good morning yes, SouthCreek Road 1-35n9.
South Creek is a fairly unspectacular creek that empties into a coastal lagoon close to where I live, I like it soi will honour it and use it for this travelling module, all eyes towards South Creek.
this is a full-size mock-up complete with the backdrop.South Creek is a small community with a loco service area surrounded by swamp[black areas].the small track passes through the front and then returns behind the backdrop. The whole display comes apart that is there is a bottom level and a detachable top level.i have tricks and mini dioramas planned and of course the whole range of materials usually about 90 % scratch build time with extra locos 12 months.
cheers.

this looks like it will be fun
oh yes.
As I look at the "skyline" I wonder whether one of the two "gables" on the right hand side could turn 90-degrees to add variation. I predict this new undertaking will be the bee's knees. -- Russ
hi, Russ, that is the two of us having a chat in the model do you want to drive or just be the boss I don't care.
do you mean turning the roof between the 2 towers so it is facing out?interesting I have not tried that, as usual, these things change.so the range of business-large building left mixed Asian style turning to the right loco watering hole the other side of the alley is a door and next to that is a tooth doctor.the front tower right has an awning under the awning is a vending machine .notice that this whole scene is framed in a swamp, not just black edged.looking at the shot the back scene is too high no worries as with Dapto the back scene is the lid, but this time better proportioned running as a landscape setting.
cheers
I don't want to be the driver or the boss. I want to be the clarinetist.
I made the suggestion about the roofline to get you thinking rather than offer a specific idea. Now that you're thinking I suspect you'll come up with a better idea than I ever could.
Russ
As I have already mentioned before ... I like small, portable layouts - and I like your new arrangement: good start!
One of the great things about foam core is that you can quickly whip up an idea, set it where you see it every time you walk past, and let the idea ferment until it matures. In the past, I've used cereal boxes and assorted other containers from the kitchen to give an quick impression of how a scene might look even before getting out the cardboard and tape.
Hi Russ Gerald and Lawton.
yes, i also like cardboard and leaving the mock-up around so the idea grows.at the moment I am looking at base materials and my option is that seeing that I am putting in the effort you should use quality.in the past I have been able to source offcuts of marine ply and the supplier has been able to cut it for me.i have since moved and my options have changed now all I can get is big sheets of ply or what we call medium density board -a bit like compressed cardboard very common and most things seem to be made with it.will I risk using the common board or continue trying to find suitable plywood?
Russ, you are very lucky being able to be to play the clarinet amazing sound and emotions myself no instruments but part of my dream is to live near the sea and model build.
cheers
Find yourself a local cabinetmaker. My shop threw loads of the stuff out even with my harping on the staff to use it like they were the ones paying for it. Your local shop might be willing to sell you a sheet and break it down into smaller pieces for a small fee. I used to sell sheet stock cutoffs by the square foot at times just to get it out of the building into something other then the trash bin.
Also do a search for Midwest model lumber or Revel. Michael's and other craft stores sell from 1/64" thick up to 1/2" or more in 12" X 24" sizes and larger pieces can be found on eBay.
hi Lawton.
I have got it sorted I have got myself so great plywood, I think you would call it veneer.love the stuff great for all sorts of precision woodworking jobs.I love to go shopping at Michels when I am in the midwest but 14 hours across the Pacific Sydney- LA is a bit much for plywood .thanks all the same and I will check them out online.
cheers
You could use the plywood to build a yacht. Then you could sail from Australia to the U.S. whenever you want and build models on the way. -- Russ
Some of the Asian plywoods used by cabinet shops as a secondary wood are nearly as good quality as the Baltic Birch and the hobby plywood at Micheal's. If you have the Australian equivalent of Lowe's in the US or B&Q in the UK they should stock it. Remember: more plies mean a better quality plywood. I still use a 20mm 11 ply Luaun plywood from Malaysia for carcasses of cabinets I make for friends in my retirement and 12mm for drawer boxes in them which I get at my local big box lumber yard and they break it down into smaller pieces for me at little cost.
On a humorous note I have a mock up of an oil dealer on the RR in the basement that is made from oatmeal boxes that has been there so long that my friends have named it Quaker Oil.

funny many years ago I was designing yachts for around the world adventures now unless there are at least 80 thousand tons under the keel forget it.too many pirates for one thing.
Lawton, you are a person after my own heart plywood to plywood.I go to specialist suppliers and buy their offcuts they usually have a variety and will cut to a cutting list.we don't get Baltic Birch but it is all Asian veneers, a lot of it from dubious sources I am familiar with Luaun as a common variety and the more exotic being Fijian hardwood.I like it for being strong, light, good edge cutting properties and very stable with a whole range of paints and resins not like MDF.
this is the base for South Creek Road-bottom layer 12 mm top layer 3 mm.

oatmeal boxes and #10 tin cans were the "craftsman kits" of the '50s.
You are going to tell me there are better materials out there then cereal boxes and tin cans? ;D
the "finescale" version encouraged the wrap of construction paper to lend the realistic effect.

You are going to fit in well with this group.

not to sidetrack, but reinforce the value of imagination and executing things with common materials as being some of the core values of a true modeler, I reference this put up recently by my favorite blogger: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/E._L._Moore
hi all.
I have become a bit impatient and sick of cardboard cutouts soi have made a start, left foreground .this is a small wier sort of structure that acts as a holding point for the big pipe either going or coming.this week I will get the epoxy resin and do the water ,slime green of course cheers.

Nice start! What are you using for the bricks?
hi Ray how are you doing for the bricks I use a product made Juweela out of Germany 1-35 or 1-32 scale.they are individually glued down with white glue the motar is Hydrocal.cheers
Adequate so far. Keep going. -- Russ
I enjoy this type of building as one section encourages further production, rather than having everything in an unfinished state thus retarding any incentive to get "over the hump".
great finishes and textures in one condensed area.
hi .
yes I have set pieces in mind I treat them as separate dioramas and then combine them on the motherboard.one of the tricks is to make the motherboard neat and accurate so when you add the pieces there is a seamless fit-well that is the idear.also with these very small large-scale displays the more you can take off the better, pack it somewhere around the motherboard an example of this is the space over the backtrack will be used for the light valance.as for the lights, i have been collecting different styles of directional mini display LEDS I will give them a go.
anyway happy Christmas everybody and I hope that you get a bit of hobby stuff under the tree this Christmas.
cheers
hi all.
well, that was Christmas done and dusted.this little piece is my latest section for South Creek Road you can see where it fits.card and plaster, hand laid bricks, mainly watercolour finishes.it will be glued in place and the resin water added when all the sections are in place.usually, this is the base level of detail.
cheers kim.

