Many of these tractors sent to the UK in the 1st WW most went to the Farming community used by the newly formed
"Land Girls" and others after WD trials to the front lines in France .The War Department had some modifications and minor alterations which included heavy duty wheels front and rear - chain guards - a non adjustable width to the front track.the Titan Tractor proved to be a reliable piece of equipment used by the army and airforce.

The heavy duty type wheels (WD type ) had an inner rims and traction type plates (strakes) the fronts where normally the cast type with a centre band which enabled the tractor to travel on roads The cast type being available for a Heavy duty type wheel although other options were available I went for the cast one The Grandt Line one being the right size and saved me a headache !
The Chassis a headache I could have done without (8 attempts ) was Evergreen H column bent with the use of LEGO template and a hair dryer - Fuel and water tank are from acrylic rod

Cool project!
Did you bend the H column by hand to fit into the jig, then use heat to set it? Or did you heat it, and then bend it to fit the jig?
Barney
that is a fantastic bending jig! very innovative! The Titan is also a great project! We have thousands of them rotting away in Idaho. There is a new interactive Museum coming to Boise it's called JUMP and it the personal collection of J.R.Simplot, the name may not roll off the tongue for most people but good Ol J.R is Mr. Idaho, he's the man behind the World famous frozen French fry, he made it possible for Ray Kroc to build McDonald's empire.
I have seen some of his restored collection and they as perfect as when they rolled off the assembly line
Great start, keep the pictures coming

Outstanding wheels. -- Russ
Its all good. That use of Lego's is inspired!
Can I book a lesson on how you built those wheels in March, Barney
That "silver" last year did really irritate you , didn't it ;D
with good reason
Ray - a bit of heat on the H columns at the first stage and they were rolled over a piece of 1in tube to get a rough shape then put in the "LEGO BENDER" with plenty of heat then left for a bit to set in the bender - when they were removed they finely came to the shape I required and a shout of "Eureka" was herd around the neighbourhood followed by "by jove I think he's done it" to end the night a nice pint of liquid refreshment the sort that goes to all parts of ones body
Barney
its the little things in life they please me !!
Then, as I understand it, an adult beverage is an integral part of the process .... -- Russ
A rolling chassis at last - chain guards fitted - the War Department had no faith in good old
simple engineering and specified chain guards should be fitted and uprated wheels on the military version - went for the spoked front wheels in the end but have to handle carefully spokes keep bending - water tank (acrylic rod trial fit)

Very clean construction!
Nice work!
Ditto and ditto.
You're building two models? Are you quite mad?
Russ
Barney, Excellent models (this one and your other thread too).
Heating and bending styrene is something I have very limited experience with and most of that has been less than successful. Can you expand a little on "a bit of heat" and "plenty of heat" - what do you use for heat source? candle, heat gun, hot water, lightbulb?
Bill - before I started the heat I rolled the H beam over some 3/4in tube to get the curve started then used an hair drier for a heat source in this case on the H beams - close gives you plenty of heat - move it away a bit and it becomes less - I tried it on channel first but it just twisted but the H beam has more strength in it but the back flange has to be cut off after cooling in the jig - it was all experiment with a little bit of hope ! and much swearing but it did the trick in the end - I found Plastuct not very good seemed brittle - but the evergreen much softer - I also tried a tube /rod type bender (often used as a rail bender) made it out of LEGO using 3 wheels a bit of heat again from the hair dryer and the results were good but not to good for an upward bend on the Titan tractor - better used just for a bend in a chassis - I hope it all makes a bit of sense I had many failures just for just a simple job as I thought at the beginning
Barney
A good example of a bender is on the KB Scale narrow gauge site http://www.kbscale.com/track-parts.html look under RB01 Bender I just made it bigger in Lego
Thanks Barney. I had tried a heat gun on "low" and held at a distance but it was much too hot. Hot water was so-so. Holding over an electric stove element was painful and hard to control. I like your use of Legos and your Lego tube bender is another fine example of that. Thanks.
I like lot of this construction.
A short update on the build - Mudguards now fitted + Transmission /gear box some detailing with Tichy & Grandt Line bolts and Nuts

