good morning everybody after a extensive research period let it be known that my new model will be called -blue top salvage.i like the name.anyway it is still being built but it is taking shape.
in summery the items that have been added.
1-under the travelling crane is the frame section of the stern of the "james craig"the drawings of this 1930 light house tender are on the net.it is being re-built here in sydney and after 10 years it will be finished in 2013.a referance picture is included.the frame is cut out of styrene with a piercing saw.
2-i am adding lights around the factory.they are tude design which are in keeping with the 1970,s.after looking around i am using a ho scale variety from a german company-viessmann.they are a hard thing to find and seen to not exist in any other scale.they work
3-i have added a platform on top to the shipping contaner i will store items from the travelling crane .
4-i have taken the shed off the top level and added a 20000 litre poly water tank instead.again styrene.
5-added a chemical wash out basin to frount of the contaner.
6-on going work on the back scene.i have taken out a row of grass right at the back and trimed the folage .the tecknique i am using to stop shadows on the backscene is to airbrash a back shadow to absorb the outline of passing trains .

It continues to become a really nice, and quite clever, little scene. Despite maybe toning back the colour a bit from your previous projects, there is still a certain colour intensity to the scene here that I associate as a bit of your signature. As a bit of a link on this scene with some discussions on other threads, yes, it is cluttered, but it looks like sensible organised and clutter, a bit like the the reference shot on the other thread. There appears a logical reason for why junk and parts are where they are. Little things, like the shipping container becoming a site storeshed, with the added luxuries of the wash stand, and then the need for more storage, so the addition of the roof platform, all make sense to the composition of the scene. Even though the scene is considerably compressed, it still has a good degree of plausibility to it.

most of my referance for my projects have come from a area of sydney harbour called rozelle bay.this bay is where that put all the crap of a working harbour.well sydney harbour is a no longer a working harbour and the local residences complained about all the crap. was lucky enough to get in before they sent in the cleaners,

The only thing that is bothering me is the depth of the water. The plants and growth around the piles and crane supports do not suggest deep enough water, p.e. for the barge.

yep good call on the water depth.the way i look at it is that a barges draft of about 12 inches[300mm] and it would easily float in a silted up industral lagoon.reeds are a bit like weeds they grow anywhere and around the wooden piles there would be enough silt and crap to keep them growing

hi all christmas is nearly here it seems that it was just yesterday that we all had 2010 greetings.i have been slowly building and changing the module.most of my work has been done on the central bage.i have trying to get the mud and the deck of the barge to blend in.the steps from the whalf have been added and the next progrect is to add a big rusting propeller to the ship frame.

hello .
blue top salvage is a great hobby item ,it has supplied me with years worth of enjoyment and promises years to come.one of the projects that i have started on is the barge on the right hand of the scene it is silted into the bank.my initial idear was to re -cycle one of my caravans onto the barge.i have changed my mind and have opted for a small contaner for a living area with a porta loo[portable toilet] .it is quite amazing how many designs there are of porta loos,the shape remains about the same but there is a lot of different castings and colours .i also have to incorprate a pre- residental industral use of the barge,i will keep you posted .

I love this model, Kim. There's a lot of good modelling in a rather small, very dedicated scene, with the many elements contributing to build the mood. This is not conceptual modelling, but modelling with a concept, as Anders said.

i have been working on the barge that goes on the right of the lagoon .this is a accomadation unit made up of a shipping contaner that has been butchered with a angle grinder.good old aluminium windows have been inserted into the cavities with a combination metal and canvas awning;i suppose it should have insict screens-but.it is permantely silted into this location with a huge tree covering it[it is growing]
it is made mostley with styrene-90% scratch,the figures are by preiser.

It doesn't really scream "location, location, location" as far a prime real estate for modern living, but as far a scrap box building and construction, thats pretty cool. Nice use of salvaged materials to cobble together a "tranquil" residence. Its funny, despite the less than attractive shack, the owner still seems to have managed to drag in some good looking chicks!

good morning and greetings.
my new year period has been taken up with building up my basic tree with twigs.they have been glued on first with super glue then 5 minute expoxy.dont ask me what type of tree it is as i am making it up as i go along.my favorite variety to look for are daisy bushes,there used to be some good sizes bushes in my local park but they have gone.what i look for are bushes about 2 foot heigh[600mm]which have died.faling that it is amazing what you can find if you walk around garden suburbs.my next step is to airbrush the shape then the folage,the overall feel i want to this side is 'overgrown and dense in selected areas

I compute this as still only a 30 feet high tree though?
hi, i use a lot of compression of scale in my work,if i did 100% true scale i would be out the door.
my leaves are very simple it is a form of folage net made by a german company-
Heki-FLOR,9 different colours.it is great stuff as the net is nearly invisible and the folage is already attached.as with all this stuff there is a trick .i like it so much i am building a forest with it.

It makes for a good contrast between sides of the layout. I feel it works surprisingly well with the industrial hardness alongside the nature of the swamp, and the residence has nestled in nicely at the edge of the murky waters. Thanks for the update.

what do you reckon living in this scene,i would love it.having a nice forest to walk the dogs in ,your own private railway a old factory to strip of scrap to sell on the black market and a few boats around to impress the ladies all it needs is a good cook and a big vegie patch.

the blue top salvage company is slowly moving along -the main jobs have been adding foreground detail.i bought some bullrushes from scenic express.they are a bit plasticeky but when used with other folage mediums work well.there still seems a lot to do itis one of those models that will never be finished.