I agree. Looking good and i'm looking forward to seeing more!
I like the "something's happening under the ground" atmosphere.
Q: should we be concerned about the track radius or has that been handled?
following with keen interest!
I asked about the track radius and Kim assures me it will be no problem. -- Russ
hi, all thank you for your interest.
I have run one of my little critters for 2 hours on the track -no problem the only thing that I have noticed that the tight radius collects more dirt also low speed helps too much and it will fly off.yesterday I thought of Ikea you know the useful chain of shops that cater to your house details just buy the look and slot it in but in this case, my little bits just make them and then slot it into your diorama.
cheers, Kim.

this is a very helpful idea. cannot count how many layouts I've started in a lifetime that were binned because they became too overwhelming to see any appreciable result. all hit dead spots which, for whatever the variety of excuses, kept me from forward momentum.
Some of you guys may not have any idea how many small layouts, structures, locos, and railroad cars Kim has built. He sent me an article back in 1994 about a little 1:32 scale narrow gauge switching diorama and it impressed everyone who bothered to look at it. Then, a few years later, he send another article about another small layout. Nearly everything was scratchbuilt. And look at the projects he's posted here over the past several years. Kim has this stuff down to a science. -- Russ

Prove it . Show us some pictures we may have not seen .
I am starting back doing some modelling after a significant period of inactivity , but I am slightly unfocused as to what to do , so anything to give me a bit of inspiration would be useful . I have already started looking at Marcel's stuff again in earnest but I need more .
So chop chop , Russ , push those girls off your lap and do something useful and give us some inspiration.
Nick
taking the above advice, and not wanting to further sidetrack this thread, I have searched and brought several threads back to page 1 so everyone can enjoy them.
Nick, I thought you were working on a mining tram or something before your hiatus. (Not the one with the brick building that I published but the one you showed us here.) Did you finish that project? If not, maybe you could. If you completed it, stop cavorting with those girls I sent you and post some photos, first of the diorama/layout and second of the girls.
Or just do a very small (maybe 1 foot square) Marcel thing, anything so we can cheer you on to completion.
By the way, the articles Kim sent were before it was feasible to go all digital so I have no scanned images or PDFs to share. My first digitally stored publication goes back August 1998 (one magazine), then three or four from 1999. After that I have PDFs of everything.
Russ
morning all.
about 18 years ago I built this signal cabin 1/32 scale it all works and was used to work a signal layout mechanically. 100 percent scratch built using just a piercing saw knife and files, materials brass and wood sorry I bought the chain.after this I went into narrow gauge the first effort was No Hope Coast that was published in the Narrow Gauge and Short Line Gavette then i really could not care anymore.
really just remember that your expensive hobby paints have a limited life so use them or lose them.
with Russ, we all would have to agree that he has been always a really positive personality in an otherwise mostly dull hobby.
cheers Kim.

hi all.
now back to South Creek RD after that diversion into the past.
what I have been working on of late is the landscape and the hard urban environment that will be the foundation of the 1 st level but first, i had to make sure that it fitted into my trusty blue carry on suitcase, just fits snug.
the square is also been roughed in concrete asphalt is the base still a mess but this is the undercoat, next a bit more detail and a start on the buildings.

Since I flew with my own model train in hand luggage I know the expression in the face of the inspectors. Please open this I have to see, then comes from the mouth. Everything with something not at the last moment, to check in.
hi, Helmut how are you doing nice to hear from you.
in my last group of photos, some of the brickwork was bothering me so out I came.my work has mainly been directed at concrete and asphalt both I find difficult, I really like the asphalt in Cahill expressway.i feel I am getting somewhere with the concrete but the asphalt is another thing I just keep trying.
in one of the photos, you can see the back scene board onto that I will glue the back scene this is also the top of the box-cheers Kim.

That's just not something that would fit into this great forum, like your excellent work shown here. There are now 3 buttons on my model now, where visitors can even start actions in the model.

Barney
I like the layout of things so the track is not right up on the front of the benchwork.
hi all .Asphalt I have had a look at the article by Narayan great stuff using his approach of hand-laid brick pavements and moving asphalt looks great this approach now seems to be common.I had a good look at my asphalt and I have come to the conclusion that the whole scene is too bust there are just too many textures fighting for attention so I remembered an old approach that I have used I will share it in alter post but it has calmed the whole scene down.
cheers kim

The only thing that looks "off" to me is the way the water comes over those rectangular slabs in the first photo. It doesn't appear natural.
hi Charles and Ray.
yes, those pads foundations for floating objects may be the photo helps.
but s-t, I will most likely have to redo all the resin water on the right side the bottom has not dried so it is still really gooey after 4 days.I most likely did not mix it properly.it has happened before it is usually a mess but it gives me the opportunity to change anything.
cheers

Ah, now I see.
Too bad about having to redo the resin.
Have you ever tried Liquitex medium viscosity acrylic gloss medium and then a couple of applications of varnish? According to Don McKenney, a very good modeler, Liquitex cleans up with water, produces no toxic fumes, doesn't smell bad, dries fairly quickly, and looks good. I don't have a decent image to post even though I spent several minutes looking up this information. -- Russ
Kim It looks like you really nailed the asphalt. This is really nice to see coming together.
hi, thanks for your comments.
I just go to show that rarely I get it first go sometimes it takes a lot of goes no worries.one thing I might get rid of that barge I have something else in mind.
cheers
I think the "go" and then "change" all contribute to the fabric of your creations.
oh ... and in mine eyes, the "new" asphalt looks too in comparison with the other textures. but I have confidence the road crew will be along shortly with their hammers and such ...
good afternoon all.
South Creek is rising from the paper and generally, I am very pleased by it all so far macro photography also helps is amazing how much a camera sees, it seems to cut through the crap.the resin stuff up well yes I had to rip it all up I called the manufacture and it turned out that batch was old and should never be sold.I got some new stuff did a sample no problems in many ways it was good as i got rid of the barge.in the last couple of weeks i have done some work on my crawler locomative.this is a rework of a old loco with a more airbrushed finish, macro really shows up the dust the only thing that i dont like is the brake wheel too big.more walls have been added the right hand one is nearly finished in green water clour wet and dry sandpaper and markers.the distant shots are with the back board i place remember there is another story to go,a lighting valance will be attached ,it is also the top of the box.
cheers kim.

