Title: recent modelling from KIM
Post by: 1-32 on March 25, 2020, 05:13:18 AM
Hi all a new project
Lockdown challenge 2020
Put away your knitting and remotes we are all going into isolation,  let's do a bit of modeling and baking nice bread.
I and a good friend of this site have a mutual interest in river traders of the Congo River in Nigeria this is my version of one of those in 1/35 scale based on his excellent photo reference. It is not an exact copy of a steam-powered paddle steamer it is how it want to build it. My time frame is 3 months a very big job for 3 months material -anything paint finishes well let's see .
length 200 mm width120 mm height 118 mm.
cheers Kim

I wonder if there are plans out there for the original "African Queen" boat.
That would be fun to see... and build.

Thats Nice - Have you seen Murphy's War -Peter O'Toole  some lovely old Congo style stuff with dredger type boat with thatched roof workshop on board the deck  - loads of inspiration
Myself started a out of the box kit builds - but it did not last long - backwoods logging stuff a converted Liberty truck (war surplus ) in 1/35th

Funny I have just seen Bogart in a detective story in LA great scriptwriting tough lifestyle Camel plain cigarettes and a bottle of Gin.
My little boat would have been used on lakes or slow-running rivers and would have been built up using a collection of miss-matched items like the boiler wood-fired.Cargo would have been stored on the roof or a barge attached, sleeping accommodation -hammocks.
Because of its low water line, the hull is not a feature so I will start construction with the water wheel and engine room  . The engine room area will be made in one piece and placed in position when the hull is completed.
Please remember this is my design and there will be many flaws when viewed by a professional just live with it OK.
Thanks, everybody for your comments
cheers

This is one of the best bits of inspiration I have seen in some time - just love the drawings and the ideas - sod the perfectionist and the rivet counters
if it looks feasible do it (for all you rivet counters feasible means From the Oxford Dic' abel to be done)
Or as I have always called it "Freelance Prototype modelling" The inspiration you have given me has come at a good time just getting over a long term of Burning out - so last night out came the Murphy's War Dvd and tonight its the African Queen
Thanks again for the inspiration

Cheers Barney what is the saying Everybody to there own -something like that.
The boiler?
A friend pointed out if I used a vertical boiler instead of the one in the drawing it would give me more space on the lower deck a good point. When I get to that stage I will consider that but to my eye, it is a balance of spaces or volumes that get preferences and this style of boiler works very well in that space.
Cheers

A vertical boiler would give you some space to stack firewood on the deck as well as a bit of cargo.  Every boat like this also needs a dog.

Looks like a fun project, the drawings are just great and inspirational. Australia had (somewhat larger) home-built wooden paddlers using Marshall engines, there are quite a few preserved at Echuca on the Murray River. I remember having dinner on the outside rear deck of one after dark captivated by the sparks coming out of the stack.  A bottle of Shiraz goes very well with the smell of wood smoke.

I'm have a somewhat "groundhog day" trying to get some bushes on the 1/19th scale model diorama look right.  I make them, go to bed, think about them - feel thy are not satisfactory , go back into the modelling room next morning and start all over again. I'm OK with rust and rivets but bushes just don't have those!!   Oh well - here we go again.

well, good luck everybody.
Here is the first bit the paddles frames 46 mm wide and the complete unit 68 mm wide. At first, I thought that I would only need the 2 end ones but looking at it needs on in the middle also just to make it look structurally sound.
Cheers.

Les - Just keep shacking that bush boy - as in the film (Paul Newman ) - My version of wine on a summers evening goes like this

There is a bit of an engineering mistake in the proposal drawing.  The cranks for the paddle wheel need to be outboard of the supports so that they can revolve.  Otherwise 1/2 turn and the whole thing will lock up with a terrible noise.  But then the laws of physics might work differently when standing on the ceiling.

Lawton, you are quite right about the crank assembly here are is another drawing looking into that. From here I will do A more detailed drawing of the steam power unit. The steam chests need to be further away from the paddle.

hi all.
How many of us use an airbrush most likely, Chuck and Volker I also really like it generally I find it painful but when it all lines up great my paddle wheel was airbrushed maybe the whole boat will be airbrushed we will see.?
Russ yes the bow joint I will cover it with a piece of styrene that will be fashioned to look like a metal reinforcing strip to protect the wooden hull. I use the same idea on all my overlapping joints usually with rivets. You can't really fill these sorts of joints as the filler always cracks.

