Hi Nick, Barney and I seem to disagree on gears. I recall building a 1/35 scale RB17 some years ago based on the Accurate Armour kit plus info from the excellent book on Ruston Bucyrus excavators. That was a diesel machine with the gears covered. The one I will be working on is a steam driven one with exposed gears. I think it's going to have to be 3d printed gears unless anyone on the forum knows of a source of 33mm gears. And yes I am back on the "north island". Not sure about "proper modelling" though.

I did some straight and bevelled 3D printed gears for a 1:34 steam shovel recently (an Osgood I think).  That was my sole contribution so no pics.

But it's a great solution to get parts like this for a static model.  I'd be cautious about exposing the teeth to any significant load, but visually very accurate.  I guess you could cast them if you wanted operating parts.

Lawrence, as our resident 3-D printing guru and professional modeler, would you accept orders for printed parts from forum members? Enquiring minds want to know. -- Russ

And I'm an enquiring mind. The gears I'm looking for are 32-36mm diameter ( I'm working in 1/24 scale.

Firstly, it's not my intention to solicit for work here.  But, in principle, I'm open for business.

As a simple guide anyone wishing for parts drawn and printed should supply working drawings/sketches etc to the same standard required to make the part any other way.  I CAN work from oblique photos with your wife posed for scale, but I don't enjoy it and pricing reflects that (Unless you happen to be married to one of my favourite starlets, in which case the price will still reflect the difficulty, but I will enjoy it)!  In all seriousness, the old saying 'garbage in, garbage out' is particularly relevant and it's amazing what some expect me to do with virtually no data. You've been warned.

Free to discuss needs by email anyway.
Cheers,

Should be straightforward.  My email is in my profile.

It has been evident you never joined the forum to solicit work. It also is likely members of this forum are capable of sending decent plans. As for starlets, did I ever mention that my next door neighbor from primary school through high school was the Oscar winning actress, Sally Field? -- Russ

If it should be brass gears, I have had good experience with this company in Poland: Click

Fast delivery, dimensions, number of teeth, module, axle diameter freely selectable...

P.S. I am not related to this company - I just got good results.

   Bernd,

The reason Russ didn't bother to reply as he knew that I knew who she was . He has known me long enough to know when I'm "funnin'"

Speaking of fun, Nick, have you made progress on remodeling your house? It's been a long time since we've seen photos. -- Russ

I can't remember when I did post some photos , so here are some of the outside . The inside is mostly finished and we hope to move in soon . I just need to clear it out of all the "stuff" that has accumulated over the years .