beautiful addition to the "industrial waterfront".
Where else would Russ get his Top Hat to wear as he drives the loco?
yes, there is a little shopping lane, alley, there will be buildings on both sides.my original idea was to have all retail but the contrast between light industrial and retail was just too tempting.

hi, all.i also like the tunnel effect but in that picture, there was that orange strip of metal, looking at it I really did not like it here is the next solution.i have a list of possible businesses but looking at it I feel all the businesses should be on one side of the street so the hat shop might be in for a bit of a move soon.

great addition the roof & tilt windows.
Yes, the back step I think I have lost it the size of this building is 150 mm -6 inches high, 125 mm -5 inches wide and 100 mm-4 inches wide.this style of weatherboard or wooden cladding reminds me of a lot of old-style Australian buildings most long gone usually the maintenance gets them, in the end, .imagine how much a 1-1 building of this style would be worth in San Francisco.
cheers
Great job! Amazing how much beauty there can be in industrial decay.

this layout is reminding me of the star trek clear, 3 tier, chessboard. movement is possible in the X, Y, & Z axises (I had to look it up!)
would it be too bold, or too soon, to request an over-all photo to gain visual perspective? thanks.

good morning thank you all for your interest here is an overview from the basic board to all the bits so far.the base is 135 mm high or 5and one half inches high.the vacant bit of real estate on the right is where Bev's hats are going this area will not be as easy as the left side.i have used this contrast trick before I like it-dirty oil barrels to nice clean hats.the window behind the porch adds another dimension with the view through into the back also the striping weathering is an interior design trick to add more vertical movement, love these tricks more to come.the whole display is a custom kit that is based on 3 permanent walls-the 2 side walls and the centre divider.these walls are more protectors for travel and take the weight of the top of the box -the back scene .
cheers kim.

very nice and already the unique mood can be seen.
great looking retaining wall.
any chance of a 7 3/8, grey, fedora in stock?
Another beautiful diorama shaping up. You might consider putting some kind of warning signs in front of Val's hats to avoid Val's splats. -- Russ
good idea about the Val's splats.
I am really loving this diorama! What a great build!
and very helpful for perspective to see its entirety. certainly packing a wallop of detail and views into a manageable space. thank you for sharing with us.
hi, all thank you for the great comments.looking at it now I feel I can get a bit more out of it especially around Val's hats and that complex what I am looking for is the feeling of space.while I am thinking about it I will work on the small whalf scene in front or the new big green wall.at the moment including the baseboard there are 10 pieces .to get away from the architectural side of it all I have bought another German mini trains mechanism these work really well and a very reliable slow speed is possible[9 mm gauge] it will be fun to see what it ends up looking like.
cheers kim
Kim, remember the first 1:23n2 diorama article you sent me back in 1993 or 1994? And then a second a few years later. You must have build a dozen or more and every one is outstanding. You should be in some kind of hall of fame. -- Russ
maybe Russ but seriously there are so many great modellers around the world most have their own signatures.i have included an illustration from Japan that I find inspirational.amazing perspective and wonderful skill using watercolours.

Kim, That is a nice watercolor.
And, my hat's off to you for your latest arrangement of your diorama. In fact, I think I see it peeking out behind the first row of hats in Val's window :)
That painting is excellent. Very cool.
hi, all poor Val really hates me now anyway I am sure it won't last long.in the last post I said I was not happy about the look of that area around the hat shop , I went to work and this is what came out of it now I am happy.it needs more work but at least the basic shape is there.the shape breaks down into 4 pieces for easy packing and assembly is by locator pieces glued onto the pieces.

Two nice additions: One to Kim's diorama and the other, an important addition to our cultural development. I think the last time I saw or heard Jimmy Durante sing Ink-a-dink-a-doo was when I was about nine years old! -- Russ
Beautiful work. I especially like the color and weathering of the wooden walkway (Doorstep? Porch?) It looks very natural and authentic.
I had a look at Jimmy quite a performer great period for stars.Ray the finish on the wooden floor is Sepia watercolour highlighted with watercolour pencils.the floor is hand laid thin wood that I have been buying. It is very thin ply much thinner than basswood, I get it in big sheets from craft shops. I use it for the sidings-weatherboard just cut it to size with a craft knife no fluff I prefer it over basswood.
my material list is.
glues-white wood glue, 5-minute epoxy and zap a gap medium.
paints -watercolour and mainly AK interactive in dropper bottle no wastage and good for airbrushes.some powders pencils and markers
wood-thin ply and custom size basswood.
plastic- not much Evergreen they are getting expensive if possible I like slaters and a European company Maquett.
roofing-Slaters corrugated sheets
metals-pretty much everything.
paper -both illustration paper and boards expensive but you can get a lot of stuff out of one sheet to build South Creek Road I use 2 sheets of board and one sheet of paper.I waste about 30 percent.
plaster -Hydrocol.
cheers kim

and, Kim, if I am not asking something too personal, what is your background which allows you to create such things?
I have seen many models built by gifted modelers over the years, but your work has a touch all apart.
thank you for the inspiration.
not at all my background is simple I have been designing and building items since a very young age.my professional life was a lie but kept at it because it gave me time to build my own stuff.i have been lucky enough over the years to have had very good teachers in both art, crafts and design, having a business sense also is a big help
I am now retired and can now have a lifestyle based on building 3 d displays. hopefully, you all have good health in retirement and find inside yourselves the energy to do what you have always wanted.

funny it just goes to show the vast difference of retail model accessories.for years I built is 1/32 scale great scale and changed to 1/35 a few years ago South Creek Road is built to 1/35 scale.buying figures, for example, are hopeless a lot are too big and most are too small so I use Preiser 1/32 scale I feel they fit perfectly.

lights for South Creek Road.
I need really good lighting but I cant use all the usual methods, in fact, most of the solutions I didn't like much so I design and fabricated my own.over the years I have built a lot of custom lighting set up and my latest version is part of that elevation. this version I really like -kit, very good daylight, no heat,12 volts, adjustable baffles for different conditions, light and a little adjustable flagpole at the front so you can display your personal details or make a miniature graphic for information-cheers

Hi Kim,

"Dörentrupper Sand and Tonwerke". (https://www.drehscheibe-online.de/foren/read.php?017,6157992,6158128#msg-6158128)
I like the new vertical element. helps the eye from "landing on the pavement". the trolley in the above link, maybe festooned with similar gay colors as the buildings and hauling a toaster rack car sunday excursion of sight see-ers perhaps on their way to the pub crawl, would add a really nice addition to the operation.
A satisfactory accoutrement. -- Russ
Kim, good to see some activity in the scene.
hi all just seen Helmuts link please help me before I fall over -very nice Helmut.i just need to know where to put the power unit but just the detail for the pick up is great. trolley poles have always looked good but tricky but this method of power collection is much better as the wires can be all over the place and still look good. as always thanks for the interest more to come cheers Kim
just a follow-on -what do you think the drum on the roof inside the cab was used for it seems to have a handle for winding.the loco proportions to me look perfect for Gn15.