Happy Easter everybody.
very quiet I suppose it is the same everywhere.
Here is another little piece of the assembled engine this will most likely change a little with the addition of hangers and other bits and pieces also the tops of the valves on the steam lines will disappear into the floor above.
The most recent example of really good machinery painting was Robert G and his sawmill but hey there are so many good painters my efforts are adequate and the weathering usually takes 1 hour. My process is undercoat top coat all water-based washers for the weathering and a bit of airbrushing.
cheers.

Happy easter, Kim. Nice weathering.
I have a small model of a pulling boat, useable for HO scale, that I want to someday
add a tiny steam engine and boiler to commemorate the full size steam launch
my son once started to build. He got a used refrigeration compressor and plans for
converting it to a steam engine and experimented with various ways to build a boiler.
He had it running on compressed air before going on to do other things, I want to build
a model capturing the spirit of his efforts. Your project here dmontrates it can be omething
that looks good, but also is fun.

Hi Bill how big is your son's boat sound like a great project? Kim

Kim, It was going to be between 16-18 ft. Alas it has been shelved to make room for RR photography at night, a modular layout, fixing up acouple apartments and more.
The steam engine he was working on was estimated to be able to produce about 3 hp. My model will commemorate the effort that went into th project, starting with no background in
either steam power or boat building, but learning very quickly along the way.

Kim,

this assembly looks very well. I like the appearance of the not so heavily worn boiler. And the red color of that stern wheel is really something  :). I don't really know anything about boats. Whenever I see a ship with a boiler over water line I can't imagine those things wouldn't tipple over due to the high barycenter.

I'm looking forward - thanks for posting.

Volker
Title: Re: Lockdown Challenge 2020
Post by: 1-32 on April 16, 2020, 03:55:16 PM
Good point Volker the way I look at it that there should be only one paddle holey in the water at once too many would create too much drag. Once you set that up it will give you the centerline of the steam chest. The center of gravity should be near the bottom of the hull and in this case, it is flatboat and quite wide it should work. The area that is causing me concern is the wheelhouse area and fitting it all in without it looking clumsy.
Hoping that all is well in Germany.
cheers

Loving the detail as this goes along.  Maybe a set of "Duck Rudders" added aft of the Paddles would be in order for those tight maneuvers and steering in reverse. Would add some more detail in the back of the boat.
Title: Re: Lockdown Challenge 2020
Post by: 1-32 on April 16, 2020, 08:20:08 PM
yes, a couple of big rudders people ask what is the purpose of such a boat.? There is a small cargo area behind the wheelhouse but its main purpose is a tug imagine a couple of barges behind going up the Congo River.

Afternoon all how are we going looks like we are heading for a very economically challenging time anyway.
My challenge is now becoming more pacific in its style and location. In the first picture, it shows a river paddlewheel tug operating on one of the large rivers in NSW Australia. This area is tropical and the prize is Australian cedar timber once common now very exotic perfect for my build. The next is the wheelhouse and last is the water supply tank which is located behind the wheelhouse construction styrene and wood weathering oil paints.
cheers.

I wonder if a tug boat wouldn't have a strengthened bow for pushing batges or so?

What is going to be the ship's name? Corona? Okay, I go stand in the corner  ;D.

Post by: Lawton Maner on May 20, 2020, 07:37:00 AM
Since it is a paddle wheeler, it should be a pusher boat rather then a tug.  one thing to consider is that the stern of the barge can be notched to receive the bow of the pusher.
Title: Re: Lockdown Challenge 2020
Post by: 1-32 on May 20, 2020, 09:35:08 AM
Morning.
Good point about the position of the barges the examples I have seen is that the barge is tied up next to the paddlewheel mother ship, personally, I think that this would be hard to control and progress would be very slow, Towing would also be hard as the ropes would get fouled in the paddlewheel so pushing is the best bet Volker you are right there needs to be something on the bow.
Lawton the crew members'
names are Clyde, Clancy, and Mabel there is also a dog and maybe a cat now it is getting crowded .

