That is because eBay automatically boosts the bid by one minimum step over the highest previous bid regardless of how high the next bid is.

I use
 
eSnipe

for bids on EBay.

I first decide the absolute maximum I am willing to pay and put in the eSnipe bid at that price.

I usually get the item for less.

Esnipe automatically puts my bid in 6 seconds before the auction ends.

Saved a huge amount of money using it.

Wild West Models has some great tools.

Reworked and improved versions of older tools.

Crow River has some very affordable tools.