That is the cutest little trolley I've ever seen!
Hi Kim, how can I help you?
The locomotives are self-built on a chassis of a lore.
The locomotives were operated with 220 volts of DC power.
As the driving line was interrupted at crossroads, there was this cable drum under the roof to drive over the road.
do you know something Helmut I think you should build it .i would be perfect in what 22.5 scale?i am sure that you would have a lot of stuff already, but seeing you are there what is that drum with a handle hanging off the ceiling used for?cheers
Hi Kim,
Yes, an incredibly attractive vehicle only as old as I have become, I can not build anything more I like and therefore concentrate on my monastery stud model.
On the cable drum with the crank you are looking for, an electric wire is wrapped which serves to power the locomotive when it has to cross a road. Because there is no wire on the roads.
I think for your layout this loco would be absolutely perfect.
hi
so it is what would call a power extension cord in the barrel very practical.i will most likely take bits of the design and use it on my model mu 9 mm power unit takes up a bit of room so everything is built around it.good detail of the power pick up her is another picture of a pole pickup nice but very fiddly
cheers

hi, all how are you all.
time for some more detail and an overall view of how the model is presented in its large-scale minimum space form. with the model, there is a little stand included that breaks down and fits inside the bag.when it is displayed on a table the overall height is 900 mm or 3 foot to the top of the light valance, from the floor to rail height id 1000 mm or 3 foot 4 inches. the lighting in the picture is using its own lights in a dark room.i have just done a trial pack and it all fits.there is still a lot of bits and pieces to do when I get to the stage of packing I will post some more pictures to show how it all fits.

thanks, everybody, watch this space there has been a size change I have had to cut 25 mm or 1 inch off its length. last night it fitted into the case but as I added more stuff I would not fit anymore.no worries I think it is for the best it does not take me long to cut it up and reglue.the right-hand side was a bit strange and with this size change it is a chance to make good.i like to look at the whole display, not just the model, after a hard look I think there can be improvements.i will take a picture and do another post cheers

my mum thinks I should have been in demolition I have to admit I do enjoy it.so the new width is 425 mm or 17 inches.to do all this I have to make good this side and change the back scene most likely about a weeks work this is with the design for the new side. tomorrow I will get the saw out cheers Kim
I had a completely different interpretation of the timeframe of the layout until Mr Blue and his 'oh-so-modern' hard hat came upon the scene. initially I assumed he was there for scale/ size reference, but now fear he has come to stay.
perhaps a trip to Val's for a chapeau change, and then into the "parlor" for a bit of ink, would soften his presence?
I envision a beret, horizontal blue & white stripe top, and some faded bell bottoms . . .
yep, te Barbarin has come to town, scale to ratio nope I will have no part of that thanks.

Most of us have enough trouble just building a diorama. You not only build it but engineer it to be portable and then figure out how to pack it without destroying all your work. I'm obviously out of my depth here .... -- Russ
I must take a moment to wax philosophical. my cousin caused my first interest in model railroading in the late 1950s when I was about 6 or 7. he was older and had an American Flyer rail empire in his basement. Lionel, he pointed out, was not realistic with its 3 rail system. I still have visions of the running commuter at the station platform and being allowed to put a few drops of oil in the engine so it could blow smoke rings.
anyway, I think I enjoy your modeling because it's not necessarily a "railroad model", or even dependent on a railroad, even though there is certainly much to allude to freight and commuter traffic coming and going. Particularly because it creates a vignette, slice of life, which not only tells a story, but invites the viewer to add his own ideas on what is, has, or might be, happening next.
all of the works I have seen produced by you continue to evoke this feeling. there are no "bookends", at least that I can see, that hold the viewer to only one conclusion, but rather urge additional action every time they are viewed.
I believe that is a real gift which many lifetime modelers never attain regardless of their technical savvy, electrical gimmicks, or graphic arts skills become perfected over time.
thank you for sharing your works!
thank out all very much.
with my ideas and the process, i have found what works best for me is to develop the first idea and refine that idea sometime 3 times. i don't try and complicate the process with trying to get repeated ideas. my ideas usually come in a visual form.in medieval times people with a lot of ideas or imagination were usually drowned at birth
there are a lot of pieces to ship and pack not just the model they are what i call the support items.they all fit into my little blue hard shell cabin bag
my list is
-baseboard thick 16 mm plywood.with all the terrane in place.
-back scene 4 mm plywood.painted clouds.
-stand 9 mm, varnished face.
-lights rig 3 pieces 2 specially fabricated pivots, brass aluminium and 4 mm plywood face painted.mix of yellow and white leds
-3 d items[model] packed in foam core and bubble wrap.
-separate detail items.
-2 power transformers 1 for the lights 1 for train control,12 volt
-1 train controller non- digital, simple.
-power board for the transformers.
-powerpoint adaptor for different countries.
-extension power lead
-and the last item an information card this will be placed up the flagpole on the lighting valance yet to be built.
I'm with Russ -- the fact that you not only create these gorgeous models, but also create ways to safely transport them, is staggering.
Kim,
you're an artist. In many ways. What a colourful and attracting item.
Cheers,

and there is one more item that I have to list before i forget
a little tool kit -2 screwdrivers and a universal pair of pliers.
and some glue, thin wire, spare screws and a black marker.