Hi
It is tiny in 1/35 scale.
10 1/4 inches or 260 mm long. This does not include the rudders.
5 1/2 inches or 135 mm wide.
6 1/4 inches or 155 mm heigh.
I will call it" Madel" with my late mother in mind she was born in 1916

Hi Russ.
. My Mum was born in 1916 some common women's names were Olive, Pearl , Lilly, Ivory, and Mabel, owners of boats were only too happy to use family names to claim ownership. Looking at the full frontal view some of those streaks need to be toned down a very light black wash should do the trick.

Morning all.
I have just changed my heading from Lockdown challenge to -
Recent modelling from Kim.
Here we are coming out of lockdown and forming a bubble with New Zeland and later with New Gunie, Fiji, Tonga, Somai all these countries have had low infections and it is a benefit to all. But the Australian government is not issuing permits to travel outside of this bubble it might be years before I  can travel to anywhere else. Thank goodness for the web.
The number of models that I produce it is much easier to have one heading with some subheadings thus the new heading.
Moving along here is a new one a 0-4-0 field barn style steam loco using a Bachmann  On30 Porter I miss Magic Trains mechanisms.
cheers.

Bachmann Porter mechanisms are sort of disappointing, aren't they? Do you have a trick to improve them?

I like how the model is shaping up.

Morning Russ and Carlo.
So many have lost their jobs I think all debt all should be canceled and we all can start again after all money is such an abstract idea. yes, I can see the banks rushing to send you an Email with the good news.
anyway.
There is not much choice when you want to retrofit 0-4-0 mechanisms so a porter is an easily accessible product. The biggest problem I see is the visible set screws on the connecting rods why why did Bachmann do this? When I get there a cover plate of some sort will have to be fabricated to cover them.
cheers.

I have no idea what your Mother's name is, but I vote for Mabel as the name for the ship's dog.

Forgiving debts would be a good idea for those who have lost jobs during the pandemic.  With the millions the banks give themselves each year not doing it would free up the funds to help out others.

Hi Russ.
that is about right.
To my knowledge, there have been four commercial bodies produced that use drop-in common power units the rest have been built by model builders, Bernard from Australia[narrowgauger on this forum]has built some lovely examples . Myself because I have a style there is a clash and modifying a beautiful model is not an option all I want is a mechanism that is not too fine that I can use as a base.

The first photo is the reject yes narrow gauge but not field railways the last 2 are the accepted versions.
Rember Mabel, she is back at the builders for a refit now looking a whole lot better.

Great work Volker.
So a narrow gauge 2 foot or 600 mm gauge turnout. It started out as a common cheap Peco electric fog code 100 turnout sharp radius. What I did was to cut out most of the plastic except for the fog and the spring-loaded point blades . The new bits are the wooden ties ground throw and of course the weeds. Two wires operate the whole thing the route is set by the point blades, size 300 mm long by 150 mm wide.
All the best and have a great weekend Kim.

Bernard, I  just cobble together stuff really I cant do highly detailed track work or mechanisms but I really like them. I was taught by model engineers but did not follow that direction all smoke and mirrors but hey it is really good fun even if the Bachmann mechanism is noisy, jumpy and the trackwork is held together with blobs of glue and solder.

Good afternoon all.
Skipping along and back to my paddle boat plus a visiting skiff, really I just keep fiddling with it most likely it will never be finished but that is ok. Eventually, it will be a part of a shelf field railway in 1/35 scale. Every change I really like I suppose it is all about having an idea and letting it mature.

Yeah, there are several YouTubers who do videos like that. Most of them worry me -- they might know what they're doing but they seem to take a lot of risks, and possibly encourage less knowledgeable people to enter old mines. Plus the government is always looking for an excuse to close off old mines, and I suspect those videos may be attracting government attention. Then there are the kooks who play up the "haunted mine" BS to get clicks.

