Several of you (okay....maybe one or two) have wondered about the slow progress on the Lumber Stacker.
It got sidetracked for a little "figure" project. Long story short: Virgil Suarez ("Damn Cranky", who posts
here from time to time) built a small 1:25th scale sceniced base and had an idea that he would send it
around the country to 4 other car modelers, who would add something of their choice to the base and
forward it to the next guy. No rules, no restriction, no-holds-barred. I got it last, and I'll be delivering
it back to Virgil at the Birmingham Show (...model cars...) at the end of this month.
This doesn't really relate to anything here, but my part includes a couple of figures
that I thought maybe you'd like to see.
The first figure started with legs & hips from a 1/25th scale Tamiya "Campus Friends" figure and a
Preiser torso, all repositioned and pinned together:
(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimages32.fotki.com%2Fv1092%2Fphotos%2F5%2F15405%2F8451252%2F022-vi.jpg&hash=a7d6583c526d87079ffc00eb87eef387a8f124e5)
Next came the arms (Tamiya) and head (Preiser):
(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimages51.fotki.com%2Fv750%2Fphotos%2F5%2F15405%2F8451252%2F023-vi.jpg&hash=d5c62d8d3bbb473d0e02aa7499b69af83c641259)
With some automotive body putty and glue-soaked tissue paper, the figure started to take shape:
(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimages28.fotki.com%2Fv999%2Fphotos%2F5%2F15405%2F8451252%2F025-vi.jpg&hash=e44211e2a727330a938761097d6d0d99c57a76e7)
With a few more tissue paper details & paint, the figure is just about done. There will be
another figure operating the clasp (that's all I can say right now):
(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimages109.fotki.com%2Fv783%2Fphotos%2F5%2F15405%2F8451252%2F029-vi.jpg&hash=1ed6bbaebc4a6cadd37bbd26359d364fc6c43d1b)
It's part of a larger scene so the figure isn't really super-detailed, but the idea will be there.
I can't show the rest of the diorama (Virgil might be lurking) but if you're interested I'll
post more pictures and a better history after the Birmingham show.
(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimages47.fotki.com%2Fv1590%2Fphotos%2F5%2F15405%2F8451252%2F028-vi.jpg&hash=f79ad580cce4a6c14ab44538ae475da63fabd901)
Nice little concept happening between a couple of modelling friends. I'll look forward to the finished scene Ken.
Interesting figure pose...damn tissue paper.
Cheers,
Dan
Damn that Cranky Toad Salter!....... ;) ;D
A very cool idea on the dio.
.....and "interesting" start on your figure ;) ;D

What's up , Mr. Morrow , did you get lost looking for the Gents and found yourself here ? !
I notice you joined sometime ago and yet this is the first time you have spoken . Cat got your tongue or something? However, I'm glad to see you are still around and causing trouble .
Phoned anyone up at 4 am recently ?
Your nemesis , Nick
Sure, blame it on me. All I was trying to do was get an original piece built by some extremely talented builders without letting them catch on it would be coming back to me!!! ;D ;D ;D
Of course, the torture has been on me because it's been gone for almost a year and I have NO IDEA what you guys have done to it. Last time I saw it it looked like this:
(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimages17.fotki.com%2Fv295%2Fphotos%2F4%2F684514%2F7560731%2FIMG_0004-vi.jpg%3F1266038339&hash=db71687eea6d26dfe397722ab98013ab0e75b3b1)

I have no idea how these figures you are building fit into the scene, but I am sure as heck anxious to be WOWED by what you guys have done.
Hey Ken, the girl taking off her top... is this what you call Model Porn?? look's like a C cup to me. ;) Craig
Now I am really curious as what the h*ll is going to be happening in this scene!
Marc
You can imagine how I feel. I have no idea what these guys have done to the scene, but I'm anxious as heck. Ken is bringing it down to the Alabama Show in just a matter of days.
The diorama base itself is quite evocative... Now you've got us all anxious to see the outcome.
Paul
Who are the other contributors to the project?
Please do post pics when you get it back and get a chance. Have fun at the show.

Who are the other contributors to the project?
In their order of receiving the diorama:
1) Jim Fernandez (Utah). He set the initial bar with an really creative direction.
2) Dave Roehrle (PA)
3) Narayan Khandekar (MA)
4) Mike Napoleon (NJ)
5) Me.
The first four guys are some of the most creative diorama builders in the automotive hobby.
I'll certainly post some finished pictures. When you see them you'll realize just where Jim's
imagination took this project........
Oh, the teasing is killing me, but luckily I will be seeing it in person for the first time at the BAMA show. Not only that, but the other treat is going to be seeing BAD PENNY, Hollywood Jim's Steampunk masterpiece.
Cranky -
I hope there will be photos of the diorama, and other highlites of the show.
Especially the BAD PENNY.
Carlo
Not to turn this into a Model Car site, but since Carlo asked............
Here's the "Bad Penny" by Jim Fernandez, a Steam-Punk 1/25th-scale '49 Merc:
(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimages45.fotki.com%2Fv1421%2Fphotos%2F9%2F985873%2F7023182%2FA-vi.jpg&hash=504da954a17778e7fba0a8dde175ffae4e2ae4bd)
The copper finish on the plastic is amazing. Jim sent the diorama (BP powering
a pipe organ) to me to bring to some of the East Coast model car shows:
(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimages18.fotki.com%2Fv437%2Fphotos%2F1%2F15405%2F5766739%2FP1200001-vi.jpg&hash=81df390d7dcb405b09d04370f561093934a09540)
For the In-Progress photos, I've taken the liberty of posting a link to Jim's
Fotki album. This is quite a piece of work...........