(see next post)
in the late '80s I attended a 3 day woodworking seminar given by Tage Frid. there were several workshops at the venue that weekend and on opening Friday night, the presenters gave a brief introduction about themselves.
during one particularly lengthy sculptor's speech, fate found me standing next to my idol. after about 10 minutes of particularly nonsensical rhetoric, Frid turned to me and said " 'artists' love talking about themselves".
made the whole weekend worthwhile!
You nailed it, Kim. In the art world, art is talk. -- Russ

Wow!
You really have an eye for little industrial engines. I remember some 1:32 models you built in the 1990s but there's a long gap between those and the stuff you're doing now. If you have any photos of previous locos, it might be fun to post them and see the reaction you get. -- Russ
hi everybody funny you should mention loco builders when I first started to read Finescaller years ago you were featuring a builder of shays in 1/32 scale I think he was Roger Rogerson great I was greatly inspired by his finishes. anyway, I have dug out one of my ancient locos kitbashed 1/32 n 20 all the rest can stay in the bin marked work in progress.
cheers.

beautiful little tea kettle with a cute behind!
I've never seen that one. Thanks!
The guys who built those 1:32 scale Shays and chain drives are Robert Stephens and Roger Russell. Stephens dropped out of the hobby around 1995, sort of disappeared around 1997 and, as I just discovered from a Google search, died in 2013.
Roger is in poor health but, between then and now, built three or four layouts in scales ranging from 1:64 (Sn3) to 1:32 (1n3). He also detailed or rebuilt some S and O scale locomotives and, if I recall correctly, a few years ago scratchbuilt a 1:32 scale Shay. I have no photos of the Shay. I published whatever photos Roger sent of his other models and layouts. I'll send him an e-mail and hope he's in good enough shape to reply.

Am I right in thinking that Roger Russell lives in Floridia ? If so I believe I paid him a visit back in 2004 with Brian Nolan and had an hour or two viewing his layout and models . I did take pictures but am darned if I know where they are .
Nick
there you go somewhere I also have a picture of a kitbashed industral steam loco by Robert Stephens somewhere pipes and valves everywhere if I remember on a Roco chassis. So on my rummage to find pictures I also came across this Deutz 1/32 n20.the chassis was made by the Model Company of Australia and I made the body and finished it.i don't know if the Model Company is still in business but in there day made first-class products even if they took a long time.

Kim, was that loco in either of the 1:32n2 layout articles you sent me? If not, you built one similar. As great as the layouts were, your bashed critters were every bit as impressive. I loved those articles. -- Russ
Hi Guys
yes, The Model Works Australia is very much still in business and continues to supple a range of 1:35 or 1:32 scale collector models as well as custom building brass models in 48th, 7mm, 1:35 & 1:32 scales.
have fun & stay cool
Bernard S
ah there you are, Bernard, I was beginning to wonder
cheers, Kim.
morning all.
I will continue along with the heading SouthCreek for a while as long as I still am doing 1/35 scale on 9 mm track.so I have been fiddling around with some more stuff this time a turnout using Peco 9 mm set track and building a small flat car the 1on 1 scale would be 2.4 meters long[8 foot] by 1.2 meters wide [4 foot]. the signal arm on the flat car is a standard gauge arm in 1/32 scale.
cheers kim

both car and turnout look appropriately worn. signal flag looks like it's on the way back from the "shops".
hi more likely the signal arm has been stolen and put on eBay.
The same problem with the railroad souvenir collectors all over the world. Beautiful interesting scene Kim.
Everything has your trademark charm. -- Russ
Great work as usual. Did you make the signal arm too?
Hi Ray how are you going?
yes my work I have to confess to having a signal fetish .many many moons ago I made patterns in brass of most of the working parts of a lower quadrant signal in 1-32 scale.i made the parts by hand using a piercing saw and files I suppose it was part of my apprentice and the onset of permanently wearing of glasses. these patterns were later cast in pewter. the first photo is the patterns and then a full assembled signal. the signals had some custom parts like the arms but the weight was worked out so the signal was fully working just like the real thing -mechanically.

Kim, Your patterns and signals look good.
I think your signal indicates: "STOP-cow on the tracks-No Smoking-get a loaf of bread and quart of milk on your way home-watch for falling rocks.
Is that close?
wow. you could start your own business with those pieces of jewelry!
The most important aspect of the signal says "my Mother is coming to dinner, DO NOT be late".
Thanks, Lawton, I knew there was more than I saw there :)
You definitely do good work, Kim.
thanks, everybody
looking at all this now it is so old school as a retail, a prospect they are not just crisp enough. but I made them before 3 d printing so I got a grounding in pewter and lost wax casting it makes more sense to me still today as my software knowledge is very limited.
cheers.
Kim,
I think it's fundamentally important to know the base, because only all of the 3d model making is not everything. Your work is not diminished in any way by the fact that it is not a 3d print.

hi there.

looks like she's going to lay an egg. chicken appears to be having a bit of a struggle, too.
the way I see it is that she is surprised that the chicken has sat beside her and now she is getting the courage to pat it. personally, I think the chicken has a good personality.
I had several ideas about what was happening with her:
She was thinking about getting a tattoo and imagining the pain.
She'd just gotten a tattoo and was still yelling about the pain.
She was warning anyone within earshot not to get a tattoo like she just did. :)
I think she's having an egg laying contest with the chicken.
Kim, your diorama/layout belongs in an art museum. It's very clever, well composed, well executed, loaded with charisma, and most satisfactory.

Hello Kim,
nice that you are healing back despite all the negative weather influences.
Do you have another report from the exhibition for us?
Hi Helmut when i get home i will post more details Cheers Kim
A couple of photos from the Expo NG. Calstock Halton Quay 7mm scale 16.5 mm gauge, and "The Yard" (again 7mm scale 16.5mm gauge). This one had an operating gantry and a r.c. articulated truck. Most of the exhibitors were 009 (a bit to small for me). I was not particularly impressed with the exhibition, Kim's mini diorama beat everything else hands down!
Les Tindall
Yes a bit rough around the edges, most of the displays were small 00 9 efforts.but a very friendly chatty group who all loved there modelling whatever there levels.it just goes to show what rare beasts models over 7 mm or 1/4 inch are.it was great to show what is posssible in large scale small space i think most of the paying punters had never thought of the concept so it was great to make a impression.
I'm glad you made it back ok.

