A Tale of two Ks

I recently finished weathering two Bachmann K-27s. The first, slightly modified and repainted for my Tuscarora RR. The second, a straight weathering job.

Media: acrylic washes (mostly black, some brown and grey) and Bragdon's powders. Valve gear was painted with Badger's Accuflex "Dull coat." It sticks wonderfully to the Bachmann valve gear and dries a dead flat, dulling the valve gear very nicely.

I went a bit "dirtier" on the D&RGW K-27, which was accomplished merely by not wiping off quite so much of the acrylic wash.

The neat thing about using the wash is that when you do wipe it off, you get a nice, dull finish from looking straight on:


But when viewed at an angle, you get the reflective properties of the paint underneath--something you cannot do with an overspray of a matte finish.