Hi all.
Moving along.
The first picture is the barge with a bit more of the creeper this is the effect that I want -exposed warped wood that nature is slowly taking over.
The last picture is the other bales that I have done, build a form out of cheap cardboard first then drape in the air-cured modeling clay. I roll it out much as you would do with pastry with a rolling pin you can get it really thin then emboss with anything you want like fine gauze put the finished article in the sun for a short while then it is ready for priming. This is an excellent product for creating shapes that are more organic than a hard edge
Anyway yes, I do a lot of modelling I really hope that I don't get on your nerves I really am trying to be selective.
cheers.

Afternoon all good here, what is needed is a platform to display my recent, track work, boats, and my interest in working mechanical signaling so. A shelf working display model size 1200 mm by 480 mm half land half water features. Simple layout on the right a yard mouth to the next module, traveling to the left a footbridge then a  turnout to a turntable then the whalf  line 1/35 scale on 16.5 mm track about 80 percent hand made no time limit working mechanical signaling  1 house 1 turntable etc
cheers.

Wow, if that's "simple" then what do you consider complex? :)   Sounds like a neat diorama.

Complex would have, in addition to what is already there, a traveling carnival with working rides and a tent show.

As ever it is a pleasure to watch your work progress.  The signal in your last photo is quite good.  I guess the white sheet behind the blade is because at one part of a day, the sun is behind the signal?  Some years ago I remember a visit to the Kent and East Sussex railway where there was a hawk sitting on one of the signals who seemed to be quite surprised when it moved under his feet.

Morning.
Basically just one track with one turnout I could have squeezed more in but really what is the point this shelf will have lots of good model time. Lawton I really like signals the white section behind helps with sighting say the signal is placed against a complicated background. I won't be using this one I want a wooden post that is attached to the face of the bridge controlling the entrance to the yard behind the signal will be a supporting structure of some sort. The footbridge is just a footbridge say 5 feet or 1500 mm wide for foot traffic only.

Truly complicated is all of the monkey work which is needed to get British signals to work properly.  I'll stick with the tri-color signals in the US which resemble stop lights.

Title: Re: recent modelling from KIM
Post by: 1-32 on September 21, 2020, 12:41:21 PM
Morning.
The lower. quadrant signals this one is based on a specific location the arms from the top-top arm good to go, S arm go to the next signal only, and the small banner on the right good to cross over to the other line running in the opposite direction.
In all, their forms lovely pieces of art , cast metal, blacksmiths and woodworkers situated across the country illuminated at night with slow-burning oil lamps. The USA, Germany had some fine examples especially with the Boston and Main but the most excentric were the British complex and the beauty of them was if the cable was cut with the weight in the arm they would automatically return to stop.
With all this in the day, I made signal cabins to control all my signals mechanically crazy looking back on it all . Leavers to the lead out then cranks for the turnouts and flat wheels for the cables and chains leading to the signals. All over the world, this basic principle was used but with differently designed leavers.
And finally , Classico Italiano signals great talk about complex definitely showing the Italians flair for design.
cheers.

You sent me an article in the 1990s about a diorama you built and it included some wonderful signals. Do the control cabins or signals in these photos date back that far or are they newer? -- Russ
Title: Re: recent modelling from KIM
Post by: 1-32 on September 21, 2020, 03:25:34 PM
Hi Russ .
Yes, the signal cabin is from that era if I remember there was a drawing to go with it all.
Sort of got away from all that really the amount of fine-scale work all hand done is a killer but with the new diorama, I will revisit it all from a narrow-gauge perspective. When I did all that signalling stuff I was lucky to be taught workshop techniques from a talented model engineer pre-computer age but the relationship finished when I got tired of dealing with point mm accuracy.
I had stars in my eyes thought I could make a few bucks from producing parts so you could make your own signal in 1/32 scale. Mistake this was the time when injected plastic of high-quality was coming onto the market my hand made parts were just not making the grade so I ended up selling all the castings at a loss but I have kept the brass patterns.
Since then I have enjoyed modelling a lot more no more stars  no more computer just mucking around.
cheers

You have a good memory, Kim. You did include drawings with that article and I think a digital version of that magazine is available. I was very impressed with your signals and the cabin back then (along with the rest of the layout) and still am.

I tried professional model building for a little while, too, until I realized it was a huge amount of fussy work for almost no money. Models are something many of us may enjoy as a hobby but probably would start to hate as a business.