Very nice!
Hi Ray.
thank you very much.
South Creek is a very fun model I can change it as much as I like but it will stay basically the same, a bit of a contradiction but I will try and explain myself. the model is made up in parts and as I go along these bits are becoming smaller like the little market stall .i have done 2 other versions before the stall in this location and are currently working on the 4th version.they just fit in there as pieces maybe I will use them but if i don't it will not destroy the basic foundation of the model .
cheers Kim.
Hello Kim, I could imagine even more at this point an ice cream, hot dog or fish sales.
yes, exactly Helmut sausage on a bread roll.
It's not a diorama. It's a work of art. -- Russ
Hi, all further updates on my new shopping experience at South Creek.
the market stall has been removed and put into storage.in its place is my fountain, bits and pieces bashed, complete with a nice water spout -scratched built. i like this layout with the courtyard it adds another dimension to the overall layout cheers Kim.

If you add an Ice Cream Cart, the young girl with the pained expression can be crying because the vendor is out of her favorite flavor. The little garden in front of the tattoo parlor is a nice touch.
Change the tattoo parlor (yuck!) to a house of ill repute. Then add the fountain and ice cream cart. Fun for the whole family! -- ssuR
yes, the little girl is getting a bit of exposure I am getting some new figures to suit my semi-retired attitude.

So far you have improved everything even though it looked quite good before. The new roof makes a noticeable difference. Maybe tone down the streaks on the banana leaves with pastel chalk? I like that little courtyard. Too bad it's for a tawdry little tattoo parlor. -- Russ
What, no bananas on the tree?
Hi Russ and Lawton.
yes with the banana tree I will go back and update my reference there is one up the road. Airbrush is my favorite method of color correction. I think this is the 5 version of the courtyard and it is getting better with each rebuild but I will leave it and now go back to the industrial area, left the side of the display.
there is an old trick of building a lot of highly detailed scenes in a small area.
with South Creek, there are 4 so far from left to right. industrial, commercial, railway and the little port, all have the potential to be developed in the future.
cheers Kim
This little layout is constantly evolving! Darwin would be pleased. :)
Get some fairy lights and decorate the courtyard for Christmas or Cinco de Mayo or another holiday and give the entire scene a festive look. If Cinco de Mayo then a Mexican hat for the punter.
yes, Lawton, I wanted some carnival lights too.
this time another version of rust this time what I call "fruitcake rust" about 2 actual sizes, when added to the model a lot of detail is lost.
cheers.

I'm doing ok. Just had to take a break from modeling for a while. First because I was feeling burnt out, and second because my office/workshop has become so severely cluttered that I have to stop procrastinating and finally clean it -- a major project.
Hi all.
2 more easy builds of South Creek a tanker and a small power transformer I like both items the tanker is definitely not for drinking water but needs a discharge pipe. both items take 2 short days that is from drawing to finished painting.

Nice looking cart! It looks as though it was made from scrap found in the alley behind the shops. Perfect for a fisherman to move his boxes from the harbor to the market.
You need to lend the cart to Helmut so his yard workers can do their work easier.
Nice additions. I also like the "tree" out of focus behind the tattoo parlor. Kind of looks like, uh, a paintbrush tree .... -- Russ
That is a very rare and endangered example of a paintbrush bush. In the past mature stems were picked from it and used as brushes. Owing to the greed of some painters in the past this one is the last one of its kind.
the paintbrush tree revealed. Lawton, there are 2 hand carts -1 flatbed and the other a tanker. yes, I like all these basic technologies that are made from lost and found materials. really good examples are third world weapons, a bit of tube that has been fashioned into a lethal weapon.
cheers, Kim.

Kim,
you don't fool me. That's no paintbrush tree. It is a coffee bush.
And your modeling is some kind of three-dimensional painting. I like it a lot.
Volker
Love the water cart, and the transformer is great too!
Hi all.
yes, South Creek actually exists and it is very close to where I live not a very inviting place a few creepy crawlers but a good reference point for my model. after being pushed around for a while the power transformer is beginning to fit in.

Hi all.
A small change in scale and direction still 1/35 to 1/32 scale but running on 16.5 gauge track.
for the time being, I will include it with South Creek but in the future when I have built more running stock I will start a separate file.
so I small people carrier work in progress -styrene, wood, and wire I like it a lot but I feel the seats need some work.i will sit on it for a while.

Having worked for a public utility for a period of time early in my working life, I can say that you have nailed the transformer. Only criticism of it is that since it is waiting to be used somewhere, there needs to be a tag on it indicating that utility knows it is in inventory.
I will enjoy watching as the "rickshaw" developes.
Nice weathering. -- Russ
Looks great Kim, but I'm afraid you'll crush it if you sit on it. ;)
thanks all.
24 hours and a bit of work later the little wagon is beginning to take on a bit of personality.
cheers, Kim.

Hi Lawton.
here they call it a stubby holder in reference to Australians love of beer.
personally, I just like coffee.

Hi here we are back again at the Creek as the red heading says it has not been used for over 120 days and yes I really want to continue and reply.
South Creek and I are going back to Europe so I really want to update it. This section middle foreground in a new concrete technique finished with watercolor -cheers.

Satisfactory. Are some dark brown "drip" lines a little too distinct? And maybe some should be lighter, more fuzzy, or a slightly different color? This isn't a criticism since I don't know what you want to represent, just a question. -- Russ
Very nice!
good morning.
The technique is to make a form out of styrene which is stuck onto paper, then a plaster mix is spread between this form. The form is stuck onto a good quality paper and the plaster sticks to the paper. When the plaster drys pick up the paper with the plaster stuck on and twist it the plaster will crack in a random pattern this is what you want then stick it onto your model.[i will do some pictures soon].
The colour yes those lines are too dark also there should be a damp patch at the bottom of the wall, The actual colour of concrete I find hard the commercial products on the market I find to be no good the only way I think is to use watercolours they sink in plaster.
cheers Kim
Hi all.
Here is a series of pictures of my attempts at concrete.
Basically, you have the form and the base of the slab, pour the slab, in this case, patching plaster let dry remove the base from the form and crack.I have adapted this idea from other techniques of concrete, some use mesh in the plaster to keep it together but I have found if you use patching plaster that is already sticky you don't have to.
This version is funny as I put the wet plaster in the microwave and it made it dry really quickly so it is very dynamic most likely I will have to hold it together with white glue. This is ok but stops the watercolour sinking in, if you want to wait for much finer cracks are possible-but I really like it. As always try and avoid hard controlled surfaces especially the edges.
cheers Kim.

