Title: 1:16 scale Diorama Rebuild
Post by: Scratchman on January 31, 2014, 09:16:49 AM

1:16 scale Diorama Rebuild

Instead of building a new diorama I'm going to redo my old photo back-drop with engine shed diorama. The article is in the summer 2007 Narrow gauge Annual. I will remove the shed and back section of track that are both on the right side of the diorama.

Photo shows jig holding the six pieces for the bent. The upright sides need a 45 degree angle on one end. The diagonals have two different angels I made a pattern out of 1/8" bass wood. I find the correct angle to set up the sander guide then turn over the pattern to find the other angle.

I'm building the track on a strip of mat board. One 42" long x 8" wide and one 28" long x 8" wide . Starting on the right side I laid out the bents at 8 scale feet and glued down the below grade fixtures. I will add the finished bent (with no glue) and start gluing on the rest of the parts, When all is finished the track will be removable so that ground cover can be added. The track mat board  sections will be glue down to the top surface of the dioramas framing. The track mat board will be glued to the framing before the ground cover is added.

I will continue to work on the track and layer up the framing to the correct height.

 Side Rails and Horizontal Brace-Work
The side rails and horizontal brace-work are made up out of scale 2"x6"x16'0" basswood The side rail have a 2"x6"x1' 8" joiner board at every other bent.

Top Rail Beams
The top rail beams are scale 6"x8"x16'0" basswood. I cut mine 8 foot long but I will cover the false joints with hardware.

Photo (track work and jig set up.)
A set of  jigs are use to hold the side rails and horizontal braces in place. The jig hooks over the back edge of the mat board and will stay true on all the sections. After both side rails and the horizontal braces (the braces at the bents) are added then the set of jigs can be moved to the next section. I still need to add the nail head to the side rails.

I will work on the remaining framing and start fabricating the top rail.

Mono-rail Slide-in 1:16 Scale Diorama.
Good to be back on this project  I'm leaving the diorama alone, and only building the mono-rail slide-in. The track with fence in the background and a  road in the foreground.

Here's a Photo :showing my progress. I Glued and Stapled the track base to the slide-ins base, And made a mock-up for the fences. I got the top iron rail bolted on the track works top rail. The track work still needs 22 X-supports.

Here's two Photos of the slide-in. The other two slide-ins the (two foot gauge) and the (three foot gauge) only has one layer for models to set. The mono-rail  slide-in has the track and a road parallel to the track. I have painted the fence frame and added the 22X-supports.

So you have three different track types that can "slide in" to the diorama, depending on what equipment you want to display, correct?

Thanks guys for your comments. Here's two test photos of the slide-in with one of the locos on the track. For the fence 1/2" scale corrugated paper stock from Simpson. Painted Floquil Box Car Red, over that I dabbed on some liquid mask, and painted Scalecoat White. I also did the dab and painted Scalecoat White over the end to end roof at the top of the diorama. The wood fence still needs more paint.

Ground cover

1. Apply a heavy  coat of white glue.
2. Sprinkle on a layer sand gavel mix.
3. over that goes a light application of Woodland Scenics fine and medium ballast (brown and dark brown) and fine ground foam(both soil and earth colors) Use water in a spray bottle to spray the glue area lightly. That will bring up some glue from beneath the gravel to hold everything together.
4. Finish by applying some course turf .
5. I also added dead sagebrush twigs (for trees) and real moss.
The road still needs more ballast.

Thanks guys for your comments. . Here's five photos of the repair shed interior. The sepia photos don't work as good as color photos on shots like these , but I was unable to find the color photos  I sent to Russ for the article.

Here's  photos of two small fright cars setting on the three foot gauge slide-in. The Oahu Sugar Company Cane Car and Ewa Plantation Boxcar. The Jim Dunlop's plans are in the May-June 1990 Narrow Gauge and Shortline Gazette. My artical on the two cars are in the 2009 Narrow Gauge annual.
