faf06127dd9b54c39c1d965e3b08da8fec637)

To make a faded look I added white and yellow oils:

(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fbahnmodellbau.ch%2Fforumbilder%2Ffinescalerr%2Fasienanlage%2F043_ol_getupft.jpg&hash=58fe5cb37aeb9a460e9197e790d240e6c78a26de)

I brushed the whole thing with white spirit. And finally did the irregular pattern with a little sponge:

(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fbahnmodellbau.ch%2Fforumbilder%2Ffinescalerr%2Fasienanlage%2F044_fade.jpg&hash=9dda17f8147445cd560eaae5196f5d6bea83e4b3)

Pretty much the same procedure at the roof. I added some more acrylic color to do the rust effects:

(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fbahnmodellbau.ch%2Fforumbilder%2Ffinescalerr%2Fasienanlage%2F045_dach.jpg&hash=e6fccb3f1c2da5e0641c4e0f121bce0275b29252)

To be continuid...

Hello

I am approching the end..

Weathering of the windows:

(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fbahnmodellbau.ch%2Fforumbilder%2Ffinescalerr%2Fasienanlage%2F046_fenster.jpg&hash=f9871e178fc3654850a61286e1c90a8a1be21667)

First test on the layout:

(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fbahnmodellbau.ch%2Fforumbilder%2Ffinescalerr%2Fasienanlage%2F047_front.jpg&hash=ed649d21e886719ca73e86ae06f6c4c260f52c71)

I want to add some stuff on the roof. And of course I need some passengers, too.
There is still a lot of small weathering to do.

Hi Thomas.
You have captured the chaos of Asia really well .love the rail line going through the street scene. Before you asked about the colour of the surrounds of your scene -either black or white the general colour used is black it seems to draw your eye more into the scene.

Hi Kim
Thank you for your comment. I was not sure if I should use black or white. Finally I am happy with my choice of the light grey.
It doesn't have the big contrast. For me this works Vetter.
And thanks for your Kind words : I really appriciate your work very much, too !

Hi everybody

I had this foto as my inspiration:

(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fbahnmodellbau.ch%2Fforumbilder%2Ffinescalerr%2Fasienanlage%2F049_ziegel.jpg&hash=3ef8739e004288e338c9f19941ea5eae62c0e92d)

And now I made my own version of it:

(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fbahnmodellbau.ch%2Fforumbilder%2Ffinescalerr%2Fasienanlage%2F050_ziegel.jpg&hash=4cad966da22ba21b3e804c7223e83eac73b85bac)

The bicycle is from Tamiya with some superdetailing parts.
The stones are real bricks 1:35 that Marcel Ackle gave generously to me.
Thanks a lot!

The bricks on the model are stacked slightly differently from those on the full size bike. An accurate model would precisely duplicate the "prototype". -- ssuR

Hello

I will change the tires to be compressed..
This really is a detail I missed...

I am ading more rolling stock to my small world.
I recently bought a WWII plastic car kit. Could be that this one found its way to asia somehow during the wartime.
Now the car will serve just for civilisans..

Thomas, I was very excited to see Ga Long Bien in the British magazine Continental Modeller. It is a masterpiece of unbelievably believable scenics on a simple oval layout.
I showed the magazine to the Committee of the Gauge 1 Model Railway Association, who are keen to encourage more small layouts designed to be shown to the public at Model Railway Exhibitions, just as you are doing. (G1MRA is well known for its very large ovals running expensive Live Steam express trains. But, as you have proved, Gauge 1 modelling does not have to be expensive or complex.)

Modelling trams allows both Simplicity and Economy, especially using the very cheap, yet very detailed, MiniArt kits of classic German and Russian tramcars from Ukraine. (For 1:35 models, our Gauge 1 track is close to Russian Gauge, so it all works out nicely.)

What complicates tram models is the fragile overhead power supply. And even if I build a layout with Overhead, my tram would look foolish on other layouts, without Overhead.
You have solved this problem brilliantly by using a gasoline/diesel generator trailer, just as real trams have at times of emergency.

May I ask the inspiration for your generator trailer, please?
Is it based on a real generator, or is it all from your own imagination?
And have you fitted it (or the tramcar) with Sound, please?

Thanks, David from England

Hallo David
Thanks a lot for your kind words.
The trailer is inspired from the one the Greek narrow gauge railway Diakopto to Kalavrita uses.