Simply lovely styrene work.
AN ATEMPT TO SEND A PHOTO WITH NO Fotki (http://rsz_dsc_6968.jpg)
Well that did not work - no Photo -back to the drawing board
Try again
EUREKA - by jove I think I'v cracked it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Barney
just trying one more
I hope that will please Mr Russ and I hope I can remember how to do it !
Barney
And thanks Bill for all the help
Is that a steam tractor or some kind of early diesel?
Thank you for taking the trouble to post those photos the hard way! --Russ
Ray thats the one Im building - its a Paraffin (Kerosene) 4 stroke engine -petrol is used to start it
The tank at the front is the radiator just loads of water does the cooling - crude but it worked !
Barney
Barney
I love the picture of the restored Titan, and of course your beautiful work so far, do you need white decals? I can print you white ones I just need the art work. So if you or some will send me the artwork I will print them for you, just send it via email.
Gil
Wow...and it's not O.D.! ...oh how will you ever get your mind around painting it!? :D :P
Yes that is the Titan tractor I'm building - but no thats not the colour - it will be in military colours (sorry to disappoint you all) so a new batch of Humbrol Kaki and olive drab is on the way + the normal WD plates
a couple of update pics showing the steering gear and a rear shot of the controls and wooden deck all awaiting final detailing for the rivet counters !
Barney
Lovely.
Rear end showing tow bar supports
last one wrong photo should be this one
bigger I think complete with dogs hair !
Looks great!
Really like what I'm seeing here, can almost smell the freshly cut styrene and curing glue ;).
Now, I was definitely shocked to read it's going to be OD/Khaki :o.
Keep up the great work and keep us posted on progress.
Ta.
Edit. Was inspired enough by this build to pull out my stalled C-65 crawler and re-evaluate how to recommence the build. Cheers
Engine nearly done -More nuts / bolts and plenty of brackets /control levers to be fitted when engine fitted in chassis - spark plug leads to be fitted last after painting
Barney
Satisfactory. -- Russ
Thats cool!
I love the outside tappet rockers and pushrods.
Mj
Very nice!
Engine now fitted in chassis
Air cleaner trial fit and engine mounting brackets now in place
Fly wheel adjusted to leave clearance for belt pulley (when fitted)
Barney
other side
Awesome!
Well, let's not get carried away; he hasn't painted it yet. -- Russ
Update on the Titan - Cooling hoses top and bottom no hose clips yet ! now and gear cover
Gone for a Compressor trailer shot of chassis /wheels/air tanks engine and compressor
Radiator componentes
Very nice!
Pictures are much better too - new camera?
What would the compressor be used for?
I've seen ones like this used for large sandblasters.
-Marty
Adequate. -- Russ
Marty - Found photos of the Royal Flying Core using one of these compressors by a workshop on a small airfield in France 1918
must have been for general workshop use.
Same old camera just resized "by order of the management " but I still miss my old faithful FOTKI !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Barney
Stunning!
When you buy Legos for this stuff, is there a particular set you use?
Ray - I normally buy just the LEGO blocks a selection of sizes of white ones a bucket full from a Lego shop works out at about £10:00 my Grandson had a visit to Lego Land (near Windsor) and they sold small buckets (about the size of family ice cream tub)
for £4:00 and thats how many you can cram in yourself - there are also LEGO suppliers on line who sell just the blocks - i did once buy a LEGO box with a selection of bits - the rest are just rescued from car boot sales
Barney
Lovely work, Barney!
Graet work as alway, Barney. Waiting to see it painted.
For a look at more kinds of Lego pieces, check out http://www.finescalerr.com/smf/index.php?topic=2602.0
A bit of finishing and its in the paint shop
Just replaced the missing bolt on compressor air tank - compressor roof only placed on to aid paint job and brass seat needs a little fettling !!
and on and on we go !!!
Barney
Fettle away but the model looks quite adequate even now. -- Russ
Super nice modeling, Barney.
Bill M.
A joy to behold even in unpainted form!
Finished at last
Barney
Finished and returned from the Euro show after 250 miles of rain - fog and road works
Barney
more
Whoa!!!! That is awesome!
Not too bad for a superb model and diorama. -- Russ
Very impressive models, Barney.
Just lovely! Very!
Now it needs an old barn behind it!
Marty
Very well done!
Are you really sure that's the model you described before? Looks pretty darn good!
Volker
Congrats on the Gold at Euro!
Somehow I missed the finish. Great work Barney, and congratulations!
That's all? Just a lousy gold medal? They cheated you. You deserve more. Perhaps a dozen beautiful girls in thong bikinis, each eager to cater to your every whim might be a more appropriate reward. Or at least a jar of chicken fat. -- Russ
Thanks everyone - Just the thought of "thongs and bikinis" could damage your health !!!
Barney
The five pages of this project are incredible!!!!!!! Allan
I agree with all comments. Fantastic modeling and research!
My only question is why you did not add "tracks" in the soil on the base. It appears that the entire rig was dropped into the otherwise well-done scene.
Of course, then one could wonder where the figure of the driver is....
OK - I'll just go away quietly now.
Dave
The tractor has obviously been abandoned long enough for the track marks to disappear.
Congrats on the well-deserved win!
Sorted a better photo out (well I think so) done in natural daylight - still not happy with the "orange rust" I don't really think it would be in service with this amount of rust - Lawton has got it right "abandoned" and properly waiting for the Auctioneer to put a lot number on it with a note "Ex WD equipment for sale" Scenery in this class for the competition states scenery if any should be kept to a minimum and will not be taken into account and one figure is an option not that anyone seems to take note of this rule and rust and dust appears to be "The Trend"at the moment not that I agree with it after reading many articles and listening to many army personnel who still say a Vehicle becomes part of your kit ! any one else out there who can comment on the condition of army vehicles in service.
Myself I feel I have been forced into "The Trend" (for this the only competition I enter gives me something to aim for and at least able to complete one model) but I must add I still enjoy my Hobby