Hi All.
South Creeks centre section has been completely pulled apart but progress is being made to pull it back together. What I want is to build an alley between the two buildings at the back to create the illusion of maximum space in a small space. Will I create another display window .a window with curtains or something else in the newly vacant space we will see?
cheers.
The local building authority is going to have to issue a warning as to the safety of the slabs and demand that you fence them off to keep members of the public from injuring themselves.
Hi Lawton,
There are a few traps in there the biggest would be the fire hazard but hey we are all big biffy blokes aren't we.?
The biggest challenge apart from starting again will be the background space at the back of the alleyway. There is a gap of 73 mm or about 3 inches I could build another high fence but what I am thinking is to continue the sky down and have a low structure but this will mean having a join line in the horizon what will I use to cover this line?
anyway all the best Kim
Hi Kim. How about forcing the perspective on the new building. That would give you depth. I think you are having too much fun.
Bill
yep forced perspectives mirrors but I have gone with extending the sky to do this I had to do a new sky no worries. Now I have a join in the sky, funny but I will have to disguise with maybe a sign or a water pipe we will see.
cheers.

He should fine the sky for property encroachment. -- ssuR
Hi and good morning.
What was the name of the movie The Truman Show where his world was a completely artificial well my sky now reminds me of that? The sky is too blue a wash of white should sort it out no worries.
The more I thought about the Truman Show the more I was convinced both the blue sky and the position of the cloud was wrong so today I changed them. Now the cloud has a lot more depth of field and fits well between the buildings. One final thing the black in the clouds needs to go. Really the only thing that I liked about the Truman Show was the painted sky at the finish.
Cheers

I found the Truman Show disappointing but I like your diorama a lot. -- Russ
good evening all.
The solution to the join in the back scene a line of washing of course. While I am at it I have changed the colour of the roofs at the back and re-clad the building at the right, at the moment I am trying to decide how much weathering I should apply to the new work.
cheers Kim
(https://images14.fotki.com/v390/photos/3/1816483/14515115/DSC_4011-vi.jpg).
Kim,
the line of washing is a very good idea. Maybe a somewhat yellow/red light behind the fence as a suggestion of distant sunlight might solve the problem with the shadows on the sky. Did you ever think of using the effects of background bruising (o Lord, please let google have translated that correctly)? With the new somewhat whiteish roofs the buildings look much less 'put in front of a background' than they did before. Maybe the roofs might benefit from getting paler/blueish the closer they are to the background.
The finish and coloring of the concrete looks very good. Maybe you may add some unifying tone to lower areas of the buildings, which to me at the moment are lacking a bit of entrenching to the ground.
Cheers,
Volker
Hi there Volker.
cheers
Background bruising maybe you mean background brushing-close.
The background is less of a problem at the moment when iI photographed it the two wooden clad walls are very similar large expanses of blank walls. With my last version, everything was weathered quite heavily now I want to change that approach. The blue ting of on the roof is a great idea what I am after is galvanised roof sheets a very common building material here in Australia.
cheers Kim
I mean things/landscapes appearing more and more blueish and brighter the farer they are away.
Goodevening.
Yes, I added a bit of blue to the roof big improvement basically a tone of the sky just enough to make it look like a different. These large plains of walls with little weathering are a great background to detail objects you know they don't compete with each other so the foreground is not overpowered by the background. I have planned at least 3 details for these areas.
With my attached photos 2 of the roof there is one of the colour pallet used in the movie industry personally I love this attention to detail.
cheers Kim

hah.
I really really try hard but there is always something else?
Hello Kim, how about a simple gradient from above a little darker and a little brighter at the bottom.
morning all.
First I would like to say hello to all the new members of late-great modelling as far as I am concerned more the merrier there are some amazing creations out there.
The 7 days update down at the creek a nice little half round crane has been added to start the process of knocking off the hard edges-styrene and some found objects.

Yeah , 40 years ago !
Kim, much better only I miss the barber roll.
Yes straight from the fashion hub Dee Why -Sydney where everything from the 80 is still new.
I wanted to make individual wigs but in 1/35 no way maybe using 1/22 scale skulls but even then hard. What I want to do is to put a little hanging light complete with shade in the barbershop with some sort of outline milling around we will see. Helmut is right there have been a few versions but they were going nowhere this is better. What about the red wooden siding-weatherboard nice red all watercolor over individual boards that have been messed around with.

I saw your diorama/layout on your tube yesterday, the colors and textures looked fabulous. It really came alive, I wish the photographer shot more footage. Great job thanks for sharing

Hey, Gil, where have you been? -- Russ
Chears Gil, how are you?
Moving along this little building is nearly finished size -75 mm wide, 65 mm deep and 150 mm heigh [divide by 25 to get imperial dimensions]. Materials wood,plastic.plaster.paper, and metal it comes apart into 5 pieces- the shell, roof the barber sign, the chimney and the blue sign. Paint mainly washes and some enamels no airbrushing.

Hello Kim,
Like many older model builders, I'm doing well with many older model builders, unfortunately I can't show my own projects as creatively as you do at the moment.
At the last exhibition, my "Klosterstollen" model unfortunately suffered major damage due to interventions by visitors. In the meantime, everything has been restored and partly technically improved.
Another work for a good friend is about to be completed.
In addition, we have made good progress at the permanent construction site of the snow slingshots (http://www.finescalerr.com/smf/index.php?topic=2826.0), I could report on this again.
Cool. What is the red thing on the balcony? Some kind of tank?
Hey Kim
it is really great to see that you are now back at your old form.
Love the character that you have reintroduced. keep going with the theme since once again this is prize-winning stuff

Hi all.
Another change on the coast, the little industrial building in the foreground is being turned into a blacksmith shop -work in progress.
Next March Ontrax in Utrecht - the Netherlands is on if you don't know Ontrax is becoming the best model railway exhibition in the world bar none. It is held in the display area of the National Railway Museum of the Netherlands the locomotive hall is dimmed and the displays are arranged around the giant locomotives. One of the conditions of selection is that the models have very good display lights so the scene is impressive. The museum is very good in there attitude concentrating on what they do best letting a group of Dutch modelers do the selecting, resulting in a very good mix of both standard and narrow gauge on freelance and proto subjects. I will be attending with South Creek remember it is designed for travel from Australia but the other modelers come from Europe and the UK but the organizers see it as a worldwide exhibition.