Moving along I showed a cardboard cutout before of a house that I wanted to build well it has progressed this style I am very familiar with, when you drive around you find all sorts of stuff tucked away like this some still lived in but most deserted full of snakes I don't go inside.
The second picture shows the back the door leads down from the kitchen the rustic bathroom will be on the right the toilet out in the landscape a pan no sewer. The windows are glass louvers typical pain to make but in the end, they work.

Hi Helmut and Russ.
Yes, the purple is pushing the fashion boundary here about.
Locally everybody goes to a chain of stores for all there building , gardening and home decorating it is called Bunnings a bit of a legend really. When you are going down to buy some paint most check out the mis- tinted can of paint usually they are a bargain but you have to put with some wild colours like Purple, goes well with the Dump down the road or the worst house in the best street the key to making money with real estate.

Morning all.
Yes, the lemon tree common around the world always one around for a healthy shot first thing in the morning. I have never made one so it will be a great challenge and will require a few field trips to get photo reference.I have just built an outside toilet basically a shed but maybe I won't use it, the time era is 1960 so an inside septic system would be possible , washing hanging under the back roof concrete washing tubs and a ringer washing machine all possible.
Mr Burt Monroe will be on my to-watch list talking about my watch list I have been sucked into Live rail cams
The one that I watch on U tube is at La Plata Missouri USA. the mainline between Kansas and Chicago a 24/7 camera a rail viewing platform and a set of boom gates nothing else. Lovely little town and when I tune in because of the time difference it is in the early hours of the morning so the scene is set for pure theatre. About  2 minutes out you can hear the horn then the boom gates spring into action lit up like a big Christmas tree then out of the darkness the train hits. Four to five huge Burlington Santa Fey diesel horns blaring headlights on full travelling full throttle with a parcel express much noise lights everywhere the camera shaking. After the huge train has passed usually in about 90 seconds the boom gates rise lights go out and the little town goes back to sleep darkness is the king again.
cheers

There's an old Mission-style depot at a place called Kelso in the middle of the Mojave desert. I go through there almost every year, usually while returning from my Nevada trips. There are four tracks at the grade crossing. During the '80s and '90s it was a busy place -- trains coming and going every 10-20 minutes, and often there would be a train stopped on the siding waiting for clearance to proceed. I used to enjoy stopping there to make a sandwich, then sit back and watch the trains go by. Then for something changed, and the past 20 years or so very few trains go through there.

Watching a fast moving freight train go by at night in the middle of the desert is always exciting. I remember one time in particular, I was at a grade crossing in a very isolated area. No lights or anything. It was a pitch black, moonless night, and I stood about ten feet from the tracks as this freight train roared by in the dark. It was almost invisible, just a huge black shadow, as the ground shook and the wind of its passing was like a gale. Very, very impressive experience.

Hi, Barney Mr. Munro was a native of New Zealand in this part of the world they have a reputation for being clever, there is a saying that all they need is a bit of wire and a nail I forget the rest.
Lawton guesses what I agree with you.
Frithjof great to hear from you I see it as a fusion with technology and art just my personal preference.
And finally a shot of one of my recent sheds actually an outside toilet I have been playing around with peeling laminates. There is a bit of social comment about long grass and lawnmowers here about. It goes along the line that you have to keep the grass short to keep the family safe. Nasty surprises don't like to travel across open areas.

Yes, the grass good comment and very relevant. This is only a temporary effect the finished effect will be different and more varied. I usually use a number of test card effects quick and cheap to see what they look like, nothing like committing to an effect then finding that you hate it. It is called roughing in.
The world that I  first thought of was a sandy terrane with bits of grass but that has changed now seeing that I have a lawnmower.

Hi!
I love your mechanical signals. Are they Australian? Seems like some kind of British heritage.
Excellent modelling work!

Hi Helge.
The heritage of Australian signalling is based on the British outline in both software and hardware. Rember that Australia is a collection of individual states some followed British standards some USA standards then they all got mixed up confused yes, consider this there is no standard railway system around the country it is a collection of different gauges..
Signalling is great I belong to a few signalling groups on Facebook there is always some gem being unearthed.
cheers Kim
