I recognize that last one, it's displayed with some old mining equipment in front of a motel/casino in Tonopah, NV.

This is what I plan on building for the second build of this kit:

...that will leave me with plenty of great gobbits for the scrap/parts box.  ;D

Not a chance of that happening. I have the kit on the way, so all these ref pics are a gold mine of information for me and im sure alot of others.

Modelling in sunny South Africa

Eventually will start a new thread for this but just to add to the variations for this kit this is what I am doing with it

1/24 Caterpillar Fifteen ( it might end up as a 7C Fifteen?)

Cat Fifteen

Cat Fifteen 7c

The basic running gear of the S65 is almost spot on for a 1/24 Cat 15, most the running gear is shared across the Cat 5, 10 and Twenty  so there are other options  ;) although layout does differ from model to model.

Obviously the body work will have to be scratched, and I am playing around modifying bits of the kit to see what would work and what will not .

Here is the kit radiator, Russian markings removed and narrowed by about 4 mm to get it closer to the body width of the "15"  ........... which meant that I then had to scratch a new fan shroud( an interesting little build  :))

Still need to sort out new starting handle access and the radiator filler , as well as Cat name and cast lettering, etc.

Great start on these guys and good to see Gordon back at work! Will follow along with great interest.

Don't think I haven't spotted what you're doing Gordon. Seriously - very interested, and interesting! I'll return the compliment methinks and keep an eye out for anything I can thieve.... 'erm'....be inspired by.

Keep us posted.
KBO..................... Andi.

Mr Potato Head

Forget the shroud of Turin! That's a great job on the radiator! Thanks for getting rid of the Ruski letters; I can't wait to see this thread!

Yeah...that fan shroud is the bomb-diggity.
It's amazing how carefully arranged basic shapes can turn into a superior piece of scratchbuilding.

This is turning into a terrific thread. I like the idea of watching simultaneous builds of the same kit. -- Russ

Looks like a great thread.  And by two no less.  Should be some good learning here.

HooYeah... great bits on both accounts (still a little bonked by the 11 links in 2 hours metric - a quick reminder of why most of my MK sets languish in the drawer).  I'm really glad to see the detail in the radiator (and what you've done to dress it up on the back side).  Again - with my experience with the Trumpy MGMC-16 - the radiator was completely devoid of detail, and that was in 1:16.  It looks like they have done this one up right.

Now toss in Libor's engine rusting away behind the barn...

"Did I mention this is a bad idea?"

Don't know if you've seen this (it's the first thing that comes up in a search :o) but here are some clean pics: http://svsm.org/gallery/chtz-65

Jester now known as Tim ;)

Many thanks for that second link , the Cat 10 album has absolutely fabulous detail included in those pics .......... especially in areas that are not normally photographed!

Going to put all on disc in case they disappear

Thanks again

Suggest you have a look at the second link posted by Jester, the Cat 10.

Although it has probably far too much paint on it for your tastes but its has some of the best and clearest pictures of all the wear points on the track, track rails etc that I have seen and which might prove useful to you.

You might also note the use of bolts rather than rivets on the tracks ............ sure you will happy to sand of the existing rivets and replace , 34 track shoes x 4 rivets per shoe, times two sides mmmmmmmmmmmmmm........ ::)