.one of the objectives of blue top salvage is to build a exhibition layout that is small enough that i can drag it around the country side and show.my first outing will be in october at a big exhibition here in sydney.my past experience of showing is that you are so busy talking that you do,not have any time to look after the model,thus the circle of track.just set and forget and have a chat.
this brings me to the subject of locoes in both 1-35 and 1-32 scale.commercially they are thin on the ground the slack is taken up by building your own or waiting for a professional loco builder to release a limited run.the late mick south of calgery -canada had the best collection of 1-32 locoes many of which were special orders.after his death 3 years ago his collection has vanished.anyway enough of the conspiracy theory.
at the moment i have three locoes in 1-32 but i need one of these to be a exhibition work horse that can run for hours without problems.
here is a picture of a malcom moore diesel that was a limited run kit produced by the model company new zealand ,it is made in pewter.

it is powered by a black beatle spud drive.i find it to be to big for my purposes as my other locoes are of the simplex variety that is small open and fit the general feeling of blue top salvage .i want to bash it into something else .i have always liked the lister range but i feel that is a scratch build project my conclusion is to freelance the malcom moore.

i have been looking at lights for my -blue top salvage.in the past i have been using daylight fluroes.great but bulky and heavy.one alternative that is coming more popular is leds in strips.each strip is 10 mm[about one half inch] wide and weighs nothing.12 volt no heat and flexible.there are different types the non daylight types are stronger. to get the same lux value as 1 30 watt fluro of the daylight type 2 strings together are recommended. i have tried this combination but i feel this is not true i looks a lot darker,maybe i have to re- think how i can use this flexible product to its best advantage.

I've done a few experiments with similar LED strips a little while back, with the same goal, to reduce weight and bulk from a portable rig. I also was less than satisfied with the lighting levels, especially when compared against the common daylight fluro tube. Lighting is always a debatable subject with models and railway layouts...the fluro does throw plenty of light, perhaps too much, and washes out colour a bit, but it does leave an even field for easy viewing and general photography. Spot lighting may give a better result from a photography perspective, but doesn't serve as well as a general purpose light, especially with the varied environments of an exhibition layout. I'm probably planning on using compact fluro globes for my next piece...saves a bit of bulk over the fluro tube, but also avois the fluro hum, which can do my head in sometimes.
I'm probably going to use the LED strips I collected for some underbench storage lighting, or camping applications, but unfortunately not on my model railway efforts.

the objects above have just been painted in either water or oil based paints.as soon as the oil based paint has dried i will knock back the gloss.materials used wood paper wire and styrene.i will post a update when they have been installed in there finished position.it should be interesting as to there effect .

This layout has a wonderful Heath-Robinson feel to it. Amazing amount of detail and whacky pieces all stuffed into a very small area!

This pprject is just growing wonderfully. Such a complex collection of individual pieces, where as cluttered as if seems, each piece seems to have a legitimate reason for being part of that great mess. There are plenty of opportunities to "look through" the collection and see the rear sections, which I think adds well to the depth of such a small scene. That lift bridge makes for a nice focal point at the front of the layout as well. So many changes of angle, keeps the eyes going for some time. I like when a small footprint like this is able to keep the viewer busy for a good length of time with so much to find a read into the story.

good morning all
when i think about it i loved heath robinson all those logically complicated scenes quite different from the design trends that were started in europe post ww2.there was a similar gentleman in the usa- rube goldberg.
it is getting a bit fragile inside blue top salvage all that styrene.on aspect that i would love to add is signage if possible hand graphics there are very few digital examples that work for me.anyway there are more stuff that i will add as the mood takes .

a while ago i posted a picture of a malcom moore loco in 1-32 scale that i wanted to bash.the next 2 photos show the results.i kept the chassie and motor.the rest is either scratched or kit bashed from my scrap box.the finished size is 85 mm long[3.5 inches]35mm wide[1.5inches] by 75mm heigh[3 inches]the motive power is a black beetle.

Geez, she's pretty ugly, but thats a good thing!
Will look right at home waddling along between the rest of the interesting collection around the dock. Doesn't really look like its built for either comfort, or speed :). The red front plate has a cool finish to it.
Gonna be ready for its first show shortly?

i have been playing around with a few different barriers for paint effects.the one i used for the red is vaseline.paint your flat base colour then apply a bit of vasline then your top colour.you can then either rub or dissolve the vasline to create a irregular pattern.another way for peeling paint is to apply rubber cement under the top coat[ rubber cement is used in the graphics trade as a glue].when all is dry with a blade peel away the cement creating a rugged pattern.
yes don i am off to the 50 year anniversity of model railway exhibitions here in sydney at the end of the month.after 3 days 9 hours a day i swear i will never do one again it usually really exhaust me as i do it by myself.this year it is a big show 51 models plus trade i am tucked away in a little corner next to a huge digital n scale layout ,talk about chalk and cheese.

this is a update of the finished version of blue top salvage as exhibited here in sydney this weekend[i dont feel that it will ever be finished] plus one of my faverite models -trainsville.trainsville was started in the 1940 and has grown but stayed the same since,it is a legend .7mm course scale ,scratch built,3 rails and heavy.

Choosing a salavage yard is perfect for your detail cravings! Never ending.
thanks guys ,the high level viewing level worked very well.it was nice that people could get in close and have a good look at eye level.to lift the light level i used a 15 watt fluro and the leds together.

Hi Kim the new loco look just like is was built from a pile of salvage, and will no doubt fit right in.
It has that look of something built by a team from a TV series called "Junk Yard Wars" or something like that title, that I remember watching many years ago.
