Well its a start with a module 9inx14in - Scale 1/35th - most small parts at the moment all trial fit - soon to get that been there forever look ! sunk in the mud and long grass

It looks really good already. I had been wondering whether you were on vacation or working on a new model project. This would seem to answer the question. -- Russ
Liking this a lot... looking forward to seeing more. Funny coincidence: back in grade school I knew a kid called Nobby Clark. Real name was Norbert, but everyone called him Nobby. Lived across the street from us. Don't remember a lot of junked vehicles in his yard though, so probably a different Nobby.
Looking great! Great subject.
Ah, lovely rust and grot. At least that Matador has a new lease of life. Nice thing about scrapyards is you can put anything you like in them and use up all those otherwise unwanted bits from kits.
Les
Nice scenery, Barney. I like it very much.
Bernhard
Nice start!
There's a lot of life in that pile of junk.
The down sizing has gone to pot !!!

bad night with the photos
Looking good. The gear driven loco sounds interesting.
You might have had trouble resizing the photos but nothing went wrong with your modeling! -- Russ
Wonderful work.
Looking good!
Have you said anything about your painting techniques in any of your threads on this forum?
QuoteHave you said anything about your painting techniques in any of your threads on this forum?
Yes Barney, please tell us how you made the rusting so beautiful!
Good start. I am already very curious about the finished model
Bernhard
Rust is beautiful unless your car has just failed its MOT - then it becomes a headache !! modelling rust it is an art form - my rust technics are basic -
First (and these are my thoughts) is to understand rust - rust normally comes from beneath the paint due to damage to the underside of lets say a car wing or panel
it only appears on top of metal if the panel has been scratched or dented or if it is bare metal like rails or unpainted panels
Then there is types of rust - eg overnight rust on bare metal or newish metal see the boiler chimney and the new fire box door its normally quite flat in texture with an orange tinge to it then you get the corrosive type normally comes through from the inside off panels /sills and outrigger chassis members - this has texture and its darker in colour see the drain pipe looks like it had no primer and the paint bubbles up and flakes off .
the drain pipe
The best bet is to look at the experts and ideas first up is our Chucks methods real amazing stuff and with step by step instructions on his Fotki site - another good one is Rinaldi Studio Press SMO2 -S-65 City tractor - a very nice published small book with several versions of weathering - there are many more all with there own versions even on this forum years back
Now my version don't get to excited it don't always work !!
If the object is completely rusty - spray an undercoat of rust (enamel paints work best for this ) then a couple of hair spray coats -the last one sprinkle fine salt if you want a patchy look with rust coming through - when dry spray a coat of acrylic paint on top let dry and then go over it with a small stumpy brush with water scrubbing the edges first or basically follow the the hair spray techniques of the "experts" I finish off with brushing weathering powders in the corners and crevices or dry brush some metal coat on some surfaces - you always get a few oily /shiny bolts !
Its all a matter of observation of the real thing-and trying out different ways on practice pieces - - One day Im going to write a book of RUST - ITS ON MY BUCKET LIST
Barney
Thanks for this tutorial. You can always find interesting tips here.
Bernhard
Vertical boiler loco coming together - but then you notice the amount of cleaning you need to do !!!!!

other bit
Looks great so far!
Looking sharp!
Started filling the shed with recondition parts
Barney
The oil engine is still under restoration
Gets better and better!
Bernhard
Hi Barney .
Very nice your styrene work and composition is very nice, not easy arranging everything in a random manner.
'cheers
A lot of my inspiration comes from the TV serious Shed and buried - these two guys travel around the country visiting "shed collections" you just will not believe the amount of glorious rust and grot they find I suppose you could call it random clutter but our Nobby try's to keep some order in the yard -

A bit more work on the derelict Steam Loco

next rear end showing part dismantled engine the brass bar across the engine is for the revering bits
the other side
A bit of progress on the yard area the trial fit of the oil tank (its there to hide the wires for the shed lighting)
A visitor to the yard but did not escape before they dismantled it - a small diesel critter built by the Australian DAY CO - a real odd bod the driver sits about 8ft
in the air ! - the model was constructed by "Gordon the Flying Scotsman " hopefully he will give a run down on the build

a closer look
We have been a very busy lad, haven't we, young Barney? Not only does the steam critter under construction look positively outstanding (and disgustingly perfect), the shed and its junk assortment credible and attractive, but it also seems you have worked out some issues with resizing your jpeg images for our annoying forum software. Satisfactory. -- Russ
Looks great! It's really coming together nicely!
Beautiful work on the details and the coloring. Gotta love the "Critter"!
Jerry
I love this rusty mess. Perfectly done!
Bernhard
Barney, Good job getting Gordon back in the game. His critter and your diorama go together like flotsam & jetsam.
This diorama and this details are perfect !
Well was hoping to get the steamer into the spray shop BUT ! many parts still want a good clean up + some rivets are missing and others have popped up !
most parts still trial fit only and some bits need completely doing again - Although the engine is destined for the scrap yard I think it still needs to be a bit "smarter " in appearance !!
I think a week off should do it then start again to finish it
Barney

It will be "Roof Less" with Ivey growing up the sides
Front and rear wooden (rotting) beams will be fitting with the coupler pockets rusting
Looks reasonably acceptable to me :D :D :D
Hi Barney .
Your junkyard looks great , the overall finish is very uniform and convincing..
And the little critter will fit right in such a nice compact item.
All the best -Kim
I think Gordon sums it up adequately. -- Russ
I love all the little details on that critter.

I agree. It is only let down by that nondescript cobbled together loco at the end of the tracks ! Still, it could always be sent to me for scrapping ! :D
Lots of character in that loco and as always a lovely clean and crisp look to your modelling. Just needs the rust now.

Don't worry , it should blend into my diorama nicely and I have a big tarpaulin to throw over it !
Now, now children. Stop squabbling. Kiss and make up otherwise Uncle Russ will make you both stand in the corner
Les
A really pretty little steamer. I am already curious how she looks painted and weathered.
Bernhard
"HERCULE' The diesel tractor critter has now moved down the track to allow " FITSGERALD " The Steamer -To RIP at the end of the track in the undergrowth

Yes, Miss. Sorry , Miss... but he started it .
I am already in the corner from 2016 so that is not much of a threat !
This is fantastic Barney. The detail is spot on!
Young Nicholas, you are a disruptive influence. I must have a talk with your mommy. Even so, I don't know what we should do with you. I just don't know .... -- Russ
The McCormick Critter has moved and Nobby's called it a day and took his boots off

Now THAT is an adequate diorama. -- Russ
Nice!
A few shots of the NEARLY FINISHED JOB - Im leaving the scenery bit to a later date Then I might be able to get some decent shots outside with a better /natural background . also I think the small base board will look better when fitted to the main base board (yet to be constructed ) and scenics blended in to suit
And the big excuse is I don't want to get fed up with it !! So in the box it goes for a short rest !!
So here is a few shots of a "walk round of Nobby's Emporium "

I don't know what else you need to do with the scenery. That is already an outstanding diorama. Satisfactory. -- Russ
Great job! I like the last photo best. The dramatic shadows bring out more of the detail.
Lovely work Barney, the vertical-boilered loco now has the perfect "rust and crud" effect, especially like the weathered wooden buffers.
Les
Russ Im thinking on the scenery side of things - Climbing /Ivy type of thing climbing up the sides of the Steamer and other bits - The engine of the steamer requires some oily gunge
Barney
Very well done Barney. Can't get enough of all the detail.
