The pencils do give us another tool in our arsenal. They allow us to do fine details that would be more difficult otherwise. What is even better is that they require no set-up or clean-up and have a huge variety of colors to work with. I'll have two or three sitting there so my streaks are not just one color, but can be a combination of several together. Also, you can change the width and character of a line with pressure, a simple piece of sandpaper or even touching the pencil to your tongue.

Try them, they are cheap and easy.