Wouldn't it be much easier to have the convention at the house next door? -- Russ
Hello Kim, when is the good journey and with a bit of luck we will see you in March at The Ontraxs in Utrecht.
I'm always amazed by how well you get at the way you manage to fit everything into the smallest possible space.
Morning all.
Russ not with my neighbors, I like to travel too much so to be able to take a complex model with me complete is a real bonus.I have done it so many times that I am beginning to get a very good idea of what is involved. Different materials etc and most importantly the weight the maximum of carrying on luggage 7 kg my model 4.3 kg.
The finished item is very important to me just as important as detail or paint finish still into the idea of large scale small space I don't know if any of yourselves have seen a book -"The Art of Japenese Packing" if so you would know what I mean.and yes I was very good with blocks in kindergarten.
Cheers
Here is another.
All this stuff is very fragile so it has a special place later I will show you very much like a science size of box-60 cm long22 cm wide and 6 cm deep-24,9 and 2.5 inches. Multilayers

Good morning all.
This little loco dumper caught my eye perfect for South Creek.
This is my reference so it really is a blank canvas, my ideas so far 2100 mm long by 1050 mm wide[7 foot by 3.6 feet]. Looking around I already have a lot of the pieces and the skiff is a perfect place for the motor.
As a side thought please spare a thought for the fires in Australia to get it in perspective so far an area the size of France has burnt .half a billion native animals have died many human lives mass evacuations and no rain on the horizon, repeated firestorms
.Dodon't brush it off as the Northern Hemispheres summer is approaching.
cheers, Kim.
Your model probably will have more charm than the full size dumper.
As (all of) you know, a little over a year ago I had to grab the cats and evacuate for four days. Enormous waves of fire came within half a mile of our house and I didn't know whether it would survive. We live near a large open space with many deer, mountain lions, coyotes, bobcats, raccoons, rabbits, birds, ... everything. I hate to think about how many were unable to escape or others whose already difficult survival became much harder.
Most fires in California have been the result of arson, carelessness, or sparking power lines. In other words, PEOPLE CAUSED NEARLY ALL THE FIRES. I hope that has not been the case in Australia. And I hope, somehow, fire fighters are able to put a quick end to the current holocaust.
Russ
Hi Russ.
usually, there is the fair share of lunatics out there but the big influence is it has been so dry and very hot yesterday 30 k inland from where I live was 47.5 degrees C that is 117 degrees F ouch hot. You wake up every morning observe how much smoke is about this gives a good indication of what the fires are doing The Australian bush will come back it needs fire to reproduce animals also will come back but the big worry is the lack of water once the politicians stop point-scoring there needs to be a massive investment in water . Most likely all this will end with a massive typhoon hitting a city of 5.5 million great. If you had a warped sense of humor like myself you could see the similarities of an SF story the doomsayers as the temple of climate change and the wicked media baron representing the climate deniers, myself I feel the world is changing fast perhaps a religious theme could be woven into it also
Anyway, the dumpster on wheels a very easy to build it will take a few versions but you are right the devil is in the character.
Cheers Kim
That dumper looks like a great subject to model -- lots of character.
Pretty thing, Kim. I think I have to build one for my layout too.
Bernhard
hi all .Bernard that is great that you are thinking also to build one with your skills it will be impressive.
Mine will be a bit different for one thing it will be using a gauge of 9 mm you use 16,5 mm yes. Also, the motor in the photo it is a 2 or 4 stroke with a fuel container on the top I can't make this so I am going to introduce another motor assembly made up with bits and pieces that are leftover. I wanted a company like mini art to produce a plastic version in 1/35 of a small engine very handy then you could make all those crazy pallet movers from 1950 ish I am looking forward to your version.
My detail will be about the load 4 versions spring to mind each could be removable and attached to a dummy base that covers the motor in the skiff. Helmut has made the observation that the skiff could be either tipped to the front or twisted to the side crazy detail luckily mine will be completely fixed.
cheers
Hello Kim,
here is a version with a VW industrial engine with 24 hp.
What a great way to take all of the needs for a day at the beach over the dunes to the shore.
Kim, I found this a long time ago. But I like your version better. I still have unfinished lorry kits from Hesketh Scale Models that I can modify accordingly. For the motorization I could maybe use the engine from a motorcycle model kit (like for my motorcycle-powered critter).
Thanks for posting other examples, Helmut and Bernhard. -- Russ
Here is another one ...
I am not sure how I have started using 9 mm gauge mechanisms but with these small large scale models, they do the job very well. Here are 3 commercially avalable mechanisms that you can use .
Starting at the top.
Tomy Tec made in Japan very good value for money but bulky
The new Kato 11-109 promising better performance good value but the wheelbase is too long for my tight radiuses.
Mini Trains made in Germany my choice can run all day at a crawl very good on tight corners but expensive.
If you have any more to add please feel to add.
cheers.

Good afternoon.
Progress the little skiff in wheels is taking shape.
Believe me that I tried all sorts of model motors and the only one that works are industrial battery , it seems appropriate for such a loco. The load is a separate model as is the driver. It is going to be fun to detail and paint the skiff on wheels.
cheers.

Looks all right. It's a good idea to hide the motor in the skiff.
Hi Bernard how are you?
There you go about 7 days the painting will cover the loose cutting and most likely the next one will be even better.
Love the search light on the sick you can change direction easily and when you arrive at the work site use it as a work light all working off the batteries.
cheers.
Hi Kim, that looks very good, but I'm curious how you will solve this with the drive for good.
Goodmorning Helmut.
I think you are talking about the battery it is a model only the actual power unit is in the front I am using the excellent mini trans chassis and motor.
cheers.

Nice paint job, Kim!
That turned out well and should look very good on your diorama. -- Russ
Excellent work, very nice!
Thanks, everybody.
Bernard, I consider my painting just adequate what I look for is a unified finish that is all the trouble with using a DSLR camera is that it makes you very aware of any imperfections even though they are not really evident. Model painting has become very specialized and the best are a hard act to follow. What I like is design and the rest is a making do.
cheers
Hi all.
Track for my ultralight railway 1/35 on 9 mm track I thought I would never go here but here I am and I can see a few good applications coming up. Scratch built track eventually a little bridge travelling over a dried-up creek Australian style.
cheers.

Yeah, Kim, I know the problem with the camera too. But I always try to make things so that they fit the naked eye.