We now return you to our regularly scheduled program.
It's the kind of model that one day when one of us wins the lotto and opens a model museum, this one will be a great showcase.
It's wonderful to be involved in a build like this, even if we are only watching over the builder's shoulder.
Hugely anxious to see the finished "conglomeration". Ken's assessment of the talent chosen is spot on.
Yes, yes very nice but can we please concentrate on the job in hand ..... lets see some progress on the stacker ;D

Duly noted, Gordon. I'm chomping to get back at it, too.
After Birmingham (the first weekend in March) I'll be back at it and won't stop 'til it's done!
Ken -
For a newbie here, what is this show in Birmingham, AL?
Is there online coverage?
Carlo
Hi, Carlo:
I go back-and-forth between model cars and model railroading, with a lot of overlap. The Birmingham (Alabama) show is an annual Model Car "Popular Vote" show/contest. It usually attracts about 250 models and the awards include the "Top 15" (the 15 models with the highest popular vote), "Best in Show" (highest vote getter) plus a couple of private awards. There's no on-line covereage per se, but I (and many others) post photos in Fotki, etc. or on the various mode car forums. Here's my limited-coverage album from last year, which includes a couple of side trips along the way:
http://public.fotki.com/khamilton/models/model_shows/birmingham-2009/
FYI: The largest model car show in the country is "NNL East", held in Parsippany, NJ. It attracts about 1800 models annually. Here's a small taste of that show:
http://public.fotki.com/khamilton/models/model_shows/nnl-east-2009/
Feel free to browse through any of my other albums as well..............
Regards,
Ken
Hey Ken, since Parsippany is not too far from I would love to go to this show if it being held again this year, do you have any info about upcoming events? Thanks Pat
Here you go, Pat.
Hope you can make it.............

We interrupt the serious business of model building on this Forum to interject the finished
"Group Project Diorama" that started this thread. As you may recall, Virgil "Damn Cranky"
Suarez build a truck-display diorama and roped five other auto diorama builders into adding
something to it and passing it along to the next guy. No restrictions or rules.
Here's how it started:
(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimages41.fotki.com%2Fv195%2Fphotos%2F5%2F15405%2F8451252%2FIMG_0001vi-vi.jpg&hash=b0d8ff4ee4cfe565998cd0bdcc0401387a96aedf)
And here's how it ended up:
(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimages38.fotki.com%2Fv266%2Fphotos%2F5%2F15405%2F8451252%2FP2270016-vi.jpg&hash=a76d10ac397f9bbb214a843268e9f2672affe02b)
Jim Fernandez in Utah was the first one to get the diorama, and he came up with the low-budget,
horror, B-movie idea that the rest of us ran with, and added additional details to, as it went along.
(https://www.finescalerr.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimages17.fotki.com%2Fv274%2Fphotos%2F5%2F15405%2F8451252%2FP2270006-vi.jpg&hash=9616563a458723d8704c4576228fc26ff7099025)

Okay - it's not the most serious model ever built, but it sure was fun!
Sorry for being so OT, but I thought some of you might get a chuckle out of this......
Oh - if you'd like to see more pictures, here's a link:

Plan 9 all over again!
That's great...not even anywhere close to what I could even have thought. very creative. I like the way virgils base was used as a literal part of a larger scene....definitely creative thinking.
BTW... I don't think it's OT at all. Good, creative and interesting modelbuilding is never OT,.... and if anyone here bitches about it....you can point out the train tracks in the fake backdrop image ;D ;D)
Thanks for posting this.

Cool! Very creative!
I did a Danny Thomas when I saw Ken's milk crate chair!
For those to young to remember, Milk or water would come out of his nose when he heard somthing very funny!
That is a classic chair!
Gil
Still younger than Younger, but old enough to remember ; = )
If anything belongs on this asylum for lunatics, that diorama does. -- Russ
It's mind blowing in person. There are so many great details. Those boys did a great job!
Bitchin!
Really cool to see a collaborative effort!

That's wonderful... not at all what I expected. Very creative result...
Your chair looks slightly less than comfortable Ken... guess we know who got the short straw. ;)
