Title: woolacombe layout at 7/8 th scale
Post by: franckcombe on October 02, 2012, 11:11:21 PM
After modelling 2 layouts at gn15 scale (maple shack and vulcan iron works) I switch to 7/8 th scale (or 1/12 scale, doll house scale). It's a fictional layout for fisherman located at woolacombe (north devon, uk). The size is 140 cm by 72.5 cm plus a fiddle yard not shows). The base is an hollow core door plus pink foam on it and a little plaster.

I made some progress during september : I rust the rail, put 2 layers of sand and I begin to add few plants.

Good start. I will be very interested in how you enhance it. For example, the weeds in the background still look a little artificial. Nice concept. Please keep posting. -- Russ

I'm planting the weeds. I just spent 3 hours for the weed I will add some more weed, cut it and shape it. For the moment I agree it's artificial but I will do effort to look like more natural.

That's beautiful!
Don't worry about the weeds, even though they look like hair plugs, they'll grow in  ::)

Just tell everyone that the weeds are some Boy Scout's Eagle Scout project and he planted them for erosion control.  The pattern is a lot like the grass the US Park Service and the North Carolina Department of Conservation plant each summer on the Outer Banks.  Just add a sweating Boy Scout with a stick and a bag of plants and go for a cold one. ::)

The plants grow quickly ... and now seem more natural

I agree with Russ but there is something thas has bugged me from the start.  Just figured it out.  The three braces on the corner of the wooden wall are not holding up much, at lease they don't look like it.  I had a very similar wall on some real beach propety I had.  To look right to me it should have a horizontal whaler bolted across the corners and then the braces holding them up and against the wall.

I agree with your comment. I was hesitating to do the bracing or not, but you convince me. If you have photos of true wall, you can post it like that it will look more real.

Sorry I was slow in responding but my wife has been in the hospital, she is doing fine now.I hope this helps you or at least gives you an idea.  The horizontal (A) wale (whaler) is bolted to the vertical boards every 4-6 feet.  About every eight feet should be a brace to the ground (C) with the brace bolted to the wale.  In the ground the brace should but against and be bolted to a deadman buried in the ground and running crosswise to the brace.  The deadman should be about four to six feet long or even more depending on the soil.  The deadman (D) could also b e buried vertical as in the drawing but not as strong. The drawing shown here is for temporary walls but the idea is the same.  On a tall wall it is a good idea to have a second wale lower down on the wall.

I worked hard to finish to paint 1 loco and 31 wagons. I resized also my crab shack that was a bit too small. Sorry for the poor quality of the indoor photos. There is no sun in France at the moment but I soon as It will be sunny I will do outdoor photos.

My rolling stocks are from LGB, Bacmhmann and HLW and are largely modified and/or are entirely scratch build.

During the exhibition, I  was very pleased to meet Simon HARRIS.  It was a pleasure and an honor for me that he runs his  loco and rolling stocks on my layout. He gave me also the excellent idea of the chain shunting, brilliant ! I was also impressed by his battery loco, a system that I ignore all because I'm in DCC.

I had the pleasure to meet also  Stephan, Peter and  3 - 4 others 7/8 th scale modellers (I hope the will forgave me to not be able to site them).

I'm already invite for 3 others exhibitions in UK so I hope it will be another occasion to meet others 7/8th scale modellers.

Articles will be written in British railway modelling and in narrow gauge industrial railway modelling review on the Woolacombe Bay so I hope it will contribute a little to the development of this fantastic scale.

Few photos of the layout during the exhibition with loco and rolling stock from Simon Harris

The layout looks nice, and I like Simon's little blue loco.

It will be another occasion to meet others 7/8 modellers.

For the sound, I have a decoder on board without sound plus a decoder (esu locksound) in parallel under the layout. The esu is linked to a sub woofer plus 2 satellites in order to have a punchy sound for the exhibition.

I will exhibit the 10th & 11th January 2015 at  St Albans model railway exhibition (London). Si I need to have more typical british locomotive to show. I have to paint my lister.

