Silverton Northern Rail-Bus and three Work Trucks.1:16 scale
To start out lets talk about the wheels and some other older projects that I used these wheel on. The wheels are 24 inch and 36 inch V-belt pulley from Ozark Miniatures with one flange turned off. In 1:16 scale the 24 inch castings are around 14 inches and the 36 inch castings are around 24 inches in diameter. The casting was chucked up on my lathe using a 1/8 inch diameter bolt and two nuts, and the flange was filed off more than using a cutting tool.

Silverton Northern Rail-Bus and three Work Trucks.
I first started this model back over 20 years ago back then on some of my projects I would make parts for more than one model. This model I build four and started to assemble the frame and running gear.
The first Work Truck #7 and the Silverton Northern Rail-Bus will be left as originally designed. Mostly wood construction, the wheels are 24 inch casting was used for the front truck and the 36 inch V-belt pulley for the rear wheels. The chain and sprockets are from Serve-O-Link

Silverton Northern Rail-Bus. (Does anyone know if this loco had a turn-table under the frame at any time in it's history?)
The walls are made up of a inside layer and a outside layer of Northeastern Scale Lumber scribed sheathing with a center wall out of 0.15 inch thick wood strips with 0.15 inch thick clear styrene for the window glass. After the walls are painted the glass will slide in from the top. At this point the four walls and floor will come apart. The roof is made out of basswood and I used the top of the walls for the starting point for the roof. Now I will add the rest of the detail, and put this on my done list after a very long time.

Part for the two Work Trucks.
These last two work trucks are being redesigned with the better wheels. Using the same castings I then added a 0.30 inch thick styrene washer that I cut with my X-Acto circle-cutter for the flange and two layers of 0.20 inch X .125 inch styrene strip around the casting for the tire. I had to enlarge the front truck to make up for the larger wheels. And also on the rear wheel assemble. These wheels and frame will give me a good base for the rest of the model.

What is the small wheel under the bed behind the rear axle for?
Marty
Marty, the small wheel is part of the brakes.

Looks good. I like the angled roof line too.
Beautiful!
This work simply amazes me. Outstanding. Thank you for sharing. As a side note, have you thoroughly vetted your yard personnel? Anyone new? The gentleman in the leather jacket looks suspiciously like the infamous Captain Black. Beware, this villain is known for infiltrating production facilities and sabotaging new equipment. You may want to check with Spectrum just to be on the safe side.

Thanks guys for your comments. I'm going to use the 100 hp Wisconsin 6 Cylinder engine for these two work trucks. This engine is the same as the one in my Lombard Rail truck. The plans are in the Sept /Oct 2007 Narrow Gauge and Short Line Gazettet. I added to the length of the frame front section.

Wow, that looks amazing!
Nifty!
Very nice - I notice you use wood for a lot of the construction (engine blocks ) what type do you find best ?
Barney
Thanks guys for your comments. Barney, I use Basswood for it's fine grain. If I need a part larger than 1/2" lets say 3/4" I will laminate 1/2" stock with 1/4" stock. I can find stock up to 1/2" X 3" or 4" wide 24" long at my train shop or at a craft store (hobby lobby). Northeastern scale lumber has a larger selection of basswood parts, more sizes of sheets and strips, up to 6" wide, structural and architectural shapes and milled shapes of all types. If you don't like wood grain on your engine block you can apply sand sealer or a thin CA.
Gordon Birrell

That is so cool looking!!
Jerry
Thanks guys for your comments. Here's three photos of the water truck. I will add the needed detail, starting in the front working my way to the rear. Cow catcher, deck in front of the radiator, radiator guard, deck on both sides of the motor compartment misc. detail and lights. Cab will be built over the cab base (floor and fire wall) (seat base and gas tank) (controls and seat). More details on the cab later. Cab steps and a sand box on both sides, and the rest of the detail on the tank and pup.

Incredibly good.
Yes! Excellent work!
Beautiful work Gordon.
Jerry
If you need larger sizes of Basswood, ask at a local cabinet shop where they get their stock. My vender can get me stock up to 4" thick and I supply it to a niece who likes to carve animal figures as a hobby. Many cabinet shops use Basswood as the material of choice for painted cabinets.
As an aside, ever since I bought a Barnes miniature tablesaw I have made my own scale lumber from 4/4 rough stock which I buy from the vender who supplies most of the lumber I use making full sized furniture.
Really nice work!
Greg
Love it! I like that green paint.
Beautiful, and a really interesting piece of equipment!
Thanks guys for your comments. Chuck, the green is Humbrol Grass Green # 80. It's just some paint I had on hand.. I still have a little more detail to add.

It looks great and as usual I am always in awe of your skills and talent! I cannot believe its been so long since my original drawings for the Lombard rail truck

Lately I have been able to play with one of the few surviving beasts as well as its steam powered predecessor.

One more Work Truck to come.
Gordon Birrell
https://www.flickr.com/photos/gordonbirrell/
Thanks guys for your comments. Here's the last Work Truck I started painting (step A) Scalecoat II # 2001 Loco Black (Matte).(step B) Yellow Humbrol # MATT 154. The black is out of a rattel can.The yellow is 50% paint 50% Lacquer Thinner. (Air brushed) (step C) Washed Raw Umber artist oil and Odorless Turpenoid.( Hand brush) I use Spray Lacquer (Dullcote) between all steps and at the end of the process. I got the Scalecoat paint online. from Minuetman Scale Models .
The cab is made up out of Evergreen styrene sheet, strips and angle. The four walls come apart at the corners. Diferent colors on outside and inside of cab makes constrution a little harder. The window glass is Evergreen clear sheet that will slid in from the top of the wall after the cab is finished and painted. To start the core layer is cut out of .030 styrene sheet the four walls are cut to size. Cut out the window opening on each of the walls. On the corners of the front and rear walls I added a .250 styrene angle on the outside of the core wall and a .188 styrene angle (this angle is .025 thick. I added 005 styrene strip to even it up to .030.) on the inside of the core wall back .030 from the corner give a little extra space so the side wall can slide in easyer. On the outside of the cab (front and rear walls) the core layer can also be the finish layer only need to add the trim layer. On the inside of the core you need a layer .015 sheet styrene and clear sheet styrene for the window glass and a layer of .015 to go up next to the glass, and to level up to the inside of the .188 styrene corner angle and a layer of trim. Around the top of the walls outside and inside a .125 x.250 styrene strip and on top of the walls just to the outside of the window layer a .125 x .125 styrene strip that the roof fits over. To get the round corner I added to the side walls a.030 quarter round and a extra .030 layer and a layer of trim to finish the wall out.
Core Wall... Red
Angle...Yellow
Inside wall and Extra Outside Wall...Green
Glass...Blue

Awesome!! Excellent work, as always!
Thanks guys for your comments. Painting (step A and C) are the same (step B) I ran out of the Humbrol Yellow# 154 MATT and was not able to get more. My LHS had one can of Scalecoat UP Yellow S1022 paint and it's a good match.
Here's more photos of the finished truck and crane. Looking for a better load for this truck the auto crane I can't see much use on a rail-truck (very little reach on the boom and with a short winch cable), so I'm thinking of setting the crane on a pedestal on the Monorail track Diorama for a focal point.
