Here?s a ?first draft? of the cylinder head for my 1/16th scale tractor. I?m still playing around with cast texture, something I?ve never done before in my small scale stuff. Scary stuff for me, lots of construction time at risk.

Chuck, you got me there, my friend. It really don't get any better than that.  Knowing as I do old engines, intimately, that is simply remarkable and I promise you, I'm a fussy s*d!!  I've just sprayed my full sized boat engine with its original loud colour and some clear lacquer and I do hope it doesn't end up looking like yours<g>  I also worked with a professional modelmaker when I was alledgedly learning my trade, who restored old tractors for a hobby, so I've seen some wrecks!
So, go on, if you can bear to, tell us how you did that.  I can't imagine having the time spare to experiment like you and Marc do.  My wife would kill me!

Like Hector I know old engines well too.
The color, texture and shading are spot on!
I looked at the larger pic and can only find a few indicators that it is a model.
The head bolts look "molded on" hard to tell where the washers stop and the head begins.
Some seapage under the washers would be kool.
The only other giveaway is there is no parting line between the head and coolant housing.
Some water spots might be neat too.
All in all AWESOME though!

Very nice indeed the coloring is excellent.  Hector your right that they have a lot of time to experiment, but look how much we learn from them.

Marty, I've been dissapointed in the quaility of the die cast parts. I could go back and try fixing a lot of things, but when do you stop?
The place where the inlet joins the head should indeed have some kind of seam or gasket exposure. As it came it was about .03 wide! Improved now, but not perfect.

There will be a lot of oil seepage for sure! One of my favorite things (on a model, not my garage floor!) I hope to experiment with some new methods there as well.

You have to draw the line somewhere, Chuck. To my eye, it would be counterproductive to do more to that part; it is virtually perfect. Move on to the next piece. -- Russ

Wow ...what can I say...word fail...it's near perfect. Really looking forward to seeing it once you add the grease, gunk and oil that you excel at so well.  Just beautifully done....and your process description makes it sound so easy  . I think the wet sanding really did the trick. What prompted you to try that, and why did you use the intermediate layer of Dullcoat?  Did you brush on the Bragdons dry, or did you "wash them on?

Yea buddie, that's some cool stuff, anything old/rusty and dirty is the best.  Keep[ up the good work and we'll be in touch.  I only collect crawler tractors and have a bunch of em.......!!  All dirty of course  !!!

Yes sir John, he has some neat stuff and a lot of talent to make the junk even better. As you know, mine all have tracks on em and are pretty beat up.