I have also a new project. On Rumanian narrow gauge there are plenty rail trucks or rail cars like that

(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi495.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Frr313%2Fnarrow_gauge_combe%2F1-1.jpg&hash=2477930101a796bee018d91f8b35fb2c377776a1) (http://s495.photobucket.com/user/narrow_gauge_combe/media/1-1.jpg.html)

It's plenty of atmosphere. The germans  done it also with combi VW. So I decided that I need also to have mine. I doodle between combi, austin mini, ...

But there is always prototype that exists so I did some reaserch and I found this

(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi495.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Frr313%2Fnarrow_gauge_combe%2F2-1.jpg&hash=ec7375606590211c09908bfa8e9390472a880d5d) (http://s495.photobucket.com/user/narrow_gauge_combe/media/2-1.jpg.html)

In fact Canadian national did 5 cars like that for inspection car. So if Canadians did that, I could do it  for my narrow gauge.

This is my unfinished version with HLW motor, esu decoder. I need to paint it, weather it a little, add sticker on it, a surfbord because it will be the rail car of the local surf club (Woolacombe bay is famous for surfing)

I went at Saint Alban exhibition. It was a super exhibtion. I meet few english friends like Gordon and Maggy Gravett, Christopher Payne, ... I learn a lot about to do building, forced perspective, ... I learn also how to do  herbs with Maggy Gravett herself in french !

I had the opportunity to met also 7/8th scaler.

I come with Jean-Pierre Duval, my french friend that design and built the mack 2 tons.

I meet two teenagers at the exhibitions : Jamie and Josh. They was very pleased with the layout, so I left them the throttle during the 2 days. They were very efficient and studious. For my part I love to design and built a layout but not to run it.

It's great to see younger ones involved in train operations! They are the ones responsible to keep the hobby alive.

I just come back from an exhibition in Belgium at Linter. It was a small exhibition but with an high level of layouts.

It's a rural village and one of the speciality is the beer, a drink highly appreciate by my driver. So my driver decide to promote this excellent beverage.

(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi495.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Frr313%2Fnarrow_gauge_combe%2FIMG_3676.jpg&hash=dab76acd8c4e497cef26dba1efc58e9297c68d17) (http://s495.photobucket.com/user/narrow_gauge_combe/media/IMG_3676.jpg.html)

For the fun my friend add a pelican that stolen the fishes

(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi495.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Frr313%2Fnarrow_gauge_combe%2FIMG_6599.jpg&hash=e4c0213702021f34938974b1e2717a130f7232fb) (http://s495.photobucket.com/user/narrow_gauge_combe/media/IMG_6599.jpg.html)

There is also a fight between the seagul and the pelican

(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi495.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Frr313%2Fnarrow_gauge_combe%2FIMG_6581.jpg&hash=8716f2f870fc6a5bfd7e660286f0569394715050) (http://s495.photobucket.com/user/narrow_gauge_combe/media/IMG_6581.jpg.html)

There are also 2 beautifull animals that took place in the boat

(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi495.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Frr313%2Fnarrow_gauge_combe%2FIMG_6580.jpg&hash=e743b5205347122e16aef7bf102eeef617e7de2c) (http://s495.photobucket.com/user/narrow_gauge_combe/media/IMG_6580.jpg.html)

I add also during the exhibition a seagull on the top of the house and droppings

(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi495.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Frr313%2Fnarrow_gauge_combe%2FIMG_6573.jpg&hash=06ad1a42c5782bf077be45cbdec98771f5a340c1) (http://s495.photobucket.com/user/narrow_gauge_combe/media/IMG_6573.jpg.html)

Like you can see I'm not a serious modellers and in Belgium they have a special sense of humour.

Now it's time to retire this layout. I have plan to go at 19/20/21 june Great Central Railway (Leicester UK)  but for personal reason I can't.

So I will offer this layout to my friend Jean-Pierre that help me and share with me 5 exhibitions in France and Europe.

I want to thank all the persons that participate to this topic and help me to improve the layout by their critics and supports during 2 years. It was also a great pleasure to meet them also  in flesh during the various exhibitions.

Now it's also time to finish my other layout "vestvagoy" quickly because my club will be closed at the end of June.

So i will continue model railroading but at home in my apartment. With such lack of space, I have to downsizing my next project, so I will start my new project at 009 scale with a layout located in Morocco in 1917.

Too bad about your club shutting down. Good luck with your next layout, whatever it may be.
